The World Ahead Weekly Update 11/25

Greetings from Charlotte –

This is a short week for those of us in the United States since the annual holiday of Thanksgiving occurs on Thursday. We all certainly have much to be thankful for—especially the incredible privilege of being called at this time to understand God’s precious Truth. While Americans are focused on Thanksgiving celebrations, very significant developments continue to emerge in Europe, where German efforts and ideas seem destined to rearrange the political nature of the continent. Mr. Meredith taped another television program this week and is busy writing as we put together the January-February 2012 edition of the Tomorrow’s World magazine. Last weekend, Mr. Ames’ television program “Revelation: The Mystery Unveiled” is expected to generate more than 5,400 responses. Mr. Pyle reports that more than 53% of the responses (more than 2,900 calls) came from “first-time” callers. This was the highest percentage of first-time responses to a program this year! Mr. and Mrs. Ames will be in Tucson and Phoenix, Arizona, where he will speak this coming Sabbath.—DSW

Healing

We received encouraging news this week from Santiago, Chile, about the healing of a prospective member’s six-month-old baby who became seriously ill last week with a rare lymph node disease called Kawasaki, which can be fatal. His mother reports that little Mateo’s health deteriorated rapidly, having severe difficulty in breathing due to inflammation of air passageways. After applying an anointed cloth on her son, the baby immediately improved and is now healthy and smiling again. Her mother thanks God for His mercy and intervention, and the brethren for their intercessory prayers.

Midwest Post Feast Gatherings

On November 12, 61 brethren from Nebraska, Iowa, and Kansas gathered in Omaha for a post-Feast get-together ably organized this year by Mrs. JoAnn Tieken. At noon, the monthly Bible Study covered statutes in the book of Deuteronomy. Jason Carper’s sermonette, “The Names God Gives,” was followed by “An Overcoming Strategy” by Brian Pomicter. God’s Great Harvest theme from the Feast was continued with the beautifully decorated and overflowing buffet table. While everyone was partaking of the blessings still enjoyed in this part of the world, background music was provided from the Branson Feast website. Afterward, photo albums and souvenirs were passed around, and all were treated to a travelogue from Guyana where three had spent the Feast with the 50 brethren there.

On November 19, in Des Moines, Iowa, a similar gathering took place with 43 brethren enjoying a Mexican style covered-dish meal organized by Paul and Cathy Schut. Earlier, a sermonette involving a Bible Quiz, “Sanctify God in Your Heart,” was given by deacon Rick Wilson with the sermon, “Waiting and Watching,” following by Brian Pomicter. The Schuts had gathered and organized by Feast site each family’s photos into digital slide presentations so that the showing of each was accompanied by commentary from a family member.

Classes will begin January 11, 2012, and students may register anytime between now and then. For those who have never taken a Living University course, you will need to enroll in the University first, and then register for your selected course. The following are brief descriptions of several courses being offered next semester. A complete listing of “Spring Semester” courses (Spring in the northern hemisphere), can also be viewed on the Living University website under the link “2011 Spring Schedule.” To make application to Living University, to register for courses, and to find out more, please visit the www.livinguniv.com website. ENGL 112 – Argument-Based Literary Research. This course, the second in a series of two, introduces research techniques, documentation styles, and argumentative strategies used in professional and academic writing. Emphasis is placed on analyzing data and incorporating research findings into documented argumentative essays and research projects. This course is important because it prepares students for the writing challenges of upper-level theology courses.

SPCM 150 – Introduction to Communication. This course provides a foundation for speaking, including critical listening and methods of writing, organizing, delivering and critiquing speeches. It will deal with problems of effective oral communication through study and experience in analysis, synthesis and presentation of subject matter in oral communication. Upon completion, students should be able to make clear and convincing oral presentations to individuals, churches, and other groups, clarify information as needed, and facilitate an open exchange of ideas.

THL 212 – Old Testament Survey II. This course is the second in a sequence of two and deals with the Latter Prophets and the Writings, focusing on the background, content, structure, geography, teachings, and basic meaning of each book and outstanding people and events. Emphasis will be placed on the Old Testament as the background and foundation for understanding the New Testament. This course will essentially begin at the book of Song of Solomon and move through the remaining books of the Old Testament.

What Are You Thankful For? Today, we live in a world where many people are obsessed with “getting our rights”—getting what they feel they are entitled to or what someone else owes them! Yet, the Scriptures emphasize the importance of being thankful for what God provides (Psalm 95:2; 100:4). The Apostle Paul encourages Christians to develop the attitude of “giving thanks always for all things to God” (Ephesians 5:20), for the gift of salvation (2 Corinthians 9:15), for our role in God’s Work (1 Timothy 1:12), and for those whom God calls to His truth (Romans 1:8). Paul mentions that prayerful requests should be made with thanksgiving (Philippians 4:6). James states that we should even be grateful for trials that help us grow (James 1:2-4). However, Paul warns that unthankfulness—especially for the opportunity to know the true God and His Truth—is a trait of unrighteous (Romans 1:18-21). When was the last time you took time to sit down and make a list of what you have to be thankful for—and then expressed thanks directly to your Creator? This Sabbath would be a good time to make that list!

News and Prophecy—November 23, 2011

Temperatures in Europe Climb as Winter Sets In. As the European financial crisis continues, rhetoric becomes more pointed and possibilities become more interesting. A German news source, Der Spiegel, recently proclaimed, “The old EU is Finished.” The author went on to summarize an interview with Joschka Fischer, former German foreign minister. Mr. Fischer “wants to see a resolute political body consisting of the leaders of euro-zone countries. They should, he believes, be outfitted with far-reaching authority and granted sufficient power by their parliaments back home.” The article then described “old Europe” as “the Babylonian monster that spits out tons of paper in 23 languages every day”—referring to its antiquated and cumbersome way of doing business. Next, the article author cited Charles Grant, founder of the Centre for European Reform. Mr. Grant has a “vision for a democratically united Europe in which the citizens of the various member states [currently 27] vote directly for European commissioners… Grant’s model sees the EU president selecting the 10 best of the 27 citizens’ picks, with the remaining 17 becoming deputies” (November 14, 2011). Meanwhile in Canada, former German defense minister Karl zu Guttenburg pointed out that the EU’s problems are not related to the euro or finance, but rather are a crisis of leadership (TheLocal.de, November 20, 2011). The Times of London ran a scathing article this week entitled “Germany has declared war on the Eurozone.” The article’s author discussed how the Bundesbank is inhibiting the economic recovery of Europe by creating a situation where Europe must follow German finance rules or face financial chaos (November 23, 2011). The political and financial landscape in Europe is changing, almost daily. A comm on theme being suggested is that a smaller, more economically powerful, and governmentally integrated Europe will emerge “from the ashes” of the current EU configuration. Many expect that Germany will hold the reigns of this new, sleeker and more powerful “European dream.” These dynamic events in Europe are developing right along the lines of ancient Bible prophecies. Thousands of years ago the prophet Daniel prophesied that ten kings (toes of the image in Nebuchadnezzar’s dream) would come together at the time of the end and form the King of the North (Daniel 2:41-42; 11:36-39). The Apostle John spoke about this same group of ten kings—possibly representing ten nations—headed by a strong individual known as the Beast (Revelation 17:7-13). In the days ahead, we will need to watch to see how these ancient prophecies will actually be fulfilled!

Growing Threat of Super Bugs. For years, scientists have warned about the growing strength and drug resistance of bacteria. In Europe, nations are reporting drug resistance of up to 50% with some bacterial infections. This means that antibiotics used to treat certain bacterial infections are failing half of the time. Public health experts are fearful because of the lack of new and more powerful antibiotics. It is not economically feasible for drug companies to research and develop “last line of defense” drugs that will not be commonly used. Experts cite overprescribing and misuse as major reasons that antibiotics are failing (Reuters, November 17, 2011). Jesus warned that disease epidemics—“pestilences”—would be one sign of the end of the age (Luke 21:11), and that they would be part of the “beginning of sorrows” (Matthew 24:8). As time goes on, we should expect to see more vir ulent and difficult-to-treat outbreaks of disease. No doubt the drug resistance being “built up” by the agents of infectious disease will play into God’s end-time scenario.—Scott Winnail, John Meakin, Justin Ridgeway and James Ginn

The World Ahead Weekly Update 11/19

Greetings from Charlotte –

While America focuses on pre-election dramas, events of prophetic significance continue to develop in the bubbling crucible of Europe. This week in Charlotte, Mr. Meredith directed very profitable Council of Elders meetings from Monday to Wednesday. It was encouraging to hear the positive reports from various parts of the world where the Work is being done. We held a Living University Board Meeting on Thursday. Mr. Pyle reports that Mr. Meredith’s most recent television program entitled, “How To Know When Christ Will Return!,” is expected to draw more than 5,300 responses and that last weekend’s responses overwhelmed our call center. The Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations last weekend in Baltimore, Washington, Indianapolis, Akron, Abilene and Midland drew more than 80 visitors. This coming weekend Dr. Wil Pierre will be in Haiti for services and to conduct a TWSP. Thank you for your prayers for God’s guidance and blessing for all these events.—DSW

Australasian Update

Mr. Bruce Tyler reports: “On the way [to the Council of Elders], I took the opportunity to visit with Mr. and Mrs. Penman and discuss various matters concerning the future of God’s Work in the Pacific sector of the region. Mr. Penman is still in contact with a number of those who attended Dr. Winnail’s Tomorrow’s World presentations…. The new television station [in Australia], TV4, which is carrying the Tomorrow’s World program, appears to be very promising. So far, the responses are steadily climbing each week and that’s very pleasing to see. In this Laodicean age, we know the vast majority of humanity will scoff at God’s Work and Word, but we are in good company. They did the same in Noah’s day. But God and His Word will not be mocked (Galatians 6:7). Our peoples are bent on sowing a spiritual whirlwind which is about to end in the greatest national catastrophe ever seen…”

Charlotte Family Weekend—Marriage Seminar

Come to the informative Marriage Seminar to be conducted on Friday, December 23, at the Hilton Charlotte University Place, at the beginning of the Charlotte Family Weekend. This event is open to everyone, and there is no charge. Registration, however, is necessary, so we can plan for seating (please use the same form as the dinner-dance). The seminar will run from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with a break for lunch. Lunch will not be provided, but participants can avail themselves of the hotel restaurant or other establishments nearby. Don’t miss it!

Personal Hymnals

The Mail Processing Department is now beginning to distribute personal hymnals, based on the orders we received this past summer. We will not be mailing the hymnals to each person individually. Instead, we will group the hymnals of one congregation together, and ship them together, either to the pastor or the person he designates to receive them. Each order will be separately wrapped and labeled to avoid confusion.

Registration for Second Semester

Registration for second semester classes is now underway. Classes will begin January 11 and students may register anytime between now and January 11. For those who have never taken a Living University course, you will need to enroll in the University first, and then register for your selected course. The following are brief descriptions of several courses being offered next semester. THL 110b – Bible Study Course (prerequisite: THL 110a). This version of the Bible Study Course (BSC) is online and includes lectures on related topics and additional readings. It will be more “in depth” than the paper-pencil or online version of the Bible Study Course, but it will use the original course as its backbone. The course has no tuition fee for those who enroll. This two-semester course serves as an introduction to the Bible, its message, and its implication for successful Christian life in today’s world. This course is not available for audit.

THL 135 – Life, Ministry and Teachings of Jesus. This course is one of LU’s foundational courses in theology, and covers the life, ministry, and teachings of Jesus Christ as presented in the four gospels, and takes a “harmony of the gospels” approach to the subject. It covers the gospels in far more detail than is possible in our traditional Sabbath services. The gospels are analyzed from the context of the social, political, and religious conditions of the first century. Students will spend time reviewing the background, purpose, message, and themes of the gospels and the significance of Jesus Christ in the first century and beyond. The lecture core of this course is a series of recorded lectures presented by Dr. Roderick Meredith.

THL 136 – Acts and the Writings of Paul. This class focuses on the book of Acts and deals with Paul’s life, times, and writings. It includes the background, purpose, message and themes of Paul’s letters; his personal life and character; his companions; and the chronology of the apostle’s life. Emphasis is placed on the spiritual importance of Paul’s writings and the issues that Paul dealt with in the early New Testament Church. This exciting course is also needed to take the Epistles of Paul courses.

Comments

Study the Word: The prophet Isaiah records that God is looking for individuals who “tremble at My word” (Isaiah 66:2). Jesus taught that we are to live “by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4). Jesus also warned of men who would set aside the commandments of God and teach “as doctrines the commandments [traditions] of men” (Mark 7:5-13). This is why the Apostle Paul stressed that we must diligently study the Scriptures so we can rightly divide (understand, explain) the word of truth and avoid being confused by false teachers (2 Timothy 2:15). In a world where many people have different ideas about what to believe, we need to know what the Bible really says to avoid being misled and deceived. Jesus plainly said, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make y ou free” (John 8:31-32).

News and Prophecy—November 17, 2011

Europe’s Dynamic Landscape. The crisis in Europe has generated a myriad of opinions about its ultimate outcome. Some suggest a long and protracted period of crisis management. Others see a sleeker version of a two-speed Europe (The Economist, November 10, 2011). Some think Germany should leave the EU and take its friends with it (The Telegraph, November 16, 2011). Some are calling for a New Europe (Reuters, November 9, 2011). Still others hold to the idea that the EU can be saved only by making the “tough” decisions. In a recent article, geopolitical analyst George Friedman suggests that one way Europe may move beyond the current debt crisis is through the emergence of “… new political forces… that will completely reshape the European political landscape” (Stratfor, November 15, 2011). One idea that is common to many assessments is that the final solu tion will result in some type of “downsizing” of nations (fewer than the current 17 eurozone members), and that Germany will be at the helm. Bible prophecy has long foretold such a development. The Apostle John predicted the rise of a European Beast power eventually consisting of ten kingdoms that willingly give their power to a central government led by a strong individual (Revelation 17:12-16). This Beast will be influenced by a universal “mother church” (verses 1-5) that will direct nations to worship this Beast (Revelation 13:11-15). What is now occurring in Europe will ultimately lead to radical changes in Europe’s political landscape, just as the Bible predicts. For more information on this topic, review our booklet, The Beast of Revelation.

Catholics Come Home. For some time, Catholics Come Home advertisements have aired in select media markets around the U.S. An ad campaign in Phoenix, Arizona in 2008 resulted in more than 3,000 people returning to the Catholic church, according to a spokesperson from the Diocese of Phoenix. Now, the church is poised to blanket the U.S. with 400 ads in more than 10,000 cities across the country, between December 16 and January 8. The hope is that the $3 million campaign will motivate about a million Catholics to return to the church. According to a spokesperson, “People are looking for hope.” Some of those who have returned said they did, “because we were invited” (National Catholic Register, November 9, 2011). As time goes on, prophecy reveals that the Roman church will gain both popularity and power (Revelation 17:1-6, 18), in part from people who are “looking for hope” and waiti ng to be asked. Although this “church of men” will not be able to fulfill the hope of billions, there is One who will—the coming Messiah—Jesus Christ. His return as King of kings and Lord of lords will reshape the world, bring freedom to the captives, and give hope to the hopeless. And His return is eminent! For more details about indicators of Christ’s return, see our booklet, Fourteen Signs Announcing Christ’s Return.

Is War Next for Syria? The once close relationship between Syria and Turkey has rapidly deteriorated due to Syria’s continued violence toward its own protesting citizens. This week, “Turkey… suspended its joint oil exploration projects with Damascus and threatened to cut off electricity supplies to its neighbor in response to the continued violent suppression of Syria’s popular uprising” (Deutche Welle, November 16, 2011). The Arab Spring has slipped out of view of some media sources, but civil unrest and violent government crackdowns are still ripe in Syria. While some have suggested that Syria could be expelled by the Arab League, other experts suggest that if tensions continue to increase, Turkey could take military action against Syria. Currently, Turkey is sending troops to its southern border with Syria to create a buffer zone between the two nations—an area where Syr ian refugees might come for safety. Syrian unrest is a powerful reminder that all is not well in the Middle East, and that things will likely get worse before they get any better. God predicted a time when Syrian leaders in Damascus will grow feeble and afraid, people will die in the streets of the city, and it will be consumed by fire (Jeremiah 49:23-27). He also said that Damascus would cease from being a city and become a “ruinous heap” (Isaiah 17:1)—a prophecy that has not yet come to pass. Events in Syria will be worth watching as Damascus and Syria will figure prominently in the fulfillment of God’s prophecies.—Scott Winnail, John Meakin, James Ginn, Deborah Lincoln-Strange

The World Ahead Weekly Update 11/12

Greetings from Charlotte –

Severe weather continues to batter parts of the globe—an “epic” storm is pounding coastal Alaska and flood damage continues in Thailand and Northern India. In Europe, the financial crisis threatens to alter the make-up of the eurozone and “unravel” what has been built up over the last six decades—significant changes appear to be in the wind! Mr. Meredith is back in Charlotte after making Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations in Baltimore and Washington. It is encouraging to note that a total of 189 visitors attended the six TWSPs conducted last weekend. Six more follow-up presentations will take place this coming weekend. Mr. Pyle reports that we should receive more than 4,400 responses to Mr. King’s telecast last weekend entitled, “The Apostles Amazing Journeys.” Next week we will be holding a Council of Elders conference here in Charlotte. Your prayers for the meetings are appreciated.

Please Note: In light of numerous individuals who are facing serious health problems, Dr. Meredith would like to announce that we plan to have a Church-wide fast next month on the Sabbath of December 17 to beseech God to intervene and heal His people who are suffering. Your continued prayers for God’s people and God’s Work will be deeply appreciated.—DSW

Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations

Baltimore and Washington: Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations were held just south of Baltimore, Maryland and in Washington, District of Columbia, on Saturday afternoon, November 5, and on Sunday afternoon, November 6, respectively. One hundred and nine people (49 members and 60 guests) attended the Special Presentation in the Baltimore area; and 67 people (52 members and 15 guests) attended the campaign in Washington. Both congregations would like to express thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Meredith for taking the time to come for these lectures. Mr. Meredith powerfully presented the topic “What’s Ahead for America?” in both cities—here at the Nation’s Capital!

Ministerial Transfers

Mr. and Mrs. Wyatt Ciesielka will be moving to Charlotte. Mr. Ciesielka will serve as Internet Operations Manager and will teach classes at Living University. Mr. John Strain will move from Texas to Florida to become the Pastor of the South Florida congregations. These moves will take place in January 2012.

Death Announcement: Bob Yetka

We are saddened to announce the death of Bob Yetka, a deacon who faithfully served the La Crescenta, California congregation. Bob died unexpectedly on November 1 as a result of heart failure. He is survived by his wife Joyce and three adult daughters. Cards of condolence can be sent to the following address: Joyce Yetka, 2934 Freeborn St, Duarte, CA 91010.—Darrell Lovelady

Earthquakes in Oklahoma

We are shaking and twisting in Oklahoma. After a series of quakes and out-of-season tornados that have set records in the state of Oklahoma, we hope and pray that the activity will settle down. I am not aware of any damage or injury to any of our brethren. The earthquakes have been a new experience for my wife and me, as these were the first we have felt in our lives. The feeling of inadequacy and powerlessness to stop the quake is incredible. Christ warned in Matthew 24 that at the end time we would witness earthquakes in various places where they are not expected. While Oklahoma has had quakes before, they are very rare and the one on Saturday night, November 5, (5.7 magnitude) set a record as the strongest ever recorded in the state. Prophecy continues to be fulfilled daily.—Gene Hilgenberg

United Kingdom Update: Accident in Somerset (Taunton)

On Friday night, November 5, there was a massive traffic accident on the M5 highway in Somerset, England. Thirty-four vehicles were involved in the pile-up that resulted in seven people losing their lives, and 54 being injured. Mr. Rod King reports that none of our brethren from the Taunton, Somerset, congregation were involved in the accident.

Prayer Request: Gloria Shumway

Seven years ago, my wife was diagnosed with a brain tumor (acoustic neuroma), which was surgically removed. Because it had grown around a vital nerve, the surgeon wasn’t able to remove the tumor completely and informed us that it would grow back. This has been the case and the latest MRI shows that the tumor is beginning to push against the brain stem which controls all bodily functions. While she feels well and hasn’t experienced the symptoms she had before her surgery, the surgeon said that the tumor is at a critical point and recommended having it removed. This would require two separate surgical procedures. She was anointed and we look forward to seeing how our Great God intervenes. Your prayers are deeply appreciated!—Paul Shumway

Note of Appreciation

I would like to thank all the congregations of the Living Church of God for the beautiful condolence cards that we have received. It has been very moving to receive so much outpouring of affection, support and, above all, love from the brethren expressed in their cards. I never thought it would happen, but God allowed us to go through this trial so we can learn lessons that He wants us to learn. I’m very thankful for the husband He gave me for 43 years of marriage, and only death did us part. Thank God for the hope of the resurrection and I hope it will be fewer than 43 years to see my husband, Sergio, again. My children, daughters-in-law, grandchildren and I thank you very much!—Maria Carvajal

Savoring the Big Picture: God’s people have just observed another cycle of Holy Days—seven annual festivals that picture God’s Plan of Salvation for mankind. The Scriptures reveal that this plan is a mystery to most people today (1 Corinthians 1:26-27; 2:7-8). How much to you value the unique opportunity you have been given to understand the real purpose of life and to see how God is working out His Great Plan on earth? Are you excited about the privilege you have been given to be called now to prepare to rule with Jesus Christ when He returns to establish the Kingdom of God on earth—as pictured by the Feast of Tabernacles? Do you rejoice in the knowledge that all people who have ever lived will have an opportunity to understand these same glorious truths—as pictured by the Last Great Day? I hope we can truly savor the pri vilege of understanding the “Big Picture” that we are reminded of every year as we observe God’s Holy Days. Let’s use the coming year to grow and bear fruit that God can use as He prepares His “firstfruits” for His Kingdom.

News and Prophecy—November 10, 2011

More Earthquakes. Saturday, Oklahoma was hit by its largest earthquake on record in the state—a quake of 5.6 magnitude. While the quake did little damage, it scared many people who are used to tornados, but not earthquakes. The quake was felt as far away as Washington, DC and South Carolina—1,000 miles away (Reuters, November 6, 2011). Oklahoma has about 50 small quakes a year. However, last year (2010) the state experienced 1,047 quakes! This sudden surge in earthquakes has puzzled scientists. Some suspect that hydraulic fracturing of rocks to release natural gas may be contributing to the quakes (Associated Press, November 7, 2011). The record Oklahoma quake comes after a 7.2 magnitude quake hit Eastern Turkey on October 23, killing more than 500, and a 7.4 magnitude quake hit deep under ground in the Kermadec Islands region in the South Pacific, on October 21 (www.usgs.gov). These recent quakes are noteworthy both because of their magnitude and their location. Jesus predicted, almost 2,000 years ago, that “earthquakes in diverse places” would be just one of the signs that would precede His Second Coming and the end of the age (Matthew 24:7). As time goes on, expect to see more earthquakes, with more devastating power, occurring in more diverse places.

Fear for the Australian Dollar. Currently, the Australian dollar is relatively strong on the world currency markets. However, Australia’s increasing reliance on exports to China concerns some experts. In recent years, Chinese companies have been hoarding metals—especially copper—to use as collateral. With the slumping value of copper, Australian exports to China are predicted to drop drastically, which will negatively affect the Australian dollar (Money and Markets, October 22, 2011). Economists seldom connect their concerns with areas outside their field. Yet religious interest in Australia is not strong and Australia boasts some of the largest “Gay Pride” celebrations in the world. The Bible clearly reveals there will be negative consequences to Israelite-descended nations because of their increasing rejection of God and His ways. Moses predicted that the Israelite nations will become the tail, while outside nations will become head over them (Deuteronomy 28:43-45). If copper prices tumble, due to the trade relationship between Australia and China, we might expect the Australian dollar to tumble down with it. Moses warned about trusting foreign nations instead of God (Deuteronomy 28:49-50).

Thailand’s Epic Flooding Continues. Three months of flooding across the nation has left more than 500 dead and one quarter of Thailand’s 76 provinces still feeling the effects of flood waters. For three weeks, much of the nation’s capital, Bangkok, has been submerged under waist-deep water. The sad part is that the water has nowhere to go and is predicted to remain for several more weeks. Analysts estimate that 1,000 factories are closed due to flooding and at least one major airport is under neck-deep water. According to one reporter, “By many measures, Thailand is working at half speed.” The president’s offices have been moved twice due to rising waters. Food and water are becoming scarce in some areas and mosquitos are swarming (New York Times, November 8, 2011). Across the Pacific Ocean this week, the “Bering Sea Superstorm” smacked into Alaska br inging hurricane-force winds of 90 miles per hour, more than a foot of snow in some places, and tidal surges 10 feet (two meters) high (WashingtonPost.com, November 9, 2011). Worldwide weather is getting more extreme. Jesus warned that “pestilences” and “fearful sights” will come more frequently as the end of age approaches (Luke 21:11). The World Ahead Weekly Update 11/5

Greetings from Charlotte –

While fall colors spread over North Carolina, a freak snowstorm blanketed the Northeast USA, floods ravaged Thailand and northern Italy, earthquakes rocked Turkey and Peru and the ongoing financial crisis in Europe is bringing about significant events that will impact the future of that continent and the world. It seems like we are watching prophecies come alive on an almost daily basis! Here in Charlotte, we are “back in the saddle again.” Mr. Meredith held several meetings this week, finished a semi-annual letter and is heading to the Baltimore-Washington area where he will conduct services and two Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations this weekend. Mr. Ames and some others here at Headquarters have been a bit “under the weather” since the Feast, but they are mending. Mr. Wayne Pyle reports that while we were away the Tomorrow’s World telecast produced the highest festival-period count with nearly 14,000 responses in North America—almost 20% over last year’s count. This weekend, I will conduct TWSPs in Indianapolis, Indiana, and Akron, Ohio, and Mr. Dan Hall will conduct TWSPs in Abilene and Midland, Texas. Dr. Scott Winnail will be in Kingston, Jamaica for services and a short conference. Your prayers for these important activities to preach the Gospel will be appreciated. Please remember God’s people who are in need of prayers for their healing and for serious challenges they are facing.—DSW

Prayer Request: Leona Bonjour, Judie Lowe and Glenda Stephenson

We would like to request the fervent prayers of the brethren for Leona Bonjour, Judie Lowe and Glenda Stephenson. Mrs. Bonjour was diagnosed this week with Stage 4 cancer; Mrs. Stephenson was also diagnosed this week with cancer (cervical); and Mrs. Lowe was also recently diagnosed with advanced cancer. Both Mrs. Bonjour and Mrs. Stephenson serve tirelessly here at Headquarters, in the Mail Processing and Duplicating Departments, respectively, and Mrs. Lowe serves alongside her husband, Mr. Jack Lowe, who is the Area Pastor in Georgia and Alabama. The intercessory prayers of the brethren for their complete healing are greatly appreciated.

Personal Hymnals

Personal hymnals have now arrived from the printer! Now that the office staff is back from the Feast, we will soon begin processing the distribution of the hymnals to brethren. Stay tuned for further news about the hymnals!

Living Youth Programs

As we move into the fall Season, we are continuing our weekly On-Line Bible Study each Sunday evening. Last Sunday, we reviewed the celebration of Halloween, and why we avoid taking part in it. For notes, a recording of the study, or to take our “What do you know about Halloween?” challenge quiz, go to livingyouth.org!

This Sunday evening, November 6, we will be continuing our study of the scriptures… step by step! However, before we get into the study, we will begin by doing a special live “web-cam call in” segment where you can share your Favorite Feast Experience with other teens—right from your computer. All you need to do is show for the Bible Study for more instructions! The room will open at 7:00 p.m. (ET), and the action will begin at 7:30 p.m. (ET). To participate, just go to www.livingyouth.org and look for the Bible Study icon and instructions. Don’t miss it!—Jonathan McNair

Are You a Peacemaker? Jesus Christ explained a fundamental aspect of Christianity when He told His disciples, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God” (Matthew 5:9). The Apostle Paul advised brethren in Rome that Christians should do all they can to “live peaceably with all men” (Romans 12:17-21). Paul explained that we can become peacemakers by not seeking revenge, by not mistreating others when we are mistreated and by overcoming evil with good. Solomon wisely observed, “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger” (Proverbs 15:1). Solomon also stated, “He who covers [overlooks and forgives] a transgression seeks love, but he who repeats [keeps talking about or won’t let go of] a matter separates friends” (Proverbs 17:9). Jesus warned that reacting angrily to a brother or sister is the same as murder, beca use it breaks the spirit of the law (Matthew 5:21-26). Real peacemakers are willing to go to their brother or sister when problems arise and talk things over in a spirit of meekness (Matthew 18:15; James 3:17-18). One important lesson we must learn as Christians is that peace comes when we follow and learn to apply the laws of God. David wrote, “Great peace have those who love Your law” (Psalm 119:165).

Have a peaceful and profitable Sabbath,

News and Prophecy—November 3, 2011

EU Splitting and Germany Leads. When 27 EU leaders met in Brussels last week to discuss how to save their common currency, the ten non-members of the eurozone (including Britain, Denmark and Poland) were asked to leave the eight-hour meeting that followed a reception! The debt crisis in Europe is being used to move the 17 eurozone members toward political union and the formation of a European state. “Under an agenda forged by Sarkozy [France] and Merkel [Germany], the eurozone is to develop into a powerful core of the European Union, with new institutions that were unforeseen in EU treaties and never legitimized by European voters” (Sunday Times, October 30, 2011). A German news source reports, “This new Europe [‘Merkel’s Europe’] has a nearly hegemonic leader, namely Germany” (Spiegel Online, October 31, 2011). However, this 17-nation core of the eurozone may be short-lived. Northern European nations favor free trade, while the Mediterranean countries favor state-run industries and protectionism. The financial crisis in Greece could reduce the numbers in the core group if Greece leaves or is expelled from the eurozone (euobserver.com, November 3, 2011)—and other nations could follow. Bible prophecies have long foretold that at the end of the age a group of ten kings would surrender their sovereignty to a centralized European Beast power, overseen by a powerful church (see Revelation 17). The events in Europe are bringing these ancient prophecies into sharper focus.

Vatican Calls for World Financial Governing Body. A recent report by the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace proposes the “establishment of a supranational authority to oversee the global economy” (New York Times, October 24, 2011). Although the Vatican suggested that this new governing body be housed within the United Nations, a leading French financial regulator suggested to a meeting of Roman Catholic bishops in Brussels that the role of this world financial body could be played by a United States of Europe. He stated further, “Euro-using countries should establish joint economic governance despite the ‘unease’ of non-euro EU members over a ‘two-speed’ union or resistance among EU voters to a ‘federal leap’” (euobserver.com, October 28, 2011). While calls from the Vatican for an international financial body may sound strange, Bibl e prophecies foretold such a move thousands of years ago. The Apostle John records that at the end of the age, the “merchants of the earth” will become rich through the activities of a European Beast power overseen by a great church (Revelation 18:3, 15). This system will be given authority over every “tribe, tongue, and nation,” and no one will be able to buy or sell without its sanction (Revelation 13:1-18). This global system called “Babylon the great” will only last a short time before it is brought down by the return of Jesus Christ (Revelation 18:1-11; Daniel 2:44-45). Philippines Update: Typhoon Nesat

Before the Feast of Trumpets, Typhoon Nesat made landfall in the Philippines. Following is a report by Miss Merle Chua of the Philippines Office, sent on September 30: “According to Mr. Basilio Osillos, the brethren, particularly in the Cagayan and Isabela areas, where the Typhoon eye made landfall, did not suffer any damages. The daughter of Mrs. Lolita Martin in San Mateo, Isabella, sent text messages about how fearful they were because of the strong winds. Thankfully their properties are ok….. Mr. Jes Puzon was able to conduct services in Baguio for Trumpets yesterday. The brethren in Manila are coping ok, and most of the brethren were able to attend Trumpets in Quezon City where they had a full house yesterday.”

Goals for the Coming Year: In the book of Proverbs, Solomon advises, “Ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established. Do not turn to the right or the left; remove your foot from evil” (Proverbs 4:26-27). As we return from the Feast, inspired by the sermons and fellowship, it is a good time to think about setting goals for the coming year. What changes would you like to make or do you need to make to improve your physical or spiritual health? What can you do to improve your relationship with God or with your family? What can you do to serve God and others more effectively? How can you prepare now for the Kingdom of God? It will be profitable to think and pray about these issues in the days just ahead. The Apostle Paul urged Christians to “walk circumspectly [carefully, diligently]” and to make the most of the time at our disposal (Ephesians 5:15-16). Peter exhorted his audience to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). What goals can you set and work toward in the coming year that will help you prepare for the Kingdom of God? You might consider reviewing the Bible Study Course, reading a booklet per week or month, studying a different book in the Bible each month or taking a Living University course. Now is the time to prepare for the future!

Have a profitable Sabbath,

News and Prophecy—October 27, 2011

Earthquakes Shake the Globe. On Sunday, October 23, a 7.2 earthquake shook Turkey and destroyed thousands of buildings, killed more than 500 people, injured more than 1,600 and left as many as 40,000 homeless (Telegraph, October 27, 2011; Washington Post, October 27, 2011). On October 26, a 3.2 quake rattled the San Francisco Bay area of California and a 6.0 quake struck the South Pacific region near Fiji—just about a month after a 7.2 quake shook the same region of the “Ring of Fire,” which stretches around the Pacific Rim (washingtonpost.com, October 26, 2011; CNN Wire Staff, October 26 and September 15, 2011). Jesus admonished His disciples that they should mourn and care for those who are afflicted (Matthew 5:4). He also prophesied that as we approach the end of the age, there will be “earthquakes in var ious places” and other natural disasters (Matthew 24:7). Bible prophecies indicate that the increasing frequency and severity of these traumatic events will be the “beginning of sorrows” that will mark the imminent return of Jesus Christ to this earth (Matthew 24:8). Christians need to watch as these events begin to dominate world news and pray earnestly, “Thy kingdom come!”

Coming Eurasian Union. In a recent Russian Izvestia article, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin shared his vision for a Eurasian Union. Mr. Putin noted this future union would include several former “Eastern Block” nations, and also nations from Asia and the Pacific Rim. His vision calls for “a close integration based on new values and economic and political foundation [that] is a demand of the present time.” Mr. Putin commented that “Along with other key players and regional structures, such as the European Union, the United States, China and the Asia Pacific Economic Community, it should ensure stability of global development” (Associated Press, October 4, 2011). Bible prophecy has long-foretold of something very similar to Mr. Putin’s vision f or a Eurasian Union, but with a very different outcome! Revelation 13 and Daniel 11:40-44 indicate that an end-time European Beast power [the King of the North] will move into the Glorious Land (Israel), but the Beast will be disturbed by news from the “east and the north”—the location of Mr. Putin’s Eurasian Union! Revelation 8 and 9 describe events that will take place during the final year prior to Christ’s return—the Day of the Lord. The sixth trumpet plague of Revelation 9:13-19 and Daniel 11:44 describe a 200-million-man army that will descend on Jerusalem from the East. This army will kill one-third of mankind and destroy the armies of the Beast that have occupied Jerusalem. The only nations on earth today that have the potential to muster such a vast army are located in the geographical area of this proposed Eurasian Union—Russia, China, India, etc. For more information on this exciting topic, read our booklet Armageddon and Beyond.

Government vs. Religion. For several centuries, the United States government has strictly avoided getting involved in matters dealing with churches and religion. However, in a current Supreme Court case, a woman is suing the Lutheran Church with a disability claim—something previously prohibited due to interpretation of federal law. A U.S. attorney is arguing that the case has “nothing to do with religion and church practice.” However, several Supreme Court justices expressed “shock” at the reasoning of the U.S. attorney. One justice, appointed by the President, stated she was “amazed” by the argument. Another justice found it “extraordinary” that the U.S. attorney completely dismissed two major clauses in the Bill of Rights related to church freedoms. Opponents of the case claim the goal of the U.S . attorney and the current administration is to denigrate Christianity (Christian Science Monitor, October 5, 2011). Long ago God warned that the Israelite nations would turn away from Him, “those who handle [manipulate] the law did not know Me; the rulers also transgressed against Me… you have forsaken the Lord your God, and the fear of Me is not in you” (Jeremiah 2:8, 19). Many today no longer appreciate the religious freedoms that stem from the Judeo-Christian values upon which America was founded, and Bible prophecies indicate there will be serious consequences, “Your own wickedness will correct you, and your backslidings will rebuke you” (Jeremiah 2:19). The days ahead are going to be instructive and sobering if America continues down this path.—Scott Winnail and Justin Ridgeway

The World Ahead Weekly Update 10/8

Greetings from Charlotte –

The Feast of Trumpets has been very positive and meaningful for brethren around the world. Mr. and Mrs. Meredith were able to visit congregations around Boston, Massachusetts, and Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Mr. and Mrs. Ames had enjoyable visits to combined congregations in Columbus, Ohio, and Indianapolis, Indiana. Mr. and Mrs. Crockett were able to visit congregations in Mississippi. I spent Trumpets in Fort Lauderdale where we invited interested guests to the afternoon service (see below), and then traveled to Ocala, Florida, for the Sabbath. This week Mr. Meredith has conducted a number of meetings, and we are all getting ready to travel to the Feast of Tabernacles either just before or just after the Day of Atonement.

Brethren, we are living in increasingly volatile times. Please pray that God will inspire the speaking, listening and fellowship at the Feast and that He will bless the weather and protect His people as we travel and observe the coming Festival. We have much to be thankful for as we gather to worship God and celebrate the meaning of these important fall Holy Days that picture soon-coming events that will transform this world when Jesus Christ returns to establish the Kingdom of God on this earth. Let’s pray for each other that this coming Feast will be even more meaningful as we see world events moving towards the prophetic climax revealed in the Scriptures. In light of the political dynamics in Europe, the turmoil in the Middle East and the financial troubles threatening the global financial system, we could be facing a very different world when we return home from the Feast. Thank you for your dedication to the Truth and for your support of God’s end-time Work—and have a wonderful Feast!—DSW

Feast of Trumpets Visit to New England

On the Feast of Trumpets, Dr. and Mrs. Meredith visited the New England congregations for a combined service in Worcester, Massachusetts. Members from the Auburn (MA), Pawtucket (RI), Brunswick (ME), and White River Junction (VT/NH) congregations gathered together for services and fellowship. Almost one hundred people enjoyed Dr. Meredith’s sermon, which was followed by a delicious lunch, pleasant conversation, and the afternoon service. On the Sabbath following, Dr. Meredith spoke in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, to our combined Pawtucket and Auburn congregations.
During their visit here, Dr. and Mrs. Meredith were able to tour historic sites in Boston and visit the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library. We look forward to a return visit in the future! – Jonathan McNair

Special Invitations to Feast of Trumpets Service in Fort Lauderdale

The Fort Lauderdale congregation was very pleased to host Dr. Douglas Winnail for a special Feast of Trumpets Holy Day service to which we invited a small, select group of our local Tomorrow’s World subscribers. Working with Headquarters, we invited over 500 Tomorrow’s World subscribers who are also enrolled in the Bible Correspondence Course, or who have also requested certain booklets. After weeks of prayer and anticipation, we were very excited to welcome eleven first-time visitors to the Feast of Trumpets and an additional eight first-time visitors and five returnees for the following Sabbath service on October 1. The overall response to the invitations was about 4 %.

It was exciting to see that God is truly opening the minds of most of these guests. Most of our visitors had become very familiar with the Truth, and because of this invitation, a few are now even going to try to keep the Feast of Tabernacles this year! Most of these invitees commented that receiving this invitation was an answer to their prayers, and they were very complimentary of the warmth and zeal of the local congregation. We are grateful to Headquarters for their leadership and support in putting on this special invitational event. But most importantly, we thank our living God that we could contribute in this small way to the Great Commission to preach the good news of the coming Kingdom of God. – Wyatt Ciesielka, South/Central Florida Pastor

Gulf Coast Combined Services

On Sabbath, October 1, the Ocean Springs, Mississippi, and Pensacola, Florida, churches held combined services in Daphne, Alabama for the visit of Mr. and Mrs. Davy Crockett to that area. The combined services provided a festival-like atmosphere for all those there and everyone enjoyed Mr. Crockett’s sermon titled “Standing on the Promises.” There was an added treat when long-time deacon Mr. Steve Climer was ordained an Elder by Mr. Crockett and Area Pastor Ed Breaux. Mr. Climer will be helping Mr. Breaux in the Pensacola, Ocean Springs and Laurel, Mississippi congregations.

Message from the Carvajal Family:

Dear brethren in the faith,
First of all, I would like to thank God for the strength, the love and the satisfaction of knowing His Master Plan and for knowing the purpose of our suffering.
Also, I would like to thank each one of you, for your constant concern regarding my father, your support, prayers, messages, fastings, etc. My father is sleeping and is healed from all pain. He overcame and awaits the crown for those who have qualified. My father is one of those who are waiting the sound of the last trumpet when the dead in Christ will rise first (1 Thessalonians 4:16). From my mother, brothers, sisters-in-law, nephews and from myself, I would like to convey my deepest gratitude for the love each one of you expressed.

Thank you, thank you very much and may God reward such great attitudes. – Alfredo Carvajal

Feast of Tabernacles 2011

Day of Atonement and Sabbath Services/Contact List

There is an updated list of where Atonement services (October 8) and Sabbath services after the Feast (October 22) will be conducted. This list can be found by going on the MyLCG website (www.cogl.org).

Holy Day Offerings at International Sites

If you are traveling to an international Feast site and want to claim your offering as an income tax deduction in the United States, you should send your offerings to the Charlotte office before you leave the U.S.A. However, since the international sites incur expenses to handle visitors, you may want to consider leaving part of your festival offerings at the site that you attend.

Additional Information Regarding New Braunfels Streaming Video

As previously announced, those with an Internet connection who are unable to attend services during the Feast, will be able to view a live video stream from the New Braunfels, Texas, site. Just log in to your MyLCG account (www.cogl.org/mylcg.shtml), then click on the button under the “Feast 2011 Streaming Video” header in the right column. (The link is currently not visible but will be at Feast time.) Opening night service will start at 7 p.m. (CST), and most services will begin at 10:30 a.m., U.S. Central Time Zone. The video should play with almost any Internet connection, but dial-up users should expect some choppiness. For all users, please make sure you have the latest version of your favorite Internet browser with the most recent version of the Adobe Flash plug-in (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/). For those in different time zones or outside the U.S., you will be able to watch an archive of the stream of that day’s service any time that day. A recording of that service should be available until the next day’s service. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. John Robinson at robinson.jd@gmail.com.

Live Telephone Access to New Braunfels Services Also Available

For those who cannot attend the Feast and do not have access to the Internet to view the streaming video, you can listen to a live audio feed of daily services from New Braunfels via your telephone by following these instructions: five minutes prior to daily services, or any time during services, dial 361-288-1816 and within the first few rings you should be connected to a live feed. Very important: Please mute your telephone during the call. This is basically a conference call, so if you don’t mute your telephone everyone on the call will hear the background noise coming from your phone which will drown out the feed. People who fail to mute their phones will be dropped from the call. Thanks for your help! For any questions contact Mr. Jonathan Bueno before or any time during the Feast at Jbueno144@gmail.com or 361-331-1099.

These instructions, along with the daily schedule, are available at www.fottexas.org.

Hymnals for the Feast

Brethren are encouraged to bring a hymnal (one or two songbooks per household) from their local congregation’s supply after the Day of Atonement for use at the Feast. They should bring back to their congregations the same hymnals, after the Feast, so that an equal number of books is returned to each congregation.

Festival Survey: Now Online!

Every year we have a survey taken at the Feast to get feedback from brethren. This year the survey can be taken online at the following address: http://fotsurvey.lcg.org/. We ask that all households fill out this online survey form towards the end of the Feast. This yearly survey provides helpful information on festival planning for next year. For those who do not have Internet access, hard-copy forms of the survey will also be provided at the Feast site where you will be attending..

Have a wonderful, safe, and inspiring Feast, everyone!—Festival Office

Mail Processing Department

Holy Day Offering Envelopes: With the current problems in the U.S. postal system, we encourage all U.S. brethren to be prepared to bring their own envelopes for the offerings on the Feast of Trumpets and the Day of Atonement. If you use your own envelope, please be sure to write your Personal Identification Number on it. You can find your PIN on the Tomorrow’s World magazine label. Extra green envelopes should also be available from ushers at services on these two Holy Days.

Finance Department

Attention ministers: With the fall Festival season in high gear, the accounting staff would like to remind you that you should keep your receipts for Festival expenses separate from your regular Minex. We track all expenses by categories, such as local congregation, Feast, TWSP, youth camp, etc. A separate expense form should be submitted for each month and category. If you need updated forms, please log in to your MyLCG account on www.cogl.org and go to “Finance Forms” under the “Church Administration” section. It can add several days of processing time for reimbursement when expenses are not submitted properly.

Watch and Be Ready! The God we worship is a God of love who has revealed the future to those He has called to serve Him (Amos 3:7; Genesis 18:17). Jesus repeatedly warned His disciples to be watchful and alert as the end of the age approaches. He stated that we should avoid getting caught up in the cares of this world—parties, material pursuits, the World Series, World Cup events, political contests, personal concerns, and other things that get our minds off the big picture (Matthew 24:37-39; Mark 13:33-37; Luke 21:34-36). The Apostle Paul delivered the same sobering message for those of us living at the close of the age—that the day of the Lord will come as a “thief in the night” and that “sudden destruction” will catch many by surprise—so we must “watch and be sober” and not be caught sleeping (1 Thessalonians 5). As we see the world and especially the Isra elite nations turning further away from God and His ways—literally despising the laws of God—we need to remember that there will be consequences (Leviticus 26; Ezekiel 7). We are told repeatedly we must “come out” of this evil world if we want to avoid the consequences that are coming (2 Corinthians 6:17; Revelation 18:4) because these prophecies about the end time are sure and certain (Daniel 2:45). This is why Jesus said that we need to “watch” and “be ready”… that we “may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man” at His coming (Matthew 24:42-44; Luke 21:36).
Have a profitable Sabbath and a wonderful Feast,
Douglas S. Winnail

News and Prophecy—October 6, 2011

The Future of Germany and Europe: Last Friday the German parliament symbolically voted to continue supporting European debt relief. Internally, the parliament was split with representatives refusing to further support EU debt by giving up German sovereignty through a fiscal union. A Bavarian representative warned that “…the Free State of Bavaria will not take one step further towards an EMU fiscal union or debt pool.” According to a seasoned journalist, “Germans have begun to sense that the preservation of their own democracy and rule of law is in conflict with demands from Europe. They must choose one or the other” (The Telegraph, September 30, 2011). Meanwhile, with Greece’s looming default and an increasing number of EU nations calling for its exit from the EU, economists are ponde ring the ramifications of such an event. “The prospect of a Greek default is viewed as increasing the chances of others, which in turn is seen to threaten banks holding billions of dollars of government bonds. The bill for rebuilding the banks lies with already indebted governments. If confidence continues to wane, a run on a country and its banks could drive a country from the euro zone” (Wall Street Journal, September 30, 2011). What might happen if multiple nations default and possibly leave the euro zone? With strong German feelings against relinquishing national or fiscal sovereignty, and the possibility of other nations “leaving” the euro, the concept of a “European core” of nations subject to German fiscal and political rules is becoming more likely. Scripture highlights that ten kings will “give” their power over to a centralized European Beast power, backed by a mother church (see Revelation 17). We appear to be watching events that God is guiding in Europe to bring His prophecies to pass!

More German-U.S. Friction: Last week President Barack Obama “rebuked EU leaders for failing to recapitalize banks and allowing the debt crisis to escalate to the point where it is scaring the world.” Reaction from the German finance minister, Wolfgang Schäuble, was one of scorn, “I don’t understand how anyone in the European Commission can have such a stupid idea [spending one’s way out of a debt crisis]. The result would be to endanger the AAA sovereign debt ratings of other member states. It makes no sense.” Mr. Schäuble basically told Washington to “mind its own business” following Mr. Obama’s comments. “It’s always much easier to give advice to others than to decide for yourself. I am well prepared to give advice to the U.S. government.” Some are concerned that Mr. Shäuble’s comments could anger the U.S., which is currently “propping up” EU debt with U.S. dollars (The Telegraph, September 27, 2011). The once-strong relationship between Germany and the U.S. was hit hard at the start of the Gulf War. It took another “hit” this week. Bible prophecy reveals that in the future, the German-led European Beast power will become a powerful adversary of many Israelite-descended nations (Isaiah 10:5-6; Hosea 11) during a time God refers to as the “time of Jacob’s trouble” (Jeremiah 30:7). As world events move forward, look for further alienation of the U.S., Britain, and other western European and British-descended nations. For more information, see our booklet, The United States and Great Britain in Prophecy.

God Blesses Feast of Tabernacles Travel: For the last several years, oil prices have dropped right around the time of the fall Holy Days (fall in the northern hemisphere, that is). This year appears to be the same. Gasoline (petrol) prices have been dropping for the last several weeks now. Monday, oil reached its lowest price since September 2010. It ended trading in New York at $78 per barrel. Experts believe it will stay low to year’s end (Associated Press, October 3, 2011). Thousands of years ago, God gave His people the command to keep His annual festivals, including the Feast of Tabernacles (see Leviticus 23). These days were to be statutes “forever” and blessings were promised to those who keep them, and the rest of God’s laws (Deuteronomy 14:29). It is both interesting and encouraging to see a tre nd in dropping gasoline prices (which some would call “chance”) just prior to the “pilgrim” Feast of Tabernacles—a time when God’s people are commanded to travel to locations where He has chosen to place His name (Deuteronomy 14:22-26). In allowing fuel prices to drop, God is blessing the obedience of His people who are willing to travel to worship Him at this very important time of year. The World Ahead Weekly Update 10/1

Greetings from Charlotte –

After a tumultuous season politically, economically, and in the weather, we are grateful that God’s Holy Days have finally arrived, just in time! With the Feast of Trumpets tomorrow and the Day of Atonement just ten days away, and the Feast of Tabernacles following quickly after, it’s a wonderful time to immerse ourselves fully in God’s plan of salvation for all mankind. Dr. and Mrs. Roderick Meredith are in Boston, Massachusetts, this weekend for the Feast of Trumpets and the weekly Sabbath; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Ames are in Columbus, Ohio, and Indianapolis, Indiana; and Dr. Douglas Winnail is in Fort Lauderdale and Ocala, Florida.

Mr. Wayne Pyle reports that last week’s Tomorrow’s World telecast, “Reaping the Whirlwind” is expected to reach nearly 4,000 responses. He also reports that the telecast has now been viewed by 2.8 million households over the past twelve months—over 20 million households since its inception in 1999. According to Nielsen’s, more than 15% of all North American TV households have now viewed the telecast at least one time. We are certainly grateful for the avenues God has given us to preach and publish the Gospel! Please pray for the family of Mr. Sergio Carvajal, our elder in Chile, who recently died after a prolonged illness (cards and letters of encouragement may be sent to the address below). And please remember all of our brethren beset with health difficulties, especially those who won’t be able to attend the Feast.—RMc

Panama City Host Hotel—Wyndham Bay Point

Some of you registered for Panama City may have received e-mail messages from the Bay Point Marriott regarding their name change to Wyndham Bay Point Resort. This is a change in name only, and should have no effect on our Feast arrangements since the same personnel will still be on site. Unless you want to make changes to your reservation there is no need to contact the Marriott/Wyndham. Your reservation is retained and will be honored. The Wyndham also wanted to change the name of the street since it was also named Marriott. We have listed the new information below.

Wyndham Bay Point Resort

Atonement and Sabbath Services/Contact List

Brethren can now find out where Atonement services (October 8) and Sabbath services after the Feast (October 22) will be held. This may be especially useful for brethren travelling on the way to or on the way home from the Feast. The list also provides a contact in the local congregation, if you need more information. You can access this list by going on the MyLCG website (www.cogl.org).

Beach Parties—Appropriate Swimwear for the Feast

Appropriate beach attire for women and men is swimwear that is modest and in good taste. We are to be guided by the two great commandments—to love God and love neighbor (Matthew 22:37-39; Mark 12:29-31)—so as not to offend God or neighbor in our dress at the Feast. Fathers and husbands have a responsibility to be leaders in their family to teach and guide regarding what is appropriate and what is not (Ezekiel 22:26).

New Braunfels Feast Video Streaming Instructions

For those with an Internet connection who are unable to attend services during the Feast, you will be able to view a live video stream from the New Braunfels, Texas site. Just log into your MyLCG account (www.cogl.org/mylcg.shtml), then click on the button under the “Feast 2011 Streaming Video” header in the right column. Opening night service will start at 7 p.m. (CST), and most services will begin at 10:30 a.m., U.S. Central Time Zone. The video should play with almost any Internet connection, but dial-up users should expect some choppiness. For all users, please make sure you have the latest version of your favorite Internet browser with the most current version of the Adobe Flash plug-in (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/). Orford, Quebec (Repeat Announcement)

With the Feast coming very quickly, we would like to remind all the talented people of the Church of God who are coming to Mont Orford, QC, Canada not to forget their guitars, harmonicas, tap shoes, etc. On Sunday night during the Feast, we will be holding a Talent Show. Whether you are a juggler, musician, singer, tap dancer, mime or other, come and brighten our evening with your skills. On another subject, remember that the Feast is in mid-October this year and, therefore, the temperature may be cold. Do remember to bring warm clothes and warm shoes or boots. Also, please do not forget that this is a bilingual site. Remember, each person must bring his own FM radio receiver and earphones for translation purposes. These can be purchased for less than $10 at any electronics store. Most services will be held in English, but two will be in French. Translation into both languages will be provided.—Marc Arseneault

If you need updated forms, please log into your MyLCG account on www.cogl.org and go to “Finance Forms” under the “Church Administration” section. It can add several days of processing time for reimbursement when expenses are not submitted properly.

Comments

Satan the Devil, Banished: After the Feast of Trumpets, the Day of Atonement comes just nine days later. With the burst of activity just before the Feast of Tabernacles, it’s easy to gloss over and miss the meaning of this vital Holy Day. Without the Day of Atonement—symbolizing the binding of Satan the Devil—the peaceful and prosperous Millennium simply would not happen.

As the Day of Atonement draws near, let’s meditate on its meaning for the world, for the Church, and for us personally. We have an enemy who is active day and night seeking to make us stumble and discourage us, especially as the Feasts draw near. But the Apostle Peter wrote, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world” (1 Peter 5:8-9). It’s wonderful to contemplate what a profound difference it will make in society when this hateful being’s evil work is stopped. How grateful we can be to observe the Day of Atonement and learn how God will make that happen!

Have a restful and rejuvenating Sabbath,
Rod McNair

News and Prophecy—September 28, 2011

Palestinian Statehood? Actions in the UN last week forced discussions about a future Palestine. Since Palestinian president Abbas made his request, five EU nations, including France, have pushed to “upgrade” Palestinian territories to “full-membership” in the UN. Three other EU nations have joined the UK and U.S. in opposition. Many UN members are avoiding the discussion in support of restarting the stalled peace talks. “The potential UN vote on Palestine’s status could end up splitting the EU and causing a clash with the US in what diplomats are calling a ‘train wreck’” (EU Observer, September 26, 2011). After his UN speech on Sunday, Mr. Abbas returned home, vowing to resist peace talks unless Palestine is granted statehood and Israel stops expanding settlements in the West Bank (Reuters, September 25, 2011). However he did announce that a “Palestinian Spring” has begun (Associated Press, September 25, 2011). The Palestinian statehood issue is putting more pressure on Israel and its neighbors. Christ warned that, one day, Jerusalem will be surrounded by armies, and eventually “trampled” by “Gentiles” for 3.5 years (Luke 21:20-24, Revelation 11:2). Events today are building toward this sobering, prophesied time.

A War in Europe in 10 Years? Poland now holds the EU’s rotating presidency and its finance minister, Jacek Rostowski, made this prediction two weeks ago. On September 14, Mr. Rostowski spoke to MEPs (members of parliament) in Strasbourg. In his speech, he “warned of the need to act rapidly to prevent grave danger for the EU.” This comment followed growing speculation Greece will default on its EU loans. Swiss financial giant UBS just released a report titled, “Euro Break Up—The Consequences.” Reacting to the report, Mr. Rostowski commented, “There is no doubt we are in danger. Europe is in danger.” He ended his speech by recalling a recent discussion with a friend who now heads a major bank, “We were talking about the crisis in eurozone. He told m e ‘You know, after all these political shocks, economic shocks, it is very rare indeed that in the next 10 years we could avoid a war.’ A war ladies and gentlemen. I am really thinking about obtaining a green card for my kids in the United States.” Mr. Rostowski later clarified to a reporter that he had very carefully chosen the words of his speech. “He said that the prospect of war is not likely ‘within a four-year legislative time frame… Not in the months ahead, but maybe over a 10-year time frame, this could place us in a context that is almost unimaginable at the moment’” (EU Observer, September 14, 2011). Mr. Rostowski’s comments may have been politically motivated, but Bible prophecy reveals that upheaval is in store for Europe as a final configuration of 10 kingdoms, or possibly nations, settle out “on top.” This elite group will form the final Beast power of Revelation (Daniel 2:41-43; Revelation 13:4-7, 17:7-13). This Beast will eventually war against a strong Arab power (Daniel 11:40-43). This Beast will also capture and even destroy much of the population of the Israelite-descended nations (Amos 4:10; 5:2-3)—several of which are nations of modern Europe. For more information on this fascinating topic, review our booklet, The Beast of Revelation.

Another Super Bug? “The fungus, Candida albicans, is widespread among humans. It is relatively harmless to healthy people but can be fatal to hospital patients with weak immune systems.” It causes 25% of hospital blood infections and is an opportunistic infection that moves from the gut to the blood stream when body defenses are low. Like MRSA and C. difficil (“C. dif”), this fungus has the ability to develop resistance to treatment. At the recent Society for General Microbiology conference, Dr. Carol Munro of Aberdeen University acknowledged, “C. albicans does not infect as many people as MRSA but doctors are so scared of people getting infections that they bombard them with drugs from the start which weakens the immune system.” When severe infections set in, there is a 50% death ra te from the disease (Telegraph, September 7, 2011). Disease and “pestilence” are some of the “signs of the end of the age” Christ listed in Matthew 24:7-8. In modern society, rather than live healthier lives and turn to God first for healing when sick (see James 5:13-16), most people put their complete faith and trust in doctors, hospitals and medicine. One day soon most diseases will disappear because of obedience to God’s laws (Exodus 15:26). What will that world be like—a world free of disease? For more information on the topic of healing, review our booklet, Does God Heal Today?—Deborah Lincoln-Strange, James and Sue Bennett, Scott Winnail

The World Ahead Weekly Update 9/24

Greetings from Charlotte –

It has been another eventful week on the world scene. A powerful 6.9 earthquake rocked northeast India, Tibet and Nepal causing landslides and claiming more than 100 lives. Volcanoes are rumbling again in Indonesia, serious flooding and mudslides have ravaged southwest China, a typhoon with 130 mile per hour winds and drenching rain pounded eastern Japan and more hurricanes are brewing off the coasts of Mexico and the USA. Europe continues to struggle with a financial crisis that could impact the composition of the EU; the pope visits Germany and speaks to the German parliament; and the Palestinian bid for statehood in the UN threatens to embolden Israel’s neighbors and embarrass the United States. Ancient prophecies continue to come alive!

Here in Charlotte, Mr. Meredith, Mr. Ames and Mr. King taped three more Tomorrow’s World programs. Mr. Meredith’s latest co-worker letter was mailed to more than 10,000 recipients. Last week’s Tomorrow’s World program by Mr. Ames entitled, “Death, Resurrection and Your Future,” is expected to draw more than 4,900 responses. Mr. Wayne Pyle reports that our Internet and Tomorrow’s World magazines have reached all but two nations in the world: North Korea and the tiny city-nation of San Marino in northern Italy. Mr. Ben Whitfield was encouraged the results of the follow-up Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations in Denver, Colorado, and Casper, Wyoming. The Fall Holy Days begin next Thursday with the Feast of Trumpets—please refer to the announcements below. Plans for the Feas t of Tabernacles are coming together well. Please pray that God will inspire and bless the Fall Holy Day season and protect His people has they travel to where He has placed His name.—DSW

French Update: The French-Speaking Peoples in Prophecy

After almost 20 years out of circulation, Mr. Dibar Apartian’s booklet, Les pays de langue française selon la prophétie (The French-Speaking Peoples in Prophecy), has been republished and is now available online at our website www.MondeDemain.org. It will also be available in print soon. In his booklet, first written in the 1960s, Mr. Apartian traces the origins of the Gauls to the tribe of Reuben, Israel’s son. This work is a great companion to our booklet The United States and Great Britain in Prophecy.

Audience Etiquette at the Feast (it is suggested that copies of the following are made available to the brethren)

As we prepare for the Feast, it is helpful to review some general guidelines of “audience etiquette” at the Feast. Important skills and habits of civility and good manners should be exhibited in all situations, but particularly in a group setting like the Feast. These services are a commanded convocation, as people come before God to hear His word expounded and to enjoy the fellowship of other like-minded people. To enhance the experience and to add to the enjoyment of everyone involved, there are some basic rules of audience etiquette that should be observed by adults and children alike.

In addition to being on time and dressing properly for services, there are other things that all of us can do to enjoy services and our fellowship even more. For example, unless you have some particular need or duties that require you to sit on the aisle, please move to the middle of the row to facilitate seating as people arrive. If you have a particular need that will require you to leave the audience during services, it is prudent to locate a seat near an exit or the restrooms. Taking care of the restroom detail and need for water, etc. prior to the beginning of services will prevent having to exit during services and possibly disturbing other members of the audience.

If someone happens to arrive at the meeting room as the opening or closing prayer is being given or while special music is underway, the courteous thing to do is to wait until the prayer or performance is finished before taking a seat.

Families with small children should take care to train their children at home to sit quietly on a pallet on the floor or in a chair. Small children can be trained to nap at this time. Having a quiet toy or appropriate quiet game to occupy the little ones is a great help in keeping them happily focused so they don’t create a disturbance for those around them in the audience.

As services begin, food and drink should not be taken to one’s seat for consumption during services. The likelihood of a spill or some disruptive accident is eliminated if we avoid eating and drinking during services. Passing of notes or being inattentive for any reason should be avoided during services. To this end, children should sit with their parents during services, not with their friends and their families. The fact is that children can visit with their friends before and after services, but not during services. By sitting with their parents, the temptation to visit with their friends and disrupt those around them should be eliminated.

As services come to a close some people begin to fold up notebooks, open brief cases, etc. even before the minister is finished. This activity in the audience can detract from the close of the sermon and an important point or the conclusion of the message may be missed. We should not begin packing up until after the closing prayer.

After sitting for a couple of hours, children may have a lot of pent up energy. Without thinking, they may run through the hall not realizing that it is not the time or place for such activity. To avoid disruption and potential injury, particularly to our older members, parents should teach their children to refrain from running in the building.

While these principles are important guidelines for conduct in all of our assemblies, they are particularly important during the Feast of Tabernacles, when our crowds are larger and we are interacting with outside people in our various activities. This may seem like a lot of “dos” and “don’ts,” yet practicing simple audience etiquette will add to everyone’s enjoyment of services and ensure that “all things are done decently and in order” at the Feast (1 Corinthians 14:40)!—Festival Office

Blessing of the Little Children

Mark 10:16 says that during Christ’s ministry, when little children were brought to Him, “…He took them up in His arms, laid His hands on them, and blessed them.” Following this example and other Scriptures (Matthew 19:13-15 and Luke 18:15-17), the Church has traditionally conducted the “Blessing of the Little Children” during one of the services at the Feast of Tabernacles. If you have small children (“babes-in-arms”) who have not yet taken part in this very meaningful blessing, check with your Festival Coordinator to find out on which day it will be conducted, and any other pertinent details. If you have any questions about the Blessing of the Little Children in general, please check with your local Pastor.—Festival Office

Naptime Is Over! Jesus warned us to WATCH for a series of events that would signal the end of the age. He said increasing turmoil within nations and threats of wars between nations, spreading droughts, famines, disease epidemics, earthquakes and natural disasters would be the “beginning of sorrows” (Matthew 24:8). Other signs would be the rise of a German-led 10-nation “beast” power in Europe influenced by a notable religious figure—both with links to the Roman Empire—and referred to as the “king of the North” (Daniel 2,7,11). This emerging European power will be challenged by an emerging Islamic coalition referred to as the King of the South, and Jerusalem will become a focal point of contention (Luke 21:20-24). All this will happen as moral decay and corruption in Israelite nations (USA, Britain, etc.) becomes evident and their power and influence begin to fade on the world stage. We are watching these prophesied events happening today! We need to heed the Apostle Paul’s admonition, “The night is far spent, the day is at hand… let us cast off the works of darkness…. Let us walk properly… not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh” (Romans 13:12-14). Brethren, it is time to wake up and get ready for what Jesus said is coming!

Have a profitable Sabbath,

News and Prophecy—September 22, 2011

Pope Rallies World Youth. Last month, hundreds of thousands of Roman Catholic youth from around the globe met in Madrid for World Youth Day (WYD) and to hear Pope Benedict XVI speak. WYD is designed to reach Roman Catholic youth and bring “meaning” to their beliefs. “The general consensus from those who have done research on them [WYD youth] is that World Youth Days tend to combine young people’s taste for stars and big events with a spiritual dimension.” Testimonies show the results. “‘I was really touched by the pope’s words,’ says Jonathan Meunier-Doyon, 16, of Quebec. ‘What he said to us about Christ being a rock on whom we can bu ild our lives has really moved me.’” Stella, age 17, commented, “WYD has been the best experience of my life. When I go home I’ll tell young people not to be afraid to follow Christ.” Lupita Ramírez, 23, from Monterrey, Mexico observed, “We queued for five hours in the Plaza del Sol to see the Pope. If every young person in the world followed Christ, it would be full of peace” (Times, August 27, 2011). These comments reveal a desire in young people to understand the meaning of life and a need for encouragement to live their faith. While the pope’s words appealed to the idealism of many young people, important details were not addressed. The message of WYD only contains “part” of the truth—when the world does follow Christ, it will be full of peace! However, the Scriptures reveal that human beings do not know the way to peace (Isaiah 59:8). Real peace will only come with the return of Jesus Christ (Isaiah 9:6-7) and when the world begins to follow the laws of God (Psalm 119:165). Jesus also warned that at the end of the age many false teachers would use His name and talk of “peace” (Matthew 24:4-5; Jeremiah 8:11). The real way to peace involves teaching young people God’s ways and His truth (Deuteronomy 11:18-21). Youth, like all people, yearn for a hope for the future and to understand the purpose for life. Sadly, today many grow up without real hope. And although the pope provided “some” hope for those attending WYD this year, he was unable to reveal the real meaning of life or the true way to peace. This will happen when Christ returns and the knowledge of God will cover the earth “as the waters cover the sea” (Isaiah 11:9). For more information on this incredible hope, see our booklet Your Ultimate Destiny!

End-Time Scoffers. Professor Richard Dawkins is well known for his philosophical conjecture that life came into existence by chance evolutionary processes. As a “scientist,” Dr. Dawkins prefers to lecture on philosophy, ridiculing people for their “irrational” belief in God. He usually “… declines to talk in San Francisco and New York; these cities are too gloriously godless, as far as he is concerned. ‘As an atheistic lecturer, you are rather wasting your time,’ he says. He prefers the Bible Belt, where controversy is raw.” In a recent interview, Dr. Dawkins commented, “Religion teaches you to be satisfied with nonanswers. It& rsquo;s a sort of crime against childhood.” Yet he also admits, “I did not end up as broadly educated as my Cambridge colleagues, but I graduated probably better equipped to write a book on my chosen subject” (The New York Times, September 19, 2011). Perhaps that is why elements of his arguments ignore basic understandings of other scientific disciplines. Dr. Dawkins is highly intelligent, yet apparently refuses to even consider arguments for the intelligent design of the universe—a stance he has taken since he was a youth. He admits there could be all-powerful god-like beings “out there” who came to that point through evolution, yet he refuses to admit an Eternal God could have created the universe and humanity. Evolutionary theory fails to give “meaning” to life and cannot explain the real future of all mankind. The Bible states, “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God’” (Psalm 14:1). The Apostle Paul warned about those who are “always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth” (2 Timothy 3:7). Dr. Dawkins made a very revealing statement when he said about a respected colleague’s belief in a personal God, “I just don’t get it.” The Bible reveals that an understanding of spiritual things must come from God (1 Corinthians 2:7-14). One of the keys to gaining that understanding comes from humility and being willing to learn from the word of God (Isaiah 66:2). The apostle Peter prophesied “that scoffers will come in the last days” and they would ridicule God and the Scriptures (2 Peter 2-3). For more information on the reality of God, see our booklet, The Rea l God: Proofs and Promises.—James and Sue Bennett, Scott Winnail

The World Ahead Weekly Update 9/17

Greetings from Charlotte –

World events and Bible prophecies continue to converge towards a striking climax! While Israelite nations continue their slide away from God and reap the inevitable consequences, rumors are flying that the eurozone appears to be on the verge of breaking up, and the 27-nation European Union may be headed for a dramatic re-arrangement that could include reducing the number of nations in the Union to the vicinity of ten—the number long-depicted in the Scriptures for the end-time beast power of Daniel 2 and Revelation 17. One observer has noted, “September is likely to be a defining month for the euro area’s destiny.” September will also see the Palestinians make a bid for membership in the UN that could pit America and Israel against the world. As we prepare for the Fall Holy Days—that picture the culminating events in God&rsq uo;s plan for mankind—Satan appears to be preparing for his final attempt to disrupt God’s plan.

This has been a busy week in Charlotte. Mr. Meredith, Mr. Ames and Mr. Rod King are taping new Tomorrow’s World programs. Mr. Meredith chaired a phone meeting for the Council of Elders and is writing a co-worker letter. Last weekend’s TW program by Mr. Meredith on “Answered Prayer” is expected to draw more than 4,100 responses. Mr. John Meakin was able to attend a briefing in London at the residence of the German Ambassador. Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations last weekend by Mr. Rod McNair in Denver, Colorado and Casper, Wyoming drew 59 visitors. Mr. Ben Whitfield will make follow-up presentations this weekend. Mr. Gerald Weston’s presentation in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada last weekend drew 47 guests. Follow-up presentations last weekend in New Orleans, Louisiana and Biloxi, Mississippi resulted in 21 visitors. Please pray that these activities will bear much fruit, and that God will hear the prayers of His people for help and healing.—DSW

*Please note the Feast of Tabernacles announcements below and Mr. Jonathan’s McNair’s report on time spent online.

Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations

Denver, Colorado and Casper, Wyoming: The Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations hosted by the Denver, Colorado and Casper, Wyoming, congregations were given by Pastor Rod McNair on September 10 and 11. The Hampton Inn in Parker, Colorado, was the site for the TWSP in Denver and the C’mon Inn was the site for the TWSP in Casper, Wyoming. There were a total of 79 in attendance in Denver, including 37 guests and 42 members; and 47 in attendance in Casper, with 22 guests and 25 members. Mr. Rod McNair’s presentations were well received by the audience, with many nodding in agreement as he explained the prophesied events that are going to happen shortly in America. Many of the guests in both Denver and Casper were very familiar with the Living Church of God as being the sponsor of the Tomorrow&rs quo;s World program as well as much of our roots being found in what Mr. Herbert W. Armstrong pioneered decades ago. Afterwards, guests and members mingled and talked for several hours with many guests asking about attending Sabbath services with us on a regular basis. Many commented that they would be back next weekend for the follow-up presentation on “Where Is God’s Church Today?”—Ben Whitfield

New Orleans: We had a total of 40 attend the TWSP entitled, “Where Is God’s Church Today?,” in the New Orleans area, including 27 members and 13 guests. I spoke to four individuals after the presentation who asked me some serious questions, especially about Sabbath-keeping, and who indicated an interest in attending services.—Rod Reynolds

Biloxi, Mississippi: The Ocean Springs and Laurel, Mississippi congregations hosted a follow-up Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation on September 11. The PowerPoint presentation, “Where Is God’s Church Today?” was given by Mr. Ed Breaux. There were 32 individuals present for the presentation, including 24 members and 8 guests. Five of the guests had attended the initial presentation and three were there for the first time. During the break, members and guests mingled and enjoyed refreshments and after the presentation two guests asked for the time and location of services in the Biloxi area. It will be interesting to see when and how these presentations bear fruit.—Ed Breaux

Africa Update

Mr. King and I had the immense privilege of meeting with faithful brethren and prospective members, some of whom had not seen a minister of God in many years, in Nigeria, Ghana, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi over the last two weeks.

Our first stop was to meet Dr. Akin in Lagos, Nigeria, who has been patiently serving the congregation, according to instructions from Mr. Apartian, for the past seven years. He has organized services, Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations, and the Feast of Tabernacles in a peaceful setting in the heart of Lagos, with its population of more than 10 million people. We had the pleasure of visiting the hall where Mr. Harold Jackson inaugurated the Lagos congregations in the 1970s. We held services on September 3 in a nearby hotel, followed by a two-part Bible Study including a captivating description by Mr. King of the nations’ migration routes around the globe. Fellowshipping continued in the hotel parking lot before we said our good-byes and everyone made their way home.

Next was a visit to Mr. and Mrs. Agyemang-Duah, who were among the founding members of the London congregation dating back to the mid-60s, now re-established in their home country of Ghana. We also met with members Mr. and Mrs. Djan and Kwame Gokeh from Canada, recently returned to their homeland of Ghana and anxious to see a congregation established and the Gospel preached. One highlight was meeting Mrs. Agyemang-Duah’s 106-year-old mother! Mr. King conducted more visits before flying back to England and then on to Charlotte for the Council of Elder’s teleconference and the filming of two new TW programs.
I flew on to the Democratic Republic of Congo to meet with Mr. and Mrs. Mukendi Kapingamulume. It was with Mr. Mukendi’s help that the Church was first established in the Congo, so we hope that it won’t be long before we can reestablish the Work in Kinshasa. On the Sabbath of September 10, I met with more old-time members, including Mr. Bamongo and his family. I spoke of the importance of government in the Church and our submission to one another. It took more than an hour to reach the distant corner of the huge city of Kinshasa, where we met under a tin-roof “meeting-hall.” It was quite an ordeal since some of the roads we had to take were in total disrepair. It took even longer to come back into the city because the police confiscated a member’s video camera and it took quite some time to have it returned. With upcoming elections, it is normal that there are more controls and such inconveniences.

On the following Monday and Tuesday, I had the pleasure and honor of meeting with one of the patriarchs of the Bujumbura, Burundi congregation, Mr. Wenceslas Kamwenebusa, along with his wife and family. After having shown remarkable patience, his wife, Jacqueline, their daughter, Ada, and son-in-law, Elie Kanigi, having waited 24 years, were baptized. We realized that Satan was doing his best to thwart the baptisms. Mr. and Mrs. Kanigi received news that their house in neighboring Congo had been ransacked, leaving their children traumatized. Courage added to patience, and finally they are now baptized. To add to the joy of the occasion, the Kamwenebusas’ daughter, Prescille, and grandson, Méthode, were also baptized in Lake Tanganyika, the second largest freshwater lake in the world by volume, and the second deepest. Congratulations were in order at the Bible Study in Bujumbura that evening, where 24 of us gathered. There is growing interest in Burundi because of the Internet and high hopes that more people will be called. There is a solid, well-established core of brethren and there is much excitement as plans are laid for regular services in Burundi.

Please pray for the members in these African countries that they can meet in peace and safety and that the foundation is laid so an effective Work of preaching the Gospel can be done.—Rod King and Rees Ellis

Living Youth Programs

A new study, done by psychiatrists at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) ties depression in teenagers to the amount of time spent on the Internet and playing video games. According to the study, “UAMS psychiatrists found that youth who spend five or more hours per day online or playing video games are at a higher risk of depression and suicidal thoughts than teens who play fewer hours” (read article at Todaysthv.com). But time on-line can be worthwhile. Click to our updated Living Youth website at www.livingyouth.org, where you will find items that are interesting and worthwhile for kids and parents. You will also find the link to our Sunday evening Live Online Bible Study. Last week, we talked about the life of Joseph, a young man who showed integrity and character. Don’t miss this week’s follow-up study, where we will continue with the account of how he handled difficult situations in his life—and succeeded!—Jonathan McNair

Feast of Tabernacles 2011

Live video of Feast services streamed from New Braunfels: Once again, there will be a live video stream of daily services and Bible studies from the New Braunfels Feast site for those with Internet access who are unable to attend the Feast. More details will be given in The World Ahead in the coming weeks, but we wanted to let you know of our plans now.

Holy Day Offerings: If you are traveling internationally for the Feast, it is recommended that you leave your Holy Day Offering in your home country. This will ensure that you receive proper documentation for a tax deduction, if your country allows it. You should make an additional offering at the international site you attend, and can plan accordingly. Your attention to these instructions and your use of the preprinted Holy Day envelopes is greatly appreciated.

Hymnals: Brethren are encouraged to bring a hymnal (one or two songbooks per household) from their local congregation’s supply after the Day of Atonement for use at the Feast. They should bring back to their congregations the same hymnals, after the Feast, so that an equal number of books is returned to each congregation.

Chemical Sensitivities: We want to remind everyone while at the Feast to be aware of the sensitivities to perfumes and colognes that some of our brethren have. For some of our brethren, because of serious allergies, walking by someone with a lot of perfume or cologne is not just uncomfortable but can send them to the Emergency Room. Let’s use extra care to show love to others in this way at the Feast—please use moderation.

Health and Feast Travel: As we prepare to depart for the Feast of Tabernacles, it is not uncommon for God’s people to “push themselves” and compromise their sleep and diet. Many of us try to get multiple tasks accomplished ahead of time (regarding work and school) so that we can attend the Feast without worry. Often this “push before the Feast” results in too little sleep and unhealthy eating habits. Then, when we finally get in the car, on the train, on the bus, or on an airplane, our bodies slow down and we get sick. In past years, this has resulted in some bringing the flu or a cold to the Feast site and spreading it to other Church members. If we do arrive at the Feast feeling ill, for the benefit of our brethren, it is important to avoid fellowshipping and attending services until all our symptoms are gone.

Because of the Swine Flu outbreak a couple years ago, many nations are still operating under a heightened state of alert with international travelers. Some nations even require a “health disclosure” in order for tourists to enter their nation. Tourists displaying signs and symptoms of the flu may be detained by the local government until the flu-like symptoms are gone. For God’s people, this could cause us to miss part or even all of the Feast of Tabernacles while we are detained in local quarantine.

For all of us as God’s people, it is essential as we prepare for Feast of Tabernacles travel, to get appropriate rest and maintain a healthful diet filled with fruits and vegetables. Parents should make sure that their children also get adequate rest and eat a very healthful diet before the Feast. For our older brethren, these actions are imperative! In taking measures to stay healthy and improve our health before the Feast, not only will we be more likely to arrive at the Feast “healthy” and not be temporarily detained by the local health officials (if we are traveling abroad), but we will also be physically and mentally prepared to partake of the powerful spiritual food and fellowship that God is preparing for us!

Finance Department

Hall Rentals: November hall rental vouchers should be faxed or mailed to Accounts Payable by September 30 to ensure processing before the feast.

Payments: Please note that our last scheduled day to print reimbursement checks will be Thursday, October 6. We will not be able to print any checks again until Thursday, October 27. Any invoices we receive before October 5 will be paid before the break. Any invoices we receive after October 5 will not be able to be paid until October 27. If you have any questions in regards to specific invoices or payments, please contact Samanthia Kreis in the Accounts Payable Department at 704-844-1960 ext. 2236 or send e-mail to accounting@lcg.org.

Take Time to Think: Today our lives are filled with things that can totally occupy our minds and thoughts: television, video games, iPods, e-mails, cell phones, text messages, deadlines, daily commutes, gossipy conversations, endless routines, etc. Daniel warned that at the end of the age “many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase” (Daniel 12:4). Jesus also warned that “the cares of this world” can “choke the word” and cause us to miss out on the Kingdom of God (Matthew 13:22). As the fall Holy Days approach, we need to remember that one of the biggest challenges Christians face today is the battle for what goes on in our minds—what we think about—which then determines our attitudes and actions. Solomon wrote that as a person “thinks in his heart, so is he&rd quo; (Proverbs 23:7). David observed that a wicked person is proud, does not seek God and “God is in none of his thoughts” (Psalm 10:4). Yet, David was a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22) because he meditated on God’s law daily (Psalm 119:97). In Psalm 23 we read that God allowed David to “lie down in green pastures… beside the still waters.” Such places are conducive to thinking and reflecting on the handiwork of God and His plan and purpose for our lives. If we want to grow and be prepared for the coming Kingdom of God, we need to take time to think and meditate on the word of God. Read a Psalm every morning or evening and meditate on the subjects mentioned in Philippians 4:8. We can develop the mind of God—if we think on these things!

Have a profitable Sabbath,

News and Prophecy—September 15, 2011

Will Europe Own Greece? With the financial crisis weighing heavily on Greece, creditor nations are now discussing the issue of obtaining collateral for money they loan Greece—in the event that Greece proves unable to pay back any loans. Such collateral could include Greek real estate, or shares in state assets such as utility companies. In fact, some have suggested the Greeks could sell some of their islands or even the Acropolis. Although no “deals” have yet to be agreed upon, given Greece’s forecasted inability to repay much of its mounting debt, other nations in Europe could wind up owning much of Greece (www.euractive.com, August 29, 2011). Long ago, God prophesied that at the e nd of the age, ten kings would give “their power and authority to” a European beast power (Revelation 17:7-13). While the Bible does not state exactly how this will occur, events across Europe are beginning to suggest ways in which “power and authority” might be given or surrendered to a central political power. If lending nations begin to demand collateral in assets in exchange for loans to handle the debt crisis, this would be a powerful and sobering precedent to set, not only for Europe, but also for the entire world—especially Israelite countries—because the borrower becomes a servant to the lender (see Deuteronomy 28:44; Proverbs 22:7).

China Buying into Italy? “Italy confirmed it held talks with Chinese officials amid speculation Rome is looking to persuade Beijing to buy its bonds or invest in its companies, while premier Silvio Berlusconi flew to Brussels Tuesday to discuss the market turmoil.” While Berlusconi met with the EU President about Italy’s debt, his government was apparently seeking bailout help from China. The Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times both reported that Italian talks took place last week with the chairman of China Investment Corp. According to a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, “Europe will continue to be one of China’s main investment markets. We will also expand financial and economic cooperation and investment cooperation with European countrie s to jointly address the financial crisis.” China Expert Romeo Orlandi identified the pros and risks of the situation with China: “In principle it’s a win-win situation: Italy needs money, China has the world’s largest reserves. But this means that we must sell pieces of Italy to China.” He added that “the talks may be an indication of how serious Italy’s financial troubles are” (Associated Press, September 13, 2011). Not only do Italy’s recent actions indicate the depth of the nation’s financial woes, they also highlight the tenuous iron-and-clay nature of the European Union—a union of nations whose unstable merger was prophesied millennia ago (Daniel 2:41-43). If China becomes a player in Europe, this may hasten the disruption and rearrangement of the current 27-nation EU. This action could be the beginning of significant developments across Europe.

Oklahoma’s Cattle Industry Is Drying Up. Much of Oklahoma has had no significant rainfall in more than a year, resulting in zero crop growth. As a consequence, there is virtually no local food for cattle and it must be imported at great cost. Ranchers are selling entire herds that have taken a decade or more to build because they have no other choice. In the words of one expert, ranchers are “selling their factories”—referring to the potential for future cattle production—because they see a bleak future in an industry that, in some cases, has been a family business for generations. As entire herds are sold, if moist weather does return to Oklahoma anytime soon, it would take several years to build back to productive cattle levels again (Drover’s Cattle Netwo rk, August 30, 2011). Bible prophecies have long warned that God will punish the Israelite-descended nations if they turn away from Him. Hosea wrote, “Therefore the land will mourn; and everyone who dwells there will waste away with the beasts of the field and the birds of the air; even the fish of the sea will be taken away… because they have ceased obeying the Lord” (Hosea 4:3, 10). Moses also conveyed God’s warning, “if you do not obey Me, and do not observe all these commandments… your strength shall be spent in vain; for your land shall not yield its produce, nor shall the trees of the land yield their fruit” (Leviticus 26:14-20). As Israelite nations turn away from the laws of God, we are watching these ancient prophecies coming alive in headlines today!—John Meakin, Gene Hilgenberg and Scott Winnail

The World Ahead Weekly Update 9/10

Greetings from Charlotte –

Weather-related disasters continue to make headlines in the USA. Last weekend’s tropical storm Lee that drenched the Gulf Coast forced the cancellation of Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations scheduled for New Orleans, Louisiana, and Biloxi, Mississippi. High temperatures and tinder-dry conditions across the southwest have spawned some of the worst wildfires in the history of Texas. Some of our members there have had to evacuate homes, but no lives or member properties have been lost. This week a number of very significant statements have appeared about the urgent need to form a “United States of Europe” to combat the European debt crisis (see News and Prophecy section). This week in Charlotte, Mr. Meredith has been writing, and holding meetings about the Internet. Mr. Hernandez and I and several staff members had a productive meeting by phone with our Board members in Costa Rica. Mr. Meredith and Mr. Ames spoke to the office employees about the importance of focusing on finishing the end-time Work of God. Last weekend’s Tomorrow’s World television program by Mr. Wallace Smith entitled, “Diagnosis: Christianity,” is expected to draw more than 4,500 responses. This weekend Mr. Rod McNair will present TWSPs in Denver, Colorado, and Casper, Wyoming. Follow-up TWSPs are rescheduled for New Orleans and Biloxi, Mississippi. Please keep all of these activities in your prayers.—DSW

Prayer Request: Larry Rawson

Mr. Larry Rawson was recently in the hospital with a heart attack. He is also still dealing with cancer of the spine, which he has had for the past five years. He also has restless leg syndrome. Mr. Rawson is an elder in the Tampa congregation and truly has faith that God will lift him up so he may attend the Feast of Tabernacles in Panama City this year. He believes that with all of God’s people praying for him, he will gain the strength and courage to attend. Let’s all give fervent prayers for Mr. Rawson’s healing so he may not only attend the Feast this year, but also so that he may return to serving his family and the local congregation.—Larry and Marie Rawson, Wyatt Ciesielka

Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations

Biloxi, Mississippi: The Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation hosted by the Ocean Springs, Mississippi, congregation was given by Dr. Douglas Winnail on August 28. The Super 8 Conference Center in Biloxi, Mississippi was the site for the TWSP. There were a total of 48 in attendance, including 17 guests and 31 members. Dr. Winnail’s presentation was well received by the audience, with many nodding in agreement as he explained the prophesied events that are going to happen shortly in America. Afterwards, guests and members mingled and talked for about one hour with seven individuals asking about attending services with us next Sabbath. Many commented that they would be back next Sunday for the follow-up presentation.—Ed Breaux

Australasian Update

Mr. Bruce Tyler reports: Over the last two months, I visited our brethren in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. Even though they seem “far away” from everything, it is wonderful to see their loyalty and support of God’s Work and Headquarters in Charlotte.

Recently, we began some advertising on Google Ads at a relatively small expense, which has resulted in around 1,500 to 2,000 new people logging on to our Headquarters’ website each week. These individuals are not only from Australia, but also from Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. We hope to add Thailand, Philippines, Papua New Guinea and possibly India to the list in the near future.

One other exciting development is a new door opening to us via television in New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and in Victoria, as well as on the Gold Coast in Southern Queensland. The scheduled start date is September 25, just before the Feast of Trumpets. We pray this will be a door that will eventually help open other doors to the commercial television networks in this country. We are looking forward to knowing that a few more humans on the planet will have the opportunity to hear the Truth. But there is still a long way to go yet!

Fourteen Baptisms in India

I left for Kolkata on Tuesday, August 16. The next day, two prospective members came to visit me. We discussed many matters and I counseled them for baptism. They were baptized in the Water Park. On Thursday, I flew from Kolkata to Imphal. I was met by Subash Singh and Prem Kumar. After resting a few hours, five members visited me at the hotel and we discussed my program for the next few days. On Friday, I held a Bible study, speaking on “Counting the Cost” and counseling 12 people for baptism. Most of these people have been studying the Truth for a number of years and have been eagerly waiting to be baptized.

On Sabbath morning I gave the sermon on “Building Faith.” There were 27 members and we had a smooth and orderly service. After the morning service, we viewed a slideshow of my visit to Thailand and Mr. Bruce Tyler’s visit to Malaysia. On Sunday morning, I briefed those who were to be baptized about their commitment and covenant with God. At the public swimming pool, not very far from Sani Mao’s home, I baptized 12 new people into the Body of Christ. It was a very inspiring and unforgettable moment for all of us. I laid hands on them and asked God for the gift of the Holy Spirit to guide, lead and strengthen them. It was a joyful day for all of us in the Church.

We returned to Sani Mao’s home to have tea and I spoke and encouraged the newly baptized members about their commitment and loyalty to the Truth. We had a splendid lunch with all the brethren and had a lengthy question and answer session. There were many questions about Sabbath keeping, Tomorrow’s World, our future spirit body, keeping the law of God, kings and priests and many other questions. Later in the afternoon, we visited the colorful rose garden. This concluded my trip to Manipur in eastern India, which was very inspiring and successful. We now have 25 adult members and 10 children attending the Living Church of God in India. All the members are growing spiritually and continue to learn and understand more of God’s truth. We look forward to further growth in the coming months.—Rajan Moses

Reaching Indochina

Our July trip to Mae Sot, Thailand was profitable as far as the growth of our little group here is concerned. We are now ready to build layers upon the foundation laid and nurtured by the late Mr. Mem Pho Saw, an incredible individual we all loved. The brethren in this area speak Burmese, Thai and Karen. Without the power of God’s Spirit, it seems impossible for us to preach the Gospel in this part of the world. Yet, God always knows what to do with His Church in any part of the world, including Mae Sot, Thailand. We now have Mr. Ryan Foster and his wife, La Wan, working with us. They translate our English articles into the local languages.

Nimrod and his mother Semiramis have successfully confused the world with their pagan teachings and we can see the result of this confusion right before our eyes. Our job in introducing, teaching, and guiding God’s people is a challenge of protecting them from pagan ideas. Just as Paul said in Athens, “TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you” (Acts 17:23, KJV). We have been struggling for all these years in giving our group a deeper understanding in how to worship and respect the God of the Bible, and most importantly, to guide them so that they can walk perfectly before God. The Work in Thailand, Myanmar, and other neighboring Indo-Chinese countries is far from being finished, and we do need your prayers so that we can reach more people to witness the Good News about the Kingdom of God. God the Father will surely call more peop le in this part of the world as the end time is drawing nearer (John 6:44). May you always remember our Work and God’s people in this part of the world in your daily prayers.—Arius Nusantara

Mail Processing Department

The green Fall Holy Day envelopes have been sent to our membership. Please note that the envelopes to the Church youth were mailed first, so they will probably receive them before their parents receive theirs. The package of Holy Day envelopes for adults includes green LCG bumper stickers.

Feast of Tabernacles 2011

This year again, we will be publishing a list showing where Atonement (October 8) and Sabbath (October 22) services will be conducted. We have asked Pastors to provide the Festival Office with this information, and this list will be compiled and posted on the MyLCG (www.cogl.org) website in the next couple of weeks.

Where Is Your Heart? The Scriptures reveal that God looks on the heart (1 Samuel 16:7) and that He examines and tests our hearts and minds (Psalm 7:9)—because “a man’s heart reveals the man” (Proverbs 27:19). Our priorities—what we think about and what we do or plan to do—reveal what is truly in our heart. This is why Jesus said, “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). When God sees that our priorities are focused in the right direction, He will also provide many of our personal desires (Mark 10:29-30)—in His time and in His way. Setting right priorities is important when we follow the biblical admonition to do whatever we do with all our might (Ecclesiastes 9:10). Jesus Christ exemplified these principles in His own life. Jesus was a mission-oriented person. He told His disciples, “My food [nourishment, focus, consuming desire] is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work” (John 4:34). Jesus was totally focused on His mission of preaching the Gospel, warning the world and preparing a people to reign with Him in the coming Kingdom of God. Regarding priorities, Jesus taught, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21). Jesus’ time, talents and resources were totally committed to His mission —He was not drawn off course by trials or the “cares of this world” (Matthew 13:18-23). Jesus’ heart was in the Work of God! We need to periodically examine our priorities and ask the question, “Where is our heart?”

Have a profitable Sabbath,

News and Prophecy—September 8, 2011

Financial Crisis Brings Calls for United Europe! Last week in Berlin, former German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder called the creation of a “United States of Europe… to avoid future economic crises” declaring “we will have to give up national sovereignty” to a common government (Reuters.com, September 4, 2011). In Paris, former head of the European Central Bank, Jean-Claude Trichet, stated the European project was “incomplete” and the EU required a “federal government with a federal finance minister” (euobserver.com, September 6, 2011). In Australia, the head of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, observed that dealing with the European debt crisis will demand “more integration at least for the euro area” (euobserver.com, September 7, 2011). These statements echo what former German defense minister Joschka Fischer told the European Parliament, that a “United States of Europe the only way to preserve European influence in the world” and that “future integration steps need a political union” (euobserver.com, January12, 2011). In New York, an official with Citigroup, the largest financial services firm in the world, said that “the eurozone is likely to fall apart unless the European Union’s member states fuse both on the fiscal and political level” (euobserver.com, April 21, 2010). A former Belgian prime minister has written that a federal EU is “the only option” and might consist of a core of the 12 eurozone states using the prestigious title “United States of Europe” surrounded by other more loosely integrated states (euobesrver.com, December 1, 2005). Sc holars have noted that past crises have been the impetus for spurts of European integration; the current debt crisis offers another opportunity for further integration. In light of these developments, it should be remembered that Bible prophecies have long foretold that a short-lived (3½ years) “beast” power of 10 kings (leaders or nations) would emerge in Europe just before the return of Jesus Christ (Daniel 2 and 7; Revelation 17)—and that its sudden appearance would surprise the world (Revelation 13:3). We need to watch and not be surprised!

Food Prices Approaching a Violent Tipping Point? In an article in the UK’s Guardian, author Damian Carrington reviewed recently published research by three Cornell University faculty members suggesting that when food prices reach a specific level, riots and civil unrest are more likely to occur. The researchers estimate that food prices will reach a crucial “tipping point” and be permanently above this threshold within one to two years—a sobering reality that will impact the world (www.guardian.co.uk, August 25, 2011). Bible prophecies warn of widespread hunger and starvation in the end times. Jesus warned that “famine” and fighting within nations would be important si gns that would signify the “beginning of sorrows” at the end of the age (Matthew 24:7-8). The Apostle John wrote that hyperinflation due to a scarcity of resources will eventually result in very small quantities of wheat and barley being sold for an entire day’s wages (Revelation 6:5-6). Jeremiah also prophesied that conditions would get so bad that cannibalism will once again be practiced (Jeremiah 19:9)! Modern research and current events point in the same direction as Bible prophecies!

Hatred for Christianity Among Muslim Extremists. Sheikh Adel Shehato was imprisoned in Egypt in 1991 and released following the Egyptian uprising earlier this year. He is a senior official in the Egyptian Jihad and his fame and influence are growing in Egypt. In a recent interview, he shared his extremist views about Christianity. When asked whether he was against blowing up churches, the sheikh responded, “Yes and no. The Christian is free to worship his God in his church, but if the Christians make problems for the Muslims, I will exterminate them. I am guided by the Shariah, and it stipulates that they must pay the jizya tax [tax on certain non-Muslims ] while in a state of humiliation.” When the interviewer expressed fear at his views, the s heikh responded, “I will not act [in ways] that contradict my faith just in order to please the people. … We say to the Christians, convert to Islam or pay the jizya, otherwise we will fight you. The Shariah is not based on logic but on divine law. That is why we oppose universal, manmade constitutions” (www.MEMRI.org, August 29, 2011). There has been a visible rise in Islamic extremism across the Middle East and North Africa in recent years. The Bible clearly indicates that at the end of the age, a religio-political King of the South will “attack” the European King of the North. This King of the North will prevail and ultimately overthrow many countries, including Egypt (Daniel 11:40-43). We appear to be watching events that God will use to fulfill His prophecies.—Joe Brown, Ben Whitfield, Scott Winnail
