The World Ahead Weekly Update 3/2

Greetings from Charlotte –

School shootings and stabbings again made news this week in America, while deadly tornadoes hit the nation’s mid-section. On the world scene, one newsletter commented that “the mostly peaceful Arab Spring is now turning into a mostly violent Arab Winter” that international organizations like the U.N. are powerless to control. Bible prophecies, that “in the last days perilous times will come” (2 Timothy 3:1), are certainly coming true! Here in Charlotte, Mr. Meredith has finished a TW article and a script for a new television program that he will tape tomorrow. Mr. Ames and Mr. King also taped new Tomorrow’s World programs today. Mr. Wayne Pyle reports that last weekend’s Tomorrow’s World program by Mr. Meredith entitled “Restoring Original Christianity” should draw about 3,900 responses. Mr. Ron Poole reports that the follow-up TWSP i n Braselton, Georgia, was attended by 24 visitors (see below). Mr. Mario Hernandez will be meeting with brethren in Lisbon, Portugal this Sabbath.—DSW

Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation

Braselton, Georgia:On Sunday afternoon, February 26, the follow-up presentation, “Where Is the Church Christ Built?” was held in Braselton, GA. There were 24 visitors present, eight attending for the first time and 16 who had attended the presentation given the week before. Twenty-five brethren arrived early to set up and transform the hall into a very inviting atmosphere for the guests, all of whom had very encouraging comments in support of how valuable the Tomorrow’s World is in all its media forms. On the Sabbath there were three from the first presentation present for services and additional ones at the presentation strongly indicated that they want to attend.—Ron Poole

Joplin Family Weekend: On Presidents Day weekend, February 18-19, the Joplin congregation hosted members from a number of other areas for a family weekend. There were 241 who attended the morning Bible Study given by Mr. Gene Hilgenberg and 288 who attended the afternoon service at which the sermon was given by Mr. Ames. Besides the teaching from God’s Word, highlights from the weekend included an international-themed dinner after services, an evening dance, a Bible Study for children, a video presentation on the Feast in Costa Rica, free food, nice motel rooms for $30, the world’s most fabulous swing, pictures in front of the hand-crafted tapestry, and of course, the “Amazing Race.” Ask your friends—you will want to come next year!—Karl Beyersdorfer

The Church of God History Project… Calling on LCG Youth Participation! (follow-up announcement)

Go to www.lcg.org/historyproject to learn how you can win a LYC Teen, Pre-Teen or Adventure Camp Scholarship and a $100 gift certificate! Get assistance from your parents and your local pastor, and interview an older, long-time LCG member in your local congregation. The person you interview should give a brief account of how God called him or her into the Truth. Record this interview on a smart phone or video camera (three-to-five-minutes max). You should not record yourself. These videos will be compiled, edited and used in various Church media. Participation is optional, of course, but we hope that at least a few people from each congregation will want to participate in this project.

Deadline for submitting these videos is April 20. Prizes will be awarded to the youth, and we will select four first place submissions and four runner-up submissions. For more details, please visit www.lcg.org/historyproject.—Wyatt Ciesielka and Sheldon Monson

LYC – Adventure Camp – Glacier Park, Montana – 2012

The Adventure Camp program in Glacier Park, Montana is at, or near, capacity. The response has been outstanding! If anyone has not yet registered for this camp and would still like to do so, the deadline for applications has been moved up to Monday, March 12. All acceptance letters will be mailed out by Friday, March 16—so that those who are accepted can plan ahead for this trip. This will be a trip of a lifetime. We will spend five days backpacking in the Rockies, and follow it up with whitewater rafting, and one more activity that is yet to be determined. More details to come in mid-March.

Teen Bible Studies—Resume in March

Weekly Teen Bible Studies will resume this coming Sunday evening. The chat room will be open at 6:30 p.m. Bible Study is from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The chat room is open for one half hour before and after the study.

This year over a dozen ministers will be presenting studies on a variety of Bible personalities. Each week we will announce in the weekly update the presenter and the topic to be presented. This Sunday evening Mr. Sheldon Monson will be giving the study entitled: “Joshua: A bold servant of God.”

Living Youth Website

We’re also happy to be able to announce the launch of our newly revised youth website at http://www.livingyouth.org. There you will findreports, videos and photographs of all of the youth camps that were held last year and information on the youth camps that will be held this year. This website should be your one-stop-shop for information about events and activities in the Church’s Youth Program. The new Bible Studies will be conducted live here, and we will also post recordings of the Bible Studies for those who aren’t able to be there. All that is needed to access the live Bible Studies is a web browser that supports Adobe Flash.

Living Youth Camp Pastoral Evaluations (not to be announced)

One of the steps in the LYC registration process is that we send a “Pastoral Evaluation” to the pastor of each camper and staff member applying for camp. These evaluations are very important because they allow us to learn more about the applicant, and to put each one into a position at camp that is most appropriate for him or her. We understand that all of you pastors are very busy, but if you can return an evaluation promptly when you receive one, it is very helpful to us. They should each take only a couple of minutes. We are not able to accept a camper or staff member to camp until the evaluation is received, so we greatly appreciate your assistance. Thank you!

Feast of Tabernacles 2012

Half of all LCG brethren registered!

Less than two weeks into registration, we have now come to the half-way mark of Living Church of God brethren registered for the Feast. As of today, 4,556 brethren are successfully registered for the Feast, which comes out to 50% of our attendance last year of 9,029. This is a reminder for all brethren—if you have not yet registered, there is still room at most United States and International sites. If you have any difficulty, contact your Festival Advisor or your Pastor. Activity Registration will open June 24, 2012.—Festival Office

The Feast site in Bay of Islands, New Zealand is closed to further transfers.

Attention all FOT Costa Rican travelers! In order to make your travel from the international airport in San Jose (SJO) to Punta Leona go more smoothly, we will need your flight information. Elder Jorge Schaubeck plans to have buses ready at the airport for those brethren who decide to travel by bus, but we will need your travel information. Please e-mail Madeleine Lincoln-Strange at mlincoln@lcg.org or call 704-708-2217 to give her your schedule.—Madeleine Lincoln-Strange

Media

I would like to gladly inform that after some coordinated effort and careful planning with God’s guidance, now the sound doctrine will be preached in the south of Colombia through AM radio. Beginning March 10, 2012 on Saturdays and Sundays on the radio station Red Sonora AM 1500 transmitting from Cali, we will broadcast the radio program El Mundo de Mañana, 30 minutes on Saturdays and Sundays at a very low cost. We appreciate everyone’s prayers.—Armando Orrego

Comments

The Importance of Prayer: Jesus urged His disciples to “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation” (Matthew 26:41). David and Daniel prayed three times a day (Psalm 55:17; Daniel 6:10). Jesus prayed all night before making a major decision (Luke 6:12-13) and when He prayed, He prayed earnestly (Luke 22:44). When Jesus’ disciples asked, “Lord, teach us to pray,” He gave an outline of a model prayer (Luke 11:1-4). In this model prayer, the focus at the beginning and at the end of the prayer is on God and His coming Kingdom, and personal requests are sandwiched in between (Matthew 6:9-13). This helps us keep our personal issues in a proper perspective. It is also instructive that Jesus prayed for His disciples who were being called out of this world, but He did not pray for the world, because He knew that God is not trying to save the world now (John 17:8-11). Prayer is an essential tool for us to talk with God and to build a closer relationship with Him, so we can become more like our Father. The Scriptures reveal that our sincere and earnest prayers are like sweet incense to God (Revelation 5:8). This is why the Apostle Paul encouraged Christians to “pray without ceasing”—and we can do the same (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

Have a profitable Sabbath,

News and Prophecy—March 1, 2012

Iran, Israel and War? In early February, Iran touted its newest-generation nuclear centrifuges and increased capacity for producing higher grade uranium (Agence France Presse, February 15, 2012). Now, the U.N.’s nuclear watchdog agency has released its latest report citing Iran for obstructing its investigative work and stating that Iran had not answered questions about possible military aspects of its nuclear programs. However Iran’s envoy to the agency insists that Iran desires to “keep talking” to the IAEA (BBC, February 24, 2012). This week, Israel’s President and Defense Minister held high level meetings in Washington related to the escalating situation in Iran. While the U.S. continues to push for restraint and time to let international sanctions take their toll in Iran, Israel views the situation as a growing threat to its survival (www.salon.com, February 27, 2012). Iran has also threatened pre-emptive strikes should it feel “backed into a corner” (BBC, February 21, 2012). In a recent interview, former U.S. National Security Advisor, Zbigniew Brzezinski, warned that a nuclear Iran would be more predictable than a war started by Israel, because a nuclear Iran would be easy to “isolate” on the world stage. He also noted that a war between Israel and Iran would further destabilize an already unstable region (Deutsche Welle, February 27, 2012). Bible prophecies foretell that prior to the return of Jesus Christ, Jerusalem will be surrounded by armies and trampled by Gentiles, that half the city will go into captivity and that daily sacrifices begun by the Jews will be stopped (Luke 21:20; Zechariah 14:1-2; Daniel 8:11-12). The growing turmoil in the Middle East may prepare the way for these prophesied events. For more information on this topic, review our booklet The Middle East in Prophecy.

Biblical Key to U.S. Relationships: A recent Gallup poll revealed that “Nearly all Americans, a full 96 per cent, have a favourable view of Canada… That’s the loftiest ranking for any foreign country since Gallup began the poll two decades ago… But the survey suggests Canada better keep its eye on the Aussies—Australia is right behind us in second place at 93 per cent. Great Britain is in third at 90 per cent” (www.ca.news.yahoo.com, February 16, 2012). Historically, the U.S. has also had close ties with Israel. The article cites reasons for the “love affair” between the U.S. and Canada, including strong dipl omatic ties, a common border, long-lasting peace, Canada’s strong economy, and many joint ventures—including being comrades-in-arms in conflicts around the globe. But there are biblical reasons for these close relationships. What few realize today is that the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and even Israel are literally “brothers” of common parents. The Bible reveals that the sons of Joseph, Ephraim and Manasseh, were to become a great nation and a company of nations—the U.S. and the British-descended people. Jews in Israel today are descended from the Israelite tribe of Judah—which makes these people also “brothers.” Thus, the modern relationships between these nations are not unique, nor are they new. The biblical identities of these modern nations provide important insights into end-time Bible prophecies aimed at the “houses” of Israel and Judah. For more information on this fascinating su bject, see our booklet The United States and Great Britain in Prophecy.

Deadly Tornadoes Hit U.S. Midwest: This week some 16 tornadoes spawned by a powerful storm system tore through parts of Kansas, Illinois and Missouri, killing and injuring dozens of people. The resort town of Branson, Missouri, was hard hit with hotels and theaters losing roofs, having windows shattered and losing power. Branson is about 100 miles southeast of Joplin, Missouri, which was “devastated by a monstrous twister last May that killed 161 people” (onenewsnow.com, Feb.29, 2012). Several small communities in the region were literally leveled. Alabama reported that in January, 95 tornadoes struck the state—before the tornado season even officially began in March! Today, few make any connection between these weather-related disasters and what is going on in our nations—the acceptance and promot ion of homosexuality, pornography, rampant divorce, abortion, etc. However, the Bible clearly states that God will bring “disaster upon disaster” upon His disobedient people because they have turned their backs on Him and ignored His laws (Ezekiel 1-7). Unless the Israelite people repent and change, these disasters will only increase—see our booklet Who Controls the Weather?—Scott Winnail

The World Ahead Weekly Update 2/24

Greetings from Charlotte –

We are certainly living in dynamic times! The European financial crisis has opened old wounds and prejudices that are challenging the continent’s plans for closer unity. The Arab Spring revolutions have put the Middle East into a period of “constructive chaos” that begs for a leader to step into the vacuum, and America continues its moral decline. Here in Charlotte, Mr. Meredith has held meetings and is formulating his next television script. Mr. and Mrs. Ames have returned from a profitable Church visit in Joplin, Missouri. Mr. Wayne Pyle reports that we received almost 4,000 responses to last weekend’s Tomorrow’s World program by Mr. Wallace Smith, entitled “Why Believe In God?,” and that the visit to the National Religious Broadcasters convention was very profitable (see below). My visits with the Braselton and Atlanta, Georgia, congregations last weeken d were very encouraging, and we had 46 visitors for the TWSP in Braselton. Mr. Ron Poole will make a follow-up presentation this coming weekend. Mr. Mario Hernandez left yesterday for visits with brethren and congregations in Europe. Mr. Armando Orrego, South America Area Pastor, also made recent visits to congregations in Peru (see below). Your continued prayers for all these activities are important and appreciated.—DSW

Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation

Braselton, Georgia: Last Sunday, February 19, 46 first-time visitors along with 25 excited brethren attended the TWSP given by Dr. Douglas Winnail, titled “The Gathering Storm.” The guests had a wide variety of backgrounds in their contact with the Truth; all were very open to conversation and visibly and audibly engaged in attention to the presentation. Dr. Winnail posed some questions and comments during the delivery that received very quick responses from the visitors that reflected a level of understanding of the Truth they have gained from our telecasts and publications. Many indicated that they plan to attend the follow up presentation next Sunday, February 26, on “Where Is the Church Christ Built?” while some indicated they plan to attend services next Sabbath.—Ron Poole

Spanish Update

New Websites: Today is a great day for God’s Work in the Spanish language! Two new Spanish websites are now online! The main site www.MundoManana.org has been redesigned from scratch and it now uses a design similar to the current English website www.TomorrowsWorld.org. This new tool should greatly help the growth of the Work among the Spanish-speaking nations. Because the Work in Spanish has been active for many years, the content of this website is quite rich, with 12 booklets, 120 radio broadcasts andseveraltelecasts, 32 issues of the magazine El Mundo de Mañana and 360 Noticias y Profecía (News and Prophecy). In addition, an interactive version of the Bible Study Course is available for the first time! It is hosted on a separate website, www.curso-biblia.org.

In 2011, the Spanish website recorded an average of 5,600 visits per month. As the new site is optimized for “organic” search (indexing in Google, Bing and other search engines), we can reasonably expect to double the audience of the Spanish website in 2012.—VG Lardé

Visit to Peru: On February 10, Mr. Armando Orrego arrived in Lima for a scheduled visit. We had a Bible Study on Sabbath morning, the next day, and the holy convocation in the afternoon. Mr. Orrego counseled several members and persons interested in attending the Church. He held a meeting with the leading men in Peru and also made some arrangements for the Feast. On Sunday afternoon, we had a meeting on how to utilize the Internet to improve our communication. We look forward to more of his visits.—Eden Hurtado

Living Youth Programs

Announcing the Church of God History Project… Calling on LCG Youth Participation!

An opportunity to share stories about coming into the Truth, a great way to honor our older membership, an opportunity to let our lights shine… and, a way to win a LYC Teen, Pre-Teen or Adventure Camp Scholarship and a $100 gift certificate!

We all know that Scripture tells us that God wants us to love and learn from our elders, and in every local Living Church of God congregation there are wonderful stories of how God has called men and women into the Truth. Many congregations are blessed to have more than a few faithful “long-time” members, some whom God called into the Church three, four or five decades ago! We love these faithful long-time members. Their stories are inspiring, and we can learn from them. With this in mind, we would like to launch an exciting “Church of God History Project” and tap into the talents and enthusiasm of our Church youth. With the help and guidance of the local pastors, we would like to ask our youth (pre-teens as well as teens) to interview older, long-time LCG members in their local congregations, and record a three-to-five-minute (five minutes max.) video of that person giving a brief account of how God called him or her i nto the Truth. These videos will be compiled, edited and used in various Church media. We realize that many people will not want to be interviewed, but we hope that at least a few people from each congregation will be willing to participate in this project.

Anyone who is interested in participating should go to www.lcg.org/historyproject for more information. This Web page will be updated over the next few days with additional instructions and contest rules. This is also the Web page where the photo/video waiver form may be downloaded, and where the videos will be uploaded. And please note, you do not need to have expensive video equipment to participate! Smart phones or digital cameras may be used to record these short video clips. These videos could be recorded after Sabbath services, in individual’s homes, or even before or after dinner at the upcoming Night to be Much Observed. We would like the youth to only film the interviewee. (In other words, the youth should not film themselves and should not introduce the interviewee.) The interviewee should begin by greeting the audience, stating his or her first name, and then briefly recount when and how he came into God’s Church.

Deadline for submitting these videos is April 20. We will select four first place submissions, with prizes being awarded to the youth. First place prizes will be awarded to one boy and one girl from North America and Europe, and one boy and one girl from our other International congregations. Both first place prize winners from North America and Europe will receive a FREE camp scholarship (Adventure Camp, Pre-Teen or Teen) and a $100 gift certificate to a well-known sports, athletic and camping retailer. Both first place winners from our other International congregations will receive a $200 gift certificate. (We understand that travel costs may prevent youth outside of North America or Europe from attending one of our camps, even if we provided the tuition scholarship.) We will also select four runner-up submissions (two from North America and Europe and two from other International congregations) who will receive $25 gift certificates. Please visit this week www.lcg.org/historyproject for more details. —Wyatt Ciesielka and Sheldon Monson

Feast of Tabernacles 2012

Registration Well Underway!

As of today, four days into registration, 42% of LCG brethren (3,779) are now successfully registered for the Feast of Tabernacles. Thank you, brethren, for registering! This greatly helps our coordinators plan for this year’s Feast. Don’t forget, if you change your mind and want to register for a different Feast site, feel free to do so. Just go back through the registration process and re-register to the site of your choice. If you have not yet registered, please do so. If you have any difficulty, contact your Festival Advisor or your Pastor. Activity Registration will open June 24, 2012.—Festival Office

Mr. Gerald Weston and I had a most informative and profitable experience once again at the National Religious Broadcasters Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. The contacts and networking are very valuable for God’s Church and our future media growth. We even received helpful information for spot ads for our telecast in Australia and North America. I also dined with a vice-president of a new TV network in the U.S. I’ve known the VP for several years now, and I now know how much he absolutely loves our Tomorrow’s World programming, and he is willing to give us an exceptionally good deal to air on his network. I’ll be presenting the information to Dr. Meredith and Mr. Ames for their decision-making.—Wayne Pyle

Comments

The Value of Counsel: One of the common pitfalls of life is trusting in our own judgment when we only see part of a picture. When we make decisions or take actions based on how we see a problem, the results can be costly to ourselves and others. This is why Solomon wrote in Proverbs 3:5, “lean not on your own understanding” and in Proverbs 3:7, “Do not be wise in your own eyes” and again in Proverbs 28:26, “He who trusts in his own heart is a fool.” Solomon also warned in Proverbs 14:12, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” To help us avoid making serious mistakes in life, God inspired Solomon to write in Proverbs 11:14, “Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety” and again in Proverbs 15:22, “Without counsel, plans go awry, but in the multitude of counsel ors they are established.” We can obtain wise and valuable advice by prayerfully studying the book of Proverbs and by seeking counsel from parents, the ministry and from more experienced friends and associates who can be objective and help us see a bigger picture than we perceive on our own.

Have a profitable Sabbath,

News and Prophecy—February 23, 2012

War Against Christians in the Middle East. Newsweek magazine recently reported that “Terrorist attacks on Christians in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia increased 309% from 2003 to 2010.” The article described how Christians in the Middle East are being attacked and suffering for their religious views. The author’s rhetoric is more alarming than one would expect from the mainstream press. “Christians are being killed in the Islamic world because of their religion. It is a rising genocide that ought to provoke global alarm… [it is] the conspiracy of silence… Nothing less than the fate of Christianity—and ultimately of all religious minorities—in the Islamic world is at stake… It is a spontaneous expression of anti-Christian animus by Muslims that transcends cultures, regions and ethnicities” (Newsweek, February 13, 2012). The Bible reveals that Satan’s society at the end of the age will hate followers of Jesus Christ (Matthew 24:9). In fact, Jesus said the world would hate His disciples, because they are of Him (John 17:14). The prophet Daniel reveals that in the last days, a predominantly Muslim King of the South will “push against” a predominantly “Christian” King of the North but will be overcome by the King of the North (see Daniel 11). The recent surge in violence and intolerance against Christians could be one of the ways the King of the South will attempt to “push against” the North. This aggression against Christians in the Middle East will likely generate a backlash from the future Catholic European Beast Power. For more information on this long-prophesied confrontation, please review our booklet, The Beast of Revelation.

Will Britain Really Store Its Tanks in Germany? What started out as a joking comment has now become a very real possibility. In order to manage its growing national debt, Britain’s Ministry of Defense (MoD) is looking to sell its vast military vehicle storage facility at Ashchurch. The facility houses more than 6,000 defense-ready vehicles, including hundreds of high-tech tanks. Some MoD decision-makers are seriously considering moving large portions of the machinery to a British military base in Germany for temporary storage, while a more suitable long-term storage location within Britain is identified (The Guardian, February 16, 2012). Philosopher George Santayana made the sobering observation, “Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” Less than 70 years ago, Hitler’s Panzer tanks were rollin g over British troops in France. Now, Britain is considering storing its tanks in Germany—modern Assyria. Bible prophecy reveals that a German-led Beast power will eventually subjugate the Israelite-descended people, including Britain (Deuteronomy 28:25-26, 36-41; Ezekiel 23:12, 22-26). Bible prophecy refers to Ephraim (modern Britain) as a “silly dove without sense,” because “they call to Egypt, they go to Assyria” (Hosea 7:11). Watching these events transpire is sobering and helps highlight just how accurate Bible prophecy really is. For more information on the identity of the British-descended peoples in Bible prophecy, review our booklet The United States and Great Britain in Prophecy.

Dangerous Super Bacteria! Due to the overuse of antibiotics, bacteria are growing more resilient and more deadly. According to an article in The Independent, “Britain is facing a ‘massive’ rise in antibiotic-resistant blood poisoning caused by the bacterium E.coli—bringing closer the spectre of diseases that are impossible to treat. Experts say the growth of antibiotic resistance now poses as great a threat to global health as the emergence of new diseases such as AIDS and pandemic flu.” These infections are now spreading around the globe. Experts note that the growth of these resistant bacteria threatens “to turn common infections into untreatable diseases” and medical professionals are now seeing infections that are resistant to powerful “last line of defense” antibiotics. Experts fear E.coli’s resistance because, unlike other bacteria that are not very prevalent, E.coli naturally exists within the gut of all humans (The Independent, February 20, 2012). Jesus warned that one of the “signs” of the end of the age would be pestilence (Luke 21:11). Antibiotic-resistant bacteria, given the right conditions, will produce widespread disease epidemics. This world needs the return of Christ and His Kingdom where there will be no more death or sorrow or pain (Revelation 21:4). And that time is coming soon!—Scott Winnail, Henry Cooper, Susan Bennett

This week Dr. Meredith added a new TV station in Denver, Colorado—KCDO-TV, channel 3 (or 23 on some systems). KCDO-TV will begin broadcasting the Tomorrow’s World television program on Sunday, March 4, at 8:00 am. This station reaches 1.1 million TV households. This is the Church’s first commercial-grade TV station in Denver, and we hope everyone in the Denver area will earnestly pray for its success in reaching viewers and moving them to respond.—Wayne Pyle

Tomorrow’s World Hong Kong

2011 was truly an exciting year for the Work in Hong Kong. On June 4 the first program of Tomorrow’s World Hong Kong edition aired on HKTVB Pearl. A total of 2,351 responses came in over 31 weeks for an average response of 76 per program. The highest response totals to date have come from a two-part series on the Seven Laws of Success, with program 1 receiving 135 responses and the second installment receiving a record 161! With construction completed on a television studio at the Mississauga, Ontario, office, we have filmed 5 new programs, including a series on how the birthright blessings have impacted Hong Kong.

On a recent trip to Hong Kong, Mr. Gerald Weston, Mr. Jonathan Riley (Canadian Office Manager) and I were able to visit several publishers to explore the possibilities of having booklets printed containing both English and Chinese versions of the text. We were also able to meet with several contacts there and made progress toward setting up a registered charity and opening a bank account. Please pray that God will continue to lead us through this door and that we will be able to get physical copies of Church literature into the hands of viewers.—Mike Heykoop

New Radio Station in Colombia

God opened a door in Medellin for proclaiming the Gospel on the radio station Ondas de la Montaña AM 1350. We began broadcasting on Sabbath February 11 at 8:30 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. This station has a potential audience of 4.5 million people in the metro area of Medellin and nearby cities.—Armando Orrego

Are You Easily Entreated? The Apostle James describes a Christian using God’s Spirit as “easy to be entreated” (James 3:17-KJV) or “willing to yield to reason” (Amplified) or “reasonable” (NASV). Such a person will not be so convinced that his or her own opinions or actions are right and that advice and counsel from others is ignored. Solomon made a similar observation that “the way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but he who heeds counsel is wise” (Proverbs 12:15). Solomon also repeatedly stressed the value of being receptive to counsel (Proverbs 19:20, 27; 22:17) and he repeatedly warned of the serious consequences that result from ignoring advice (Proverbs 8:36; 29:1). A truly humble and converted Christian will not overestimate the value of his or her own opinions or actions, but will have a teachable attitude (like David’s attitude in Psalm 25:4 ) that is open to instructions, suggestions and correction. Real Christians are easily entreated!

Have a profitable Sabbath,

News and Prophecy—February 16, 2012

Sobering Situation in Greece. Since 2009, 25% of Greek businesses have ceased operation, “and half of all small businesses in the country say they are unable to meet payroll.” In addition, “the suicide rate increased by 40 percent in the first half of 2011.” On a recent visit to Greece a journalist observed, “It’s not uncommon to see decently dressed Greeks discreetly rummaging through garbage bins for food. A new book about how the country survived the Nazi occupation—“Starvation Recipes”—has become a surprise hit.” As Greek austerity measures increase, pensions and minimum wage decrease, tax rates rise, and personal budgets contract (New York Times, February 13, 2012). The EU pushes for greater control of Greek finances and many view this as a direct attack on Greek sovereignty. But are Greece’s financial woes unique? Portugal has already experienced one EU bailout. Italy may follow suit. Many around the globe are coming to realize that the lavish “Western” lifestyles that so many have grown accustomed to in the last few decades are not guaranteed to last forever. Bible prophecy reveals that due to the rejection of God and His laws, the Israelite nations will experience a similar cycle of poverty and want in the not-too-distant future. Moses foretold, “A nation whom you have not known shall eat the fruit of your land and the produce of your labor, and you shall be only oppressed and crushed continually” (Deuteronomy 28:33). Jeremiah warned, “they shall eat up your harvest and your bread, which your sons and daughters should eat” (Jeremiah 5:17). Serious financial difficulties will spread beyond Southern Europe! For information on the sobering times ahead, see our free booklet, The United States and Great Brita in in Prophecy.

Air Force Removes God. The U.S. Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office recently removed God from its logo as a result of protests from the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers. Jason Torpy, president of the association, said the word “God” had no place in the logo because not all members of the military are religious. “We just hope (the Air Force) can provide more equal opportunities for atheists and humanists in the military.” The Rapid Capabilities Office [RCO] logo previously included the motto “Opus Dei Cum Pecunia Alienum Efficemus” —Doing God’s Work with Other People’s Money—as an inside joke among RCO members. Caucus members say it was changed to “Miraculi Cum Pecunia Alienum Efficemus” —Doing Miracles with Other People’s Money (Huffington Post, February 8, 2012). Jesus Christ warned, in Matthew 10:33, “But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.” When nations turn their backs on God, it leads to terrible consequences for their militaries—defeat at the hands of their enemies (Leviticus 26:17; Deuteronomy 28:25). The recent action by the Air Force is just one example of this nation denying God. These actions will result in dire consequences in the near future for the U.S. and its military. For more information on what’s ahead for the U.S. and Britain, review our booklet The United States and Great Britain in Prophecy.

Deadly Prison Fire in Honduras. Tuesday night, a fire burned an overcrowded prison outside the capitol, Tegucigalpa. The 900-bed prison was operating at nearly double capacity. The cause of the fire is unclear; however one possible source is an inmate who set himself on fire intending to kill everyone. On Wednesday, 357 prisoners were missing and over 250 were dead, with many others believed to have escaped into the countryside. Most of Honduras’ 24 prisons operate far above capacity. “The appalling living conditions are a cause of the frequent riots which break out across the region, and a source of frustration for exasperated relatives” (Agence France-Presse, February 16, 2012). This prison fire and its results are tragic! But they highlight how man’s justice system is ineffec tive and inhumane. The ways of man may seem right to him, but ultimately lead to death (Proverbs 14:12). Today, many families fail to train up a child in God’s Way, and society ultimately winds up “caging” the rebellious adults in wretched conditions. In God’s Kingdom, things will be very different. Children will grow up in families where both parents are present and prepared to teach children God’s Way of life (Deuteronomy 4:8-10; Proverbs 22:6). When children are raised God’s way and His laws permeate the land (Isaiah 2:2-4), prisons and their problems will become relics of history. The World Ahead Weekly Update 2/11

Greetings from Charlotte -

Western so-called “Christian” nations are certainly under siege from anti-Christian forces. Numerous attempts are underway to promote the acceptance of Islamic Sharia law in Western Europe, Britain and America. Atheists want any reference to God eliminated in the public sphere, and homosexual activists are making ever more bold efforts to flaunt and promote their perverted lifestyle in the media, in schools and through legislative and judicial means. Adversaries are increasing and Sodom and Gomorrah are rising again from the ashes of the past—as Bible prophecies have long indicated—because our nations have turned away from God (see Deuteronomy 28:15-47; Isaiah 1:1-10).

Here in Charlotte, Mr. Meredith has been writing and spoke to the office staff about the importance of our mission and the need to be able to adjust to changes that occur. His Tomorrow’s World telecast last weekend is expected to draw more than 4,200 responses. Dr. Scott Winnail reports that last weekend 27 visitors attended the follow-up Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation in Mandeville, Jamaica, entitled “Where Is God’s Church Today?” Mr. Ed Breaux presented a TWSP in Columbus, Mississippi, entitled “The Gathering Storm,” that was attended by 20 first-time visitors (see report below). On my most recent trip to Europe, I was able to spend Sabbaths with brethren in Geneva, Switzerland and Weert, Netherlands. In spite of train strikes, snow and very cold weather, Mr. Rod King and I were also able to conduct a short and profitable conference in Belgium with our French-speaking ministers. Please keep our scattered brethren, and those looking to God for His intervention, in your prayers.—DSW

Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation

Columbus, Mississippi: On the Sabbath of February 4, 39 people gathered at the Fairfield Inn in Columbus to hear Mr. Ed Breaux’s presentation titled, “The Gathering Storm.” Of those who attended, 20 were first-time visitors and 19 were members of the Columbus congregation, along with visitors from the Jackson, Laurel, Gulf Port, Mississippi; and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, congregations. The visitors commented how much they enjoyed the presentation and how logical information was presented. Twelve of the guests asked about attending services next Sabbath before the follow-up presentation.

That morning at Sabbath services, the congregation was excited to watch as Mr. Ed Breaux and Mr. Evo Walker ordained Mr. Jim Burson to the office of elder. Mr. Jim Burson, a long-time deacon in the Columbus congregation, was ordained to help serve the brethren in the Columbus and Jackson areas.

Costa Rica Update

We had initially announced that our new Feast site in Costa Rica would be a bilingual Spanish-English site. Due to the high interest in this site from English-speaking transfers, we have decided to make it an all-English site, meaning that services during the Feast will be conducted each day in English, while simultaneous translation is provided into Spanish for those who need it.

Living University

Call for On-Campus Study Applications (U.S. Only)

For those seeking a unique and exciting learning opportunity, Living University is now seeking applicants for a limited number of on-campus students to study full-time in Charlotte, beginning in the fall of 2012. We hope to have several new, male or female, students with us beginning in August! Applications can be initiated online through the University’s website, www.livinguniv.com. Additional details and requirements can also be found online, plus the estimated costs associated with on-campus study. We plan to have housing available for on-campus students this fall.

Work Study Opportunities Available

With our on-campus students, we are also looking for individuals who have skills they can use to contribute to the Work or University through part-time work. We have work study opportunities available in several areas, but are in greatest need of students with skills and interest in the areas of writing and editorial, Web graphic arts and online layout, and also in “Web content” design. If you are interested in on-campus LU study and also have interests and/or skills in these or other areas, please contact us as soon as possible. At this time we can only accept on campus students from the U.S. Our hope is to expand this opportunity to international students in future years. Because space is limited, students interested should plan to have their applications completed and submitted as soon as possible. Those with no previous college will need to submit college entrance test scores (GRE or SAT) along with the application. You can fin d out more about these exams through a local High School guidance office or local college testing service. If you have questions about on-campus study or to find out more, please call or e-mail Dr. Scott Winnail at 704-708-2292 or swinnail@livinguniv.com.

Working Together: Jesus referred to His disciples as His “friends” and encouraged them to “love one another” (John 15:12-17). The Apostle Paul referred to those who assisted him in his ministry as “my fellow workers” (Romans 16:3) and “fellow workers for the kingdom of God” (Colossians 4:11). He referred to members of God’s Church as “God’s fellow workers” (1 Corinthians 3:9) and “workers together [co-workers] with Him” (2 Corinthians 6:1). To work together with others doing God’s work is a unique and exciting opportunity that carries a big responsibility! The Scriptures provide important guidelines about how to work together. We are instructed to “be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment” and not let contentions divide us (1 Corinthians 1:10-13). We are also advise d to get along and live in harmony, to avoid being haughty and conceited or ambitious for a position, and to be humble and work together peacefully (Romans 12:16-18). If we can learn to really “love one another” and treat each other as “friends” we will be more effective “fellow workers for the kingdom of God.”

News and Prophecy—February 9, 2012

Crisis in Capitalism. In an ongoing series of articles, The Financial Times of London has focused on the demise of capitalism—the economic engine behind Western economies. The articles have noted a “crisis of legitimacy” or a “crisis of confidence” in the long-touted system, due mainly to the financial chaos wreaking havoc on world financial markets. The current crisis gives rise to the big question, “Will capitalism continue or will it be replaced?” Bible prophecies provide a glimpse into the future. Revelation 18 reveals that a Babylonian system will arise at the end of the age and make nations and peoples very rich—before it comes crashing down. Nations and merchants of the earth will “mourn” over its destruction because “no one buys their merchandise anymore.&rdquo ; These merchants will eventually “stand at a distance for fear of her torment, weeping and wailing” (vv. 3-15). Ultimately, Jesus Christ will return to the earth and usher in a new economic system based on the laws of God, tithing and the way of give (Isaiah 2:3-4). Those who will not work will not eat (2 Thessalonians 3:10), but the righteous shall never go hungry (Isaiah 49:10; Revelation 7:16). God will not use man’s “isms” (capitalism, communism, socialism, or the like) in His perfect government. Jesus Christ will teach the peoples of the world the only way that leads to peace—a way that is far above the wisdom of man (1 Corinthians 1:20-21).

Germany’s Growing Influence. Angela Merkel stated “Time is of the essence,” in appealing to Israelis and Palestinians to push forward in their peace process. On a recent trip to Europe, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas traveled to Berlin to update leaders on current peace developments with Israel. “Abbas thanked the German government for its support, both on a material and political level. The country had helped in the building of Palestinian state institutions and was also in a position to be helpful in the peace process, enjoying good relations with both sides. ‘The fact that Germany is a good friend of Israel does not bother us, because Germany is also a good friend of the Palestinians,’ Abbas emphasized. Palestinians understood the historical reasons for Germany’s support of Israel, said Abba s, and they respected them” (Deutsche Welle, January 20, 2012). Germany feels responsible for the Holocaust and it has made it a priority to keep good relations with Israel while also giving economic and political support to the neighboring Palestinians. God inspired Daniel to write about a coming time when a fragile peace would be made in Jerusalem by a northern European leader. This peace will be cut short, when this king of the North is provoked by a king of the South and the king of the North then brings great desolation on Middle East countries aligned with the king of the South (Daniel 9:27; 11:40-41). With Abbas’ recent trip to Europe, it appears Germany will become more involved in the biblically prophesied attempt to bring “peace” in the Holy Land. For more information about these exciting prophetic events, request our free booklet Fourteen Signs Announcing Christ’s Return.

A Lack of Vision. A major reason the Allied Powers defeated Nazi Germany in WWII was that the U.S. military-industrial complex vastly out-produced Germany. Allied forces recently defeated the Gadhafi regime in Libya because of U.S. weapon supplies. However, the U.S. is now outsourcing military production and beginning to pay the price. Early in the Iraq War, the U.S. ran short of precision-guided bombs and could not produce replacements fast enough because a Swiss company, responsible for a critical part, refused to sell the part because it did not support U.S. actions in Iraq. In 2010, the U.S. purchased 59,000 computer chips for high-tech weaponry, and the chips turned out to be counterfeit. The U.S. is phasing out its ship-building facilities, while China now produces 97% of new ships built (SaturdayEveningPost.com, January-February 2012). This does not bode well for the future of the U.S. military. The Bible has long noted, “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (Proverbs 29:18, KJV). Regrettably, many of today’s leaders lack vision and are motivated by short-term thinking. They are focused on reducing costs and do not consider long-term consequences and lessons of history. Ultimately, this lack of vision will play into the hands of enemies and bring national captivity (Deuteronomy 28:25, 36-37). We are watching the beginning of this cycle now in the Israelite-descended nations of America and Britain.—Scott Winnail and Justin Ridgeway

The World Ahead Weekly Update 2/4

Greetings from Charlotte –

Twenty-five European leaders agreed this week to a new—some say “historic”—pact to attempt to move them closer than ever to real fiscal union. Only time will tell how dramatically the steps we are witnessing now will lead to the rise of a new and powerful leader in Europe. Prophecy marches on!

Back home in Charlotte, it’s been another busy week. Dr. Roderick C. Meredith held an office-wide staff meeting on Thursday, exhorting us to be “good soldiers of Jesus Christ” (2 Timothy 2:3) and emphasizing that leaders focus on making a contribution, and take responsibility for results. This week also marked the inauguration of the first issue of the French Tomorrow’s World (Le Monde de Demain) magazine, at the present in an electronic-only version that will be published on www.MondeDemain.org in the coming days. At a special reception at the office, Dr. Meredith and Mr. Mario Hernandez paid tribute to Mr. Dibar Apartian’s five-decades-long toil in the Work of God in French-speaking areas, laying the ground-work for the doors that are opening today.

Please remember Dr. Douglas Winnail’s European travels in your prayers. Rail strikes made several of his trains miss scheduled connections earlier this week, but thankfully did not derail his plans drastically. He’s been conducting business and meeting with brethren in Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, and will hold meetings with our European ministers early next week before returning home.—RMc

Healing

I would like to report about an outstanding intervention by God to heal the husband of one of our members in the Cape Town, South Africa, congregation. Last Wednesday evening, January 25, Mrs. Bettie Feyt called to ask for prayer for her husband, Lourens, who had been admitted to a hospital with a severely bleeding ulcer and kidney failure. He had coughed up two liters of blood, and was in a very weakened state. I anointed a cloth and asked the office to send out SMS messages to the members to pray for him. I called Mrs. Feyt on Thursday morning, and she said that her husband was in the hospital being examined, but she had no further news about him at that stage. I called her on Friday morning again, and found her absolutely elated, as she explained that a miracle had occurred. On examining her husband’s stomach with a camera scope, the doctors had found no trace whatsoever of any ulcer, or bleeding, or internal damage of any k ind! His stomach was perfectly normal. His kidneys were improving, and his blood count was returning to normal. He had been completely healed to the amazement of the doctors and the hospital staff! Needless to say, he was allowed to return home again on Friday, where he is now regaining his strength. Both Bettie and Lourens are in their mid-seventies, and are truly grateful, as we all are, for God’s loving intervention.—Pieter van der Byl

Church Survey

This week, all pastors were sent a Church Survey packet. This is a survey conducted from time to time by our Record Information Services Department, in conjunction with the Church Administration Department, to ensure that our membership records are accurate. We are asking our pastors to verify and confirm addresses, phone numbers, baptism dates (if applicable), birthdates and other contact information of all Living Church of God members and attendees. An up-to-date database is vital for many different purposes, such as timely mailings, festival registration, donation receipts, and for accurate demographic information used in planning. Please assist your pastor (or those he delegates this assignment to) by providing your accurate information so we can keep our Master File database up-to-date.

Face-to-Face Time: Researchers studying digital media use among pre-teen girls have found that girls lacking in face-to-face contact with others reported a downturn in overall health. Negative effects included lowered social confidence, disrupted sleep patterns, and having more friends whom their parents perceived as a poor influence (Wall Street Journal, January 31, 2012). On the contrary, “girls reporting high levels of face-to-face communication reported strong social and emotional health even if they were heavy media users.” According to Dr. Clifford Naas, co-author of the study, “The most important message is that face-to-face communication is just enormously important and there has been a dramatic decline in that, among kids and among families.”

Experts are saying what the Bible has taught for centuries: real human interaction among families and among spiritual brethren—not just preteen girls—is crucial! Why is it so important that we attend Sabbath services each week? Yes, to worship God and be obedient to His command to assemble (Hebrews 10:25). Yes, to learn spiritual knowledge (Romans 10:17). But just as important is to bond together as a family with one another and with God (1 John 1:3). The prophet Malachi exhorts us in Malachi 3:16, “Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another, and the Lord listened and heard them; so a book of remembrance was written before Him… ‘They shall be mine,’ says the Lord of hosts, ‘On the day that I make them My jewels. And I will spare them as a man spares his own son who serves him.’” Real fellowship is vital!

Let’s get the most out of every Sabbath—including uplifting, bonding, and inspiring fellowship!

Have a wonderful Sabbath,
Rod McNair

News and Prophecy—February 2, 2012

Ethnic Violence on the Rise in Europe. “The net result of human rights developments in Europe causes great concern… Without concerted government action, the next generation of Europeans may see human rights as an optional extra rather than a core value,” wrote a reporter for the EU Observer. A recent study by Human Rights Watch pins the blame for a recent wave of extreme human rights violations throughout Europe, on “bad leadership by EU governments.” “The report named and shamed nine EU member states—France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain and the UK—as displaying a swing toward right-wing politics… It accused the EU institutions of not doing enough to stop the trend.” Human rights violations have also occurred in recent months against Muslims and Roma/gypsies (EU Observer, January 23, 2012). Christ warned that at the end of the age, ethnic group would rise against ethnic group—“nation will rise against nation” (Matthew 24:6-7). He also predicted through Paul that “perilous times will come” when people will be: “unloving… without self-control, brutal… lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God” (2 Timothy 3:1-4). Very few realize that all of mankind is made in God’s image (Genesis 1:26), with the potential to become members of the family of God one day (John 3:16; 2 Peter 3:9; 1 John 3:2). Until Christ returns and all minds are opened to understand this fact, ethnic violence will sadly remain—it is the way of Satan’s world! For more information on the motivation behind today’s society, read our booklet Who or What Is The Antichrist?

The UK’s Integrity Crisis. “The portrait of a nation increasingly relaxed about ‘low-level dishonesty’ emerges in a major study” conducted by the University of Essex. The report “suggests that the ‘integrity problem’ is likely to get worse because young people are more tolerant of dishonest behaviour than the older generation.” According to the study, “… in 2000, 70 per cent of people believed an extramarital affair could never be justified; today, the proportion is about 50 per cent. The proportion of people who say picking up money found in the street is never justified fell from 40 per cent to 20 per cent. Lying and breaking the speed limit have also become an accepted part of life.” The report highlights the generation gap’s effect on integrity, “… younger people are far more likely to tolerate dishonesty. Only 33 per cent of under-25s think lying on a job application is never justified, compared with 41 per cent of middle-aged people and 55 per cent of those over 65” (The Independent, January 25, 2012). The Bible prophesies of an integrity crisis at the end of the age, “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness… and take away justice from the righteous man!” (Isaiah 5:20-23). It is God’s Ten Commandments that provide the moral foundation upon which society must base its values. As that code is buried deeper in the pages of history and replaced by the “situation ethics” of a post-modern era (Judges 17:6), we should expect, and not be surprised by, an unethical pandemic!

Too Many Hungry Pythons. Burmese pythons were introduced into the Florida Everglades in the 1980s. They escaped from captivity and pet owners also dump them when they become too large to keep. The pythons are prolific and can grow to more than 15 feet long (5 meters) and weigh 150 pounds (75 kg). A new Davidson College study reveals rapidly declining populations of indigenous Everglade mammals (e.g., raccoons, deer, opossum, and others), by more than 90% since the late 1990s. Researchers believe the skyrocketing python population is to blame. New research demonstrates that salt water, once thought to be a barrier that confines snakes to the swamp, is really no barrier. Some experts believe the pythons could expand their habitat throughout much of the Southeastern U.S. (FloridaToday.com, January 31, 2012). The Everglades directly border Miami resident ial neighborhoods. What could happen when pythons run out of native species to eat? The Bible identifies some sobering events that will occur at the end of the age. The Apostle John wrote of the fourth seal, the “pale horse,” that will result in the death of one quarter of the earth’s population, by the sword (war), hunger, and the beasts of the earth (Revelation 6:7-8). Jeremiah’s prophecy adds more detail, highlighting how birds and beasts of the earth will “devour and destroy” (Jeremiah 15:2-4). Florida’s pythons could be one tool that God eventually uses to bring these prophecies to pass. The World Ahead Weekly Update 1/28

Greetings from Charlotte –

While the world is watching the escalating war of words in the Persian Gulf between Iran and other nations of the world, Americans are listening to another war of words between men who hope to be the next President. This past week, another big storm and deadly tornado swept through the southern states injuring more than 100 people and killing two in Alabama. Here in Charlotte, Mr. Meredith has been writing and taped a new television program today. Mr. Wayne Pyle reports that last week’s Tomorrow’s World program by Mr. Ames, entitled “The Sabbath Controversy,” is expected to draw more than 4,700 responses and set a new record for responses to this topic. Mr. Meredith’s Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation in Houston, Texas, last weekend, drew 103 visitors. Mr. Ames’ TWSP in Mandeville, Jamaica drew 59 visitors. Dr. Wil Pierre spoke to two large groups in Haiti last w eekend (see reports below). I will be in Geneva, Switzerland this coming Sabbath and then make visits and take care of business items in Germany, Holland and Belgium. Your prayers for these activities and for God’s people are much appreciated.—DSW

To ensure timely delivery and to save on shipping costs, please let us know this information by February 3 (next week), for international congregations, and by March 2, for U.S. congregations.

Additionally, let us know of any scattered members who are unable to keep the Passover with a congregation and who need to receive the Passover Service recording and letter instructions to observe it at home. Please direct your requests to Dorothy McNair at the Church Administration Department by e-mail at dmcnair@lcg.org or by phone at 704-844-1960, ext. 2248, as soon as possible.

Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations

Houston, Texas: Thank you for your prayers for what turned out to be a very successful TWSP in Houston on January 21. There were 103 visitors and a total of 230 people who heard Mr. Meredith deliver a powerful message on “The Gathering Storm,” which had many in the audience audibly agreeing with key points throughout. One woman left her home in Conroe at 6:00 a.m. to walk to the presentation more than 40 miles away, but realized after three hours that she was not going to make it on time. She found a man to drive her to a bus station, and he paid for the bus ticket that would take her near the Houston Community College where the TWSP was held! Of course, one of our members gave her a ride home afterward. A very special “thank you” to all the Houston brethren who did a fantastic job in welcoming our visitors. I believe everything went very well, and the entire presentation was blessed. Please pray that nothing wil l keep those who said they planned to return next Sabbath for my follow-up presentation on “Where Is the Church Christ Built?” And I appreciate your prayers that God will inspire me to give the message they need to hear!—Phil Sena

Mandeville, Jamaica: We had 59 visitors and 39 members for Mr. Ames’ presentation in Mandeville. Thirty-four have signed up for the follow-up presentation on February 4 and there are four who showed interest in attending our Sabbath services. A picnic was held the day after the presentation, Sunday, so that the brethren would have time to fellowship with the Ames.—Las Fraser and Scott Winnail

Pensacola, Florida: On the first Sabbath in Pensacola after the TWSP, we had 13 individuals return for Sabbath services (10 adults and three children). There were a total of 35 people. Of them, six have no COG experience at all and seven were associated with the Radio Church of God or the Worldwide Church of God at one time. Our elder in the area, Mr. Steve Climer, gave the sermon and one lady commented to a member that she had not heard a sermon so powerful since she last heard Mr. Herbert W. Armstrong. We had Spokesman Club and Advanced Leadership Training lessons this Sunday for the Pensacola and Ocean Spring congregations and everyone was excited about the results of the TWSP. We want to thank everyone in Charlotte for their part in helping us to spread the Gospel in our area.—Ed Breaux

French Work Update

Visit to Haiti

My wife and I returned home safely from an exciting trip to Gonaives and Gros Morne, Haiti. On Saturday, January 21, 118 people met in the city of Gonaives for the first official Sabbath service after attending the Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation in November. After Sabbath services, Mr. Jove Jean-Pierre and I met with the group’s leading men to explain the correct format for Sabbath services. They were very positive in making changes. The leading men agreed to help each congregation member obtain a French Bible so that they can begin to study.

During the meeting, the leading men asked me to explain the differences between the Living Church of God and the Seventh Day Adventists. At the end of the meeting, everyone was given a copy of the Living Church of God’s Official Statement of Fundamental Beliefs in French.

On Sunday, January 22, 136 people attended the first TWSP held in the city of Gros Morne. The small congregation in Petionville (a suburb of Port-au-Prince) is doing very well. Some of the leading men from Gonaives will be attending Sabbath services there at least once a month. [Following is a detailed report on the presentation in Gros Morne].—Wilner Pierre

Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation in Gros-Morne, Haiti: On Sunday, January 22, 136 people attended the Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation in the town of Gros-Morne, located in Haiti’s northeastern mountainous area. Dr. Wilner Pierre, French-speaking Caribbean Area Pastor gave a presentation in Creole titled, “The Meaning of the Seven Seals.” Gros-Morne is located in an isolated part of the country. It was extremely difficult to travel through the mountains because the roads were covered with rocks. Mr. Gary Blanc, a long-time member of the Port-au-Prince congregation had to drive a Jeep through five river beds over large rocks. Six of the leading prospective Church members from the group in Gonaives accompanied Dr. Pierre to provide support. One of the leading men from the group in Gros-Morne had also spent the night in Gonaives so that he could guide Mr. Blanc through the mountains.

After a difficult four-hour drive, Dr. and Mrs. Pierre arrived safely to the meeting hall, where 136 people were patiently waiting. At the end of the special presentation, one of the new prospective members from Gonaives surprised Dr. Pierre when he walked on stage with a Bible Hymnal and led the group in singing “Onward Christian Soldiers.” This was one of the songs rehearsed during the song-leading workshop in Gonaives. He used the opportunity to practice in front of a large crowd. It was a wonderful experience.

Prayer Request Update: Wenceslas Kamwenubusa

Mr. Rees Ellis has informed us that our brother in Christ Mr. Wencesles Kamwenubusa died last Monday, January 23, at about 3:00 p.m., local time in Burundi. Mr. Ellis wrote, “As I said in my email last week, Mr. Kamwenubusa insisted just how very grateful he was for all the prayers and words of encouragement during his illness. Please pray for his wife Jacqueline, his family and members in Burundi.”

East Africa Update

Visit to Tanzania: I have just arrived from a successful trip to Musoma and Ukerewe in Tanzania. I took off for Musoma on January 11 and arrived there the next day. On January 13, we had a Bible study with 10 brethren in attendance. We held Sabbath services on January 14 in Musoma with an attendance of 20 brethren. On Sunday, Adonis and I travelled to Kisorya-Ukerewe, arriving late in the evening. For three days we had Bible studies with an average attendance of 57 brethren in Ukerewe. Both in Musoma and Ukerewe, we covered the subject of self-examination in preparation for the Passover and the Days of Unleavened Bread. The Sabbath of January 21 was an inspiring one with 74 brethren in attendance (38 children and 36 adults). After Sabbath services, I was asked to anoint a member who had a severe fever; such that he could not come out of his bed. After a brief Bible study on healing, I anointed him. On Sunday morning, he woke up with all his fever symptoms gone and was able to continue with his daily business.—Simon Muthama

Living Youth Programs

Living Youth Camp United Kingdom 2012

All LCG Youth Camps strive in their different ways to provide a balance of spiritual instruction and active pursuits in order to challenge and excite our young people both physically and spiritually. Each camp takes place in a well-supervised, godly environment.

This year’s summer camp in the United Kingdom will be held at the Frontier Centre, Wellingborough, not far from the UK Office in Northampton. Camp starts on Friday, August 3, and finishes the following Friday, August 10. Parents may collect their children that afternoon. However, we are planning to have a special youth-themed Sabbath service in the local area on August 11, and teens who would like to attend this service (and we hope you will) may spend Friday night at the Frontier Centre at no extra cost. Any parents living close enough to drive up to Northampton on the Sabbath (or who make their own arrangements to spend Friday night in the area) are also invited to attend this special service. This camp will be slightly different from previous years, in that all activities will be on-site and the accommodation will be in cabins. Activities will include mountain biking, abseiling, high ropes, kayaking, archery, fencing, bridge building, football, basketball, volleyball , team work and trust-building challenges, education, and maybe more!

The cost of camp this year is £120 and it is open to teens aged 12-18. If you would like to attend or serve as a member of staff, please obtain a Camper or Staff application form from your local congregation or the UK Office. The deadline for applications to be handed in to your pastor is February 19. Once you have received your acceptance, a £40 deposit will be required. The remainder of the camp fee may be paid in installments or when available. Overseas applicants who require early notification of acceptance so that flights can be booked, should submit their applications promptly and make this point clear on their form. Please direct any e-mail communications to Jamie Meakin at the UK office jmeakin@btconnect.com

Real Philadelphia Christians: The Scriptures reveal that Philadelphia Christians are dedicated to carrying out Christ’s instructions to preach the Gospel (Mark 16:15), warn the world (Matthew 24:14) and prepare a people to reign with Jesus Christ in the coming Kingdom of God (Luke 1:17; Revelation 5:10). However, as the name “Philadelphia” means “brotherly love,” true Philadelphians will also strive to follow Jesus’ admonition to “love one another” (John 15:12-17). They understand that showing unselfish, outgoing concern for others (instead of criticizing and sitting in judgment of others) is one of the distinguishing marks of a real Philadelphia Christian (John 13:34-35). Let’s all look for ways to develop and show brotherly love to others.

News and Prophecy—January 26, 2012

Iran Raises Threat Level. Recently, when a U.S. aircraft carrier passed through the Strait of Hormuz, an Iranian top commander “stated that Iran’s submarines are able to ambush and hit enemy vessels specially US Aircraft carriers from the seabed throughout the Persian Gulf.” This could be done using its Russian-made, sonar-evading, diesel-electric submarines. A Major General followed up by threatening, “We are not in the habit of repeating the warning and we warn only once” (TheBlaze.com, January 18, 2012). Now with oil sanctions imposed on Iran, a U.S. aircraft carrier, flanked by French and British warships, passed through the Strait of Hormuz, in open defiance of Iran’s threats. There are also “clear statements coming from Saudi Arabia and the UAE (United Arab Emirates) saying, indirectly, that they w ill replace Iran’s oil” (Reuters, January 25, 2012). In response, Iran is threatening to close the Strait to all ship traffic (msnbc.com, January 23, 2012). Iran’s actions appear to be causing the nations of the Middle East to coalesce, but not around Iran. Instead, Iran’s threatening actions appear to be pushing them together, “away from” Iran. Bible prophecies indicate at the end of the age, a King of the South will arise and “push” against a European Beast power, or King of the North (Daniel 11:40, KJV). God uses different peoples and nations to bring about His will (Daniel 2:21), and it appears that Iran may be used by God to bring together nations that will make up the King of the South.

Atheist Wins Court Battle Over School Banner. Last week, a judge ordered the removal of a 49-year-old banner in a gymnasium at Cranston West High School in Rhode Island. The banner reads as follows, “Our Heavenly Father, Grant us each day the desire to do our best, To grow mentally and morally as well as physically, To be kind and helpful to our classmates and teachers, To be honest with ourselves as well as with others, Help us to be good sports and smile when we lose as well as when we win, Teach us the value of true friendship, Help us always to conduct ourselves so as to bring credit to Cranston High School West. Amen” (WPRI.com, January 12, 2012). The lawsuit was brought by an ACLU-supported sixteen-year-old student who stated, “I’m an Atheist, and I don’t believe in the Heavenly Father, so I shouldn’t have to look at it [the banner].” The school is considering whether to appeal the case and has stalled in removing the banner (CBS/Associated Press, January 12, 2012). Long ago, God prophesied that the descendants of Ephraim and Manasseh would become a “company of nations” and a “great nation” (Genesis 48:17-19)—Great Britain and the United States (see our booklet The United States and Great Britain in Prophecy). The U.S. has been a God-fearing nation founded on biblical principles, thus the references to God in many of its founding documents, monuments and even its currency. It is sad to watch the Israelite-descended nations slowly reject their God-given heritage as citizens seek to do what is right in their own eyes (Deuteronomy 12:8).

The Universe is Full of Planets! For thousands of years, mankind has known the universe is full of stars. When the Hubble space-telescope was launched in 1990, scientists began to number the stars in our Milky Way galaxy alone at more than 100 billion. But the assumption, based on Hubble data, was that there were very few planets outside our own solar system. Now, NASA’s new and more powerful Kepler space-telescope is sending back evidence of planets outside our solar system—thousands of them. Based on the newly arriving data, scientists now think that the galaxy has “at least” one planet per star and likely more. This means hundreds of billions of planets! One Harvard University astronomer commented, “We’re awash in planets where 17 years ago we weren’t even sure there were planets outside our solar system.&rd quo; An astronomer from San Diego State University wrote, “Nature must like to form planets because it’s forming them in places that are kind of difficult to do.” He was referring to planets that circle two suns—for which we now have evidence (Associated Press, January 11, 2011). As scientists make new discoveries, it becomes more apparent how vast and diverse God’s creation really is. The universe was created for an incredible purpose that is outlined in the pages of Scripture. The World Ahead Weekly Update 1/21

Greetings from Charlotte –

More severe weather conditions erupted this week. A “monster” snow and ice storm blanketed the state of Washington in the northwestern part of the USA, while torrential rains produced flooding in northeastern parts of South Africa. Here in Charlotte, Mr. Meredith finished a co-worker letter and a Personal for Tomorrow’s World magazine in addition to holding a number of meetings. Mr. Wayne Pyle reports that Mr. Meredith’s television program last weekend, The Real Jesus, is expected to draw more than 3,400 responses. Today, Mr. Meredith flies to Houston for a Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation. Mr. and Mrs. Ames are on their way to Jamaica for a TWSP this weekend. Dr. and Mrs. Wilner Pierre are on their way to Haiti for a Sabbath service and TWSP. Mr. Ed Breaux reports that a total of 48 new visitors attended the two TWSPs that were recently held in Pensacola, Florida. Please remember to keep these important activities and the needs of our brethren in your prayers.—DSW

General Ministerial Conference

We are planning to have a General Ministerial Conference this year. The conference is scheduled to run from Monday, April 30 through Wednesday, May 2, 2012. A Council of Elders meeting is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, April 26-27. More details will be forthcoming.

Prayer Request Update: Wenceslas Kamwenubusa

In the December 8, 2011, issue of The World Ahead, we requested prayers for Mr. Wenceslas Kamwenubusa, a long-time member in the Central African country of Burundi suffering with terminal liver disease. Mr. Kamwenubusa later fell into a coma and, hope given up on his recovery, subsequently released from the hospital and sent home. We are thankful to report that this week Mr. Rees Ellis, French-speaking Africa Area Pastor, was able to speak with Mr. Kamwenubusa on the phone; he is no longer in a coma and is improving. Mr. Kamwenubusa would like to “thank all the brethren for their prayers which have been heard… God has graciously given [him] longer days,” wrote Mr. Ellis.

Feast of Tabernacles 2012

2012 U.S. Congregation Feast of Tabernacles Assignments (by State)

The Festival Office and the Internet Department are in full gear preparing for festival registration, planned to begin in February. As we prepare for registration, we would like to let our brethren in the U.S. know how congregations are assigned to the various Feast sites in 2012. As a reminder, brethren are assigned to a Feast site according to the congregation they attend, not according to their home address. For example, if you attend the Charlotte, North Carolina congregation, but live in Rock Hill, just across the border in South Carolina, you would be assigned to the Feast site for North Carolina, which is Virginia Beach. Following is the list of U.S. Feast sites and the States assigned to them:

Chattanooga, TN
Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee

Kauai, Hawaii
Hawaii

Lake of the Ozarks, MO
Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma

Newport, OR
Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington

Panama City, FL
Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Mississippi, Puerto Rico

San Luis Obispo, CA
Arizona, California, Nevada

Tannersville, PA

Note: Brethren in International areas, please check with your Regional Office to find out to which Feast site your congregation is assigned.

Living University

We are now in the second week of the semester and classes are off to a strong start. Just over 200 students are enrolled from around the globe, and many are taking advantage of the tuition-free courses. It is exciting to see the focus, dedication and enthusiasm for learning in those who have enrolled in classes. It is also encouraging to hear comments of how thankful they are for the opportunity to take classes that will prepare them to be better Christians today and more effective leaders in Tomorrow’s World!—Scott Winnail

The Importance of Wisdom: When Solomon reflected on life, he concluded that gaining “wisdom is the principal thing” (Proverbs 4:7). Solomon also records that wisdom “is more precious than rubies” and that learning to make wise decisions brings happiness and long life (Proverbs 3:13-18). With this biblical emphasis on wisdom, it is not surprising to see that Jesus, who as a child studied the Scriptures, “increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men” as He grew older (Luke 2:52). The Apostle Paul also urged Christians to use wisdom in dealing with people (Colossians 4:5-6). The key to gaining wisdom is to learn to fear God and develop the desire to live by every word of God ((Proverbs 1:7; 9:10). If we earnestly ask God for wisdom (James 1:5-7), if we diligently seek wisdom by studying His word (Deuteronomy 4:1-10; 2 Timo thy 3:15), and if we spend time with and listen to older and wiser people (Proverbs 10:1; 15:7; 18:15; 22:17) we will become more like the wise God whom we worship (Romans 16:27).

News and Prophecy—January 19, 2012

Vatican Wants Greater Involvement in the Holy Land. Several leading bishops from the Vatican recently visited a “Christian” village in the Gaza Strip. This event was done in coordination with the Palestinian Authority (PA). The “high profile group” of bishops later described the living conditions of the Gaza Christians as being like in a “prison”—due to the intensified sea and land blockades of Gaza by the Israeli military. However, this one-sided description by Catholic leaders overlooks Israel’s stated objective of defending its cities against rocket attacks launched from Gaza, and the ongoing Muslim persecution of Christians in the Palestinian territories. In December, a Vatican center in Jerusalem also hosted a conference with Christian and Muslim leaders entitled, “How to live together in a future Palestinian state?” (IsraelNationalNews.com, January 11, 2012). The Vatican has long wanted greater involvement in the Holy Land and Jerusalem in particular. This recent visit and further cooperation with the PA against Israel appears to support this long-standing agenda. Bible prophecies have long stated that just prior to the return of Jesus Christ to this earth, “gentiles” (non-Israelites) will occupy and control Jerusalem for a 3.5 year period (Revelation 11:1-2). The actions of the Vatican in the Holy Land today appear to fit with biblical end-time prophecies. For more information on this topic, review our booklet The Middle East in Prophecy.

Archaeology Validates the Bible—Again! Archeologists continue to discover more evidence that corroborates clear statements in the Bible. Israeli archaeologists, excavating near Jerusalem’s Western Wall, recently unearthed what they believe to be a 2,000-year-old clay seal. “The button-shaped object bears the Aramaic words ‘pure for God,’ suggesting it was used to certify food and animals used in sacrificial ceremonies.” The Israel Antiquities Authority said, “it believed it was the first time such a seal had been excavated, providing direct archaeological evidence of ritual activity in the temple described in ancient texts” (Reuters, December 25, 2011). Archaeological finds like this one are exciting, because they help validate the authenticity of the Holy Bible as an historical document. It also makes it more difficult for critics to continue to refer to the Bible as “just a book of fables.” Jesus stated several times, “there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known” (Matthew 10:26, Mark 4:22, Luke 12:2). Even though archaeological and historical evidence continues to emerge that supports the authenticity of Scripture, critics continue to ignore this evidence. For more information on the authenticity of the Holy Bible, review our free booklet, The Bible: Fact or Fiction?

2011 Texas’ Driest Year on Record. Throughout 2011, the average rainfall in Texas was just under 15 inches (37.5 cm). It was also the second warmest year on record. News reports stated, “The prolonged Texas drought is to blame for devastating agriculture and livestock losses, estimated in the billions of dollars. The historic drought has killed as many as half a billion trees, not including those that died in wildfires that scorched some 4 million acres in 2011” (Reuters, January 7, 2012). While Texas has experienced extreme drought since September 2010, many northeastern states experienced record rainfall in 2011 (NJ.com, November 25, 2011; Silive.com, September 13, 2011; ncdc.noaa.gov). Ancient prophecies in the book of Amos indicate that God will punish His people at the end of the age for their disobedience, “I also withheld rain from you, when there were still three months t o the harvest. I made it rain on one city, I withheld rain from another city. One part was rained upon, and where it did not rain the part withered” (Amos 4:7). As prophecy marches on, these extreme trends in weather will only continue and intensify. We need to watch world events and pray for those who are suffering, because fulfilled prophecies are clear indications that Christ’s return is coming closer!—Annette Wright, Julius Hart and Scott Winnail

The World Ahead Weekly Update 1/14

From Presiding Evangelist -

Dear fellow ministers and brethren,

I want to thank all of you ministers, wives and fellow workers in the field for your loyalty and hard work. We have just completed 19 full years in the Global/Living Church of God in the Work which Christ is using us to perform. God has certainly been blessing us in recent years with an extraordinary degree of unity and harmony. Your combined efforts in the field ministry have greatly added to this and to the 7%-plus increase in our financial income for the Work here in the U.S. during 2011. We have much to be thankful for and we do thank Almighty God for these blessings!

In His inspired Word, God directed James to tell us, “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience” (James 1:2-3). So, along with many blessings, God often allows serious trials to come upon His people to “test” us and help us learn certain lessons we might not learn any other way. As most of you know, quite a number of our members have—of recent date—been having very serious health issues, many of them potentially fatal. We have sent out notices and prayer requests about many of these situations of which we have become aware. I have given quite a number of full sermons on faith and healing over the last couple of years. But, just in the last few weeks, we have learned that my dear wife, Sheryl, has had a recurrence of cancer. And only this week, we have learn ed from medical tests that it has been determined that she has stage four cancer—affecting her liver, her lungs and has perhaps migrated into her ribs. She has now seen at least two physicians, an oncologist, and other medical experts to determine exactly what is occurring and what they recommend.

However, dear brethren, we have taught and believed for decades that even though medical assistance may be sought according to each one’s own understanding and conscience, above and beyond all of that there is a great God who heals. We know that divine healing was an integral part of the “Gospel Message” of Jesus Christ and the original apostles. For as Jesus began His ministry, the Gospel of Matthew tells us, “And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people” (Matthew 4:23). Obviously, there is nothing that Almighty God cannot and does not supernaturally heal when He decides to do so.

Brethren, we have recently had a Church fast—beseeching God to give us more faith and more answers to our prayers for this very situation. So I won’t try to say a lot more about this in this written message. But I do ask all of our brethren to “follow through” on the recent fast we have undertaken and to continue to beseech God—more than ever—to begin to supernaturally heal more of our dear brethren all around the world who are right now afflicted and suffering from various illnesses. But I do ask all of you to please add my dear wife, Sheryl’s, name to the “list” of those who need urgent prayers at this time! I deeply love her and I profoundly need her to help me fulfill my part in this ministry.

May God continue to guide all of you faithful servants in the field. And let us focus more than ever on the reality of God, of His promises and of His soon-coming Kingdom.

With Christian love,
Roderick C. Meredith

Greetings from Charlotte,

Severe weather continues to make headlines. Yesterday, a severe storm and possible tornado tore through several counties in western North Carolina (about two hours from Charlotte) destroying more than 50 homes and injuring more than a dozen people, while Anchorage, Alaska, is being buried in record snows. We have had a number of meetings this week, including planning sessions for utilizing the Internet more effectively. Living University classes also began this week with just over 190 students enrolled. This is a 33% increase in Spring Semester enrollment over last year and a 65% increase over two years ago. Mr. Hernandez has returned from his trip to Mexico and Central America. Mr. Ciesielka and his family are settling into Charlotte where he will head our efforts developing our Internet sites. Mr. Pyle reports that the responses to Mr . Wallace Smith’s Tomorrow’s World program, “The Fight Over Hell” should exceed 4,200. Mr. Ed Breaux reports that 29 visitors attended the TWSP in Pensacola, Florida (see below). Mr. Breaux will make a follow-up presentation this coming Sabbath.—DSW

United and Living Church of God Representatives Meet

As the end of this age draws near, it seems more appropriate than ever that God’s people, wherever they may reside, support one another in fulfilling the commission Jesus Christ gave us. With this in the forefront of our minds, representatives of the United Church of God, an International Association, met with the leadership of the Living Church of God at Living’s Headquarters in Charlotte, North Caroline, on January 9-10 for a two-day visit.

The purpose of the visit was to re-kindle friendships and discuss ways to cooperate in serving God’s people. The meetings were cordial and positive and included an open and frank discussion about those things that we have in common, and some of our differences, including church government and the way each Church is organized. We also discussed our different strategies for preaching the gospel in this modern age. There was no discussion of any type of merger.

Discussions about areas of cooperation within the greater Church of God community included: humanitarian concerns, disaster relief and other unforeseen events where we can help our members meet critical needs by supporting and loving one another as Jesus commanded. Cooperation could also include helping members who have difficulty getting time off for the Sabbath and Holy Days, and other legal matters that affect both organizations. It was agreed that open communication between Church of God organizations will become more important as world events move towards their ultimate prophetic fulfillment.

Those in attendance at the meetings in Charlotte on behalf of the Living Church of God were Dr. Roderick C. Meredith, Mr. Richard Ames and Dr. Douglas Winnail. Those who traveled from Cincinnati for the United Church of God were Mr. Dennis Luker, Mr. Victor Kubik and Mr. Peter Eddington. Mr. Luker commented that the Cincinnati team felt most welcome and were treated very warmly. In addition to the meetings, the UCG visitors were given a full tour of the Living Church of God headquarters and adjacent media center.

Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation

Pensacola, Florida: The Pensacola congregation hosted a Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation on January 7. The PowerPoint presentation, “The Gathering Storm,” was given by Mr. Ed Breaux. There were 57 individuals in attendance, including 29 guests. All of the guests remarked that they found the presentation interesting and informative. There was a great deal of interest from the guests in returning for next week’s presentation and some inquired about attending Sabbath services, also. The congregation was very thankful and excited about the potential growth in the area and look forward to next Sabbath.

Feast of Tabernacles

Canadian Feast Site Name Change

The name of our Feast site in St. Catharines, Ontario—announced in last week’s The World Ahead (and spelled by mistake as St. Actharines)—has been changed to Niagara Region, Ontario.

2013 Israel Feast of Tabernacles Tour

We are looking into the possibility of having a 2013 Israel Feast of Tabernacles Tour. This would be a unique and exciting educational opportunity to visit the Holy Land. The group would meet in Tel Aviv on Monday, September 16, and spend two days touring near the Sea of Galilee prior to the start of the Feast. Services would be held at the hotel of residence each day during the Feast, with tours to various Biblical sites in the afternoons, except on the Holy Days. Departure for home would either be late in the evening after the Last Great Day or two days later, following an optional day of touring and the Sabbath. The anticipated cost of the land package and air fare (depending on your gateway city) would be a minimum of $4,500-$5,000 per person. If you can afford to participate in this tour and are seriously interested in going, please log on to your My LCG accou nt at www.cogl.org and click on the “Pre-Register for Israel FOT” button. Please do not pre-register if you simply want to go, but are not sure that you can afford it. If we do decide to have a Feast in Israel, you will not be precluded from going if you did not pre-register. This survey is strictly designed to let us know if we have enough interest in a Feast in Israel to begin making firm plans.—Jim Meredith

Living University

LU is off to an exciting start this semester with an increased enrollment of about 33% over Spring 2011! More than 190 students are enrolled in classes—most of whom are taking these courses for credit. Enrollment in our “academic” Bible Study Course (THL 110a and THL 110b) is very encouraging. We plan to offer these two classes each semester in order to better serve our brethren. We will also continue to waive the tuition for these courses.

God’s Perspective on Trials: Sometimes, when we encounter trials and difficulties, we wonder what is happening and whether God has forsaken us. However, in challenging times, we need to remember several fundamental scriptures. Jesus told His disciples, “In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). God has also promised never to leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). The Apostle Paul reminds us that, “all things work together for good to those who love God” (Romans 8:28) and that even in trials, God will make “a way of escape” if we look to Him (1 Corinthians 10:13). James records that trials are opportunities to exercise faith in God and His promises and to build patience—while we do our part to work through the challenges we face. Let’s strive to remember and maintain this godly perspective when we encounter trials and as we pray earnestly for one another.

Have a profitable Sabbath,

News and Prophecy—January 12, 2012

Guttenberg to Run for German Office in 2013? In September 2011, Baron Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg said he would leave Germany for the U.S. His decision stemmed from a plagiarism scandal that resulted in his resignation as German Defense Minister, and the stripping of his doctorate by his alma mater. His plan was to spend two years in the U.S. on a type of “sabbatical,” in order to “rethink his political career” (Der Spiegel, September 6, 2011). Now fast-forward just four months… Herr Guttenberg appeared on the scene in Germany two weeks ago related to a technology project. This week’s headlines ran, “Disgraced former Defence Minister Karl-T heodor zu Guttenberg is taking his first steps towards a political come-back, less than a year after his plagiarised doctorate forced him to resign.” Guttenberg hasnow “agreed to meet [Christian Democratic Union] party officials in Bavaria to discuss his participation in the 2013 general election, Der Spiegel magazine reported on Sunday” (The Daily, January 8, 2012). The Baron’s star was on the rise until his fiasco several months ago. At the time, the German press was calling him “Germany’s most popular and promising politician.” It appears that his star may be on the rise again, perhaps in the near future (2013), as he could once again become “Germany’s most pop ular and promising politician.” Bible prophecies reveal that a charismatic and influential leader will one day head a European, German-led Beast power (Daniel 9:27; 11:21-23; Revelation 13:1-10). We need to keep our eyes on this up-and-coming political force.

Doomsday Clock Ticks Forward. “A group of scientists that tracks the likelihood of a global cataclysm says the world is moving closer to doomsday. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists announced Tuesday that it has moved its ‘Doomsday Clock’ to five minutes to midnight. The group says inadequate progress on stopping the spread of nuclear weapons and continuing inaction on climate change are the reasons for the change. The clock had been set at six minutes to midnight for the past two years. It was previously set at five minutes to midnight from 2007-2010. The group says in a statement that two years ago, there was reason for optimism ‘that world leaders might address the truly global threats we face. In many cases, that trend has not continued or be en reversed’” (Associated Press, January 10, 2012). Although the predictions of men are not the accurate prophecies of God, it is not difficult to discern, given the global difficulties today, that the world is approaching a precipice. Jesus clearly taught that the signs of the end of the age would be relatively easy to read: “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors” (Matthew 24:32-33). Doomsday Clock scientists are not far off. The end of the age and the triumphant return of Christ are approaching. For more on this important subject, review our exciting booklet, Fourteen Signs Announcing Christ’s Return.

U.S. Kindness in Troubled Region. Iran and the U.S. are “rattling sabers” once again in the Persian Gulf. Tightened sanctions on Iran have resulted in military exercises and threats of retaliation if the U.S. brought its carrier group back to the gulf (which it now has). An Iranian general recently warned, “I recommend and emphasize to the American carrier not to return to the Persian Gulf… we are not in the habit of warning more than once” (National Post, January 6, 2012). Amid the escalating tensions, the U.S. carrier strike group received an SOS from an Iranian fishing boat that had been captured by pirates. U.S. forces mounted a rescue, saving 13 Iranian sailors held captive for the last 40 -45 days. “They were held hostage, with limited rations, and we believe were forced against their will to assist the pirates with other piracy operations,” observed a U.S. Navy investigator. The released Iranian hostages were deeply grateful to their U.S. rescuers. Despite threats and lack of Iranian cooperation, it is encouraging to see kindness and humanity demonstrated by U.S. military forces. God prophesied that through the descendants of Isaac, “all the nations of the earth shall be blessed” (Genesis 26:4). One day soon, the god of this age will be removed as Christ’s righteous government fills the earth, and all human beings will be taught to practice godly ways that will ultimately lead to real peace!—Sue Bennett and Scott Winnail

The World Ahead Weekly Update 1/7

Greetings from Charlotte –

As we begin another calendar year, warning signs are flashing that 2012 could be a very difficult year—with an impending financial crisis spreading from Europe, the possible rearrangement of the European Union and war clouds spreading over the Middle East. Here in Charlotte, Mr. Meredith has been holding meetings. Mr. and Mrs. Ames and Mr. Jim Meredith and his wife Susan have returned from a very positive Kansas City Weekend. It was especially encouraging to hear about the new television coverage in Australia from Mr. Tyler (see below). Mr. Hernandez and I had very encouraging visits with brethren in Mexico City and Guatemala where we spent several days at a summer camp and held a conference with the leaders of congregations in the region. Mr. Ed Breaux will make the first Tomorrow’s World Special Presentat ion for the year in Pensacola, Florida this coming Saturday. Mr. Meredith and Mr. Ames will make TWSPs later this month in Houston and Jamaica. Your prayers for these important activities will be appreciated.—DSW

Kansas City Weekend

A pleasant “Howdy” to all! Yes, sunny, windy, but beautiful Kansas City, Missouri, enjoyed warm weather in December, contributing to a wonderful Family Weekend that went extremely well. Mr. Wallace Smith gave a Bible Study Friday night entitled, “The Greatness of God and Why It Matters” in a rustic setting at The Benjamin Ranch. Afterwards we enjoyed fellowship and tasty refreshments. The next day at Sabbath services, Mr. Jim Meredith inspired the 486 brethren in attendance to take full advantage of the opportunity to make new friends, to put others above the self, and to love each other as Christ loved us. Evangelist Richard Ames followed with the sermon entitled, “Seek First the Kingdom of God.” He gave us five ways to seek the Kingdom, including “Always be conscious of the two Great Commandments.” Following services a delicious beef brisket, salad and bean dinner was served, with lots of tasty desserts. A Fun Show began the evening and then many brethren followed Mr. and Mrs. Ames’ example of participation in a Western-style dance, quite a number in Western clothing, boots and hats. Sunday’s activities at the beautiful Okun Fieldhouse Gym concluded the weekend as about 200 people joined in basketball, volleyball, games, fellowship and fun for all. The day ended with championship games in volleyball and basketball! Wow, what a weekend!! Y’all plan to come on down and join us in beautiful Kansas City next year!!—Anthony Stroud

French Work Update: Visits to Guadeloupe and Martinique

My wife and I just returned from a profitable trip to Guadeloupe and Martinique. We traveled via St. Maarten to Martinique on Thursday, December 15, 2011. The next day, we flew to Guadeloupe with Mr. Ginier, the Elder from Martinique, to spend the Sabbath with the brethren there. We returned to Martinique on Sunday. The rest of the week we visited with the brethren. On Wednesday, I had the opportunity to visit with one of our oldest members, a 96 year old lady who is unable to attend Sabbath services. On Sunday, December 25, the Martinique congregation held its first Spokesman Club meeting since the beginning of the Living Church of God. It was a complete success. Thirteen enthusiastic men were present. We also had one of our leading men from Guadeloupe take a flight on Saturday evening just to participate in Club. Each member of Spokesman Club was asked to participate in the song-leading workshop. Everyone was excited and is looking forward to the next Club meeting. It was a wonderful experience.—Wilner Pierre

2011 Report for the French websites

The tenth year of the French website, www.MondeDemain.org saw the third version of this website released in July 2011, using the same design as the new Tomorrow’s World website released a few months earlier. In addition, we launched a dedicated website for the online Bible Study Course (www.coursdebible.org)—pre viously it was integrated within the main website. We also launched the section “News and Prophecy,” updated three times a week.

In 2011, the figures are excellent and some set new records, with an average of 850 downloads per day. We recorded 167,286 unique visitors, 235,229 sessions, 812,238 pages viewed and 312,000 items read/downloaded…. This was the second best year for the website. The most active countries were France (continental 50% + overseas 4%), Canada (17%), Belgium (6%), Haiti, U.S.A. and Switzerland (3%).

[With] the “dedicated version” of the Bible Study Course…the registrations increased by 85% and the pages viewed increased by 7%…. [I]n 2011, 12.6% completed the first test and 9.5% completed the 24 lessons. The new design and the new user-friendly interface surely make the online BSC more attractive. The average time spent on the BSC jumped from 1 to 9 minutes. This really is a big improvement!

Since its beginning (2001-2011), the French website has recorded more than 1.7 million visitor sessions, 5.2 million pages viewed and 2.1 million downloads. We recorded visitors from 202 countries and territories. There are 3456 students from 89 countries registered for the online Bible Study Course.—VG Lardé

Guatemalan Youth Camp 2011

This year the Latin American youth met in southern Guatemala, some 117 miles from the nation’s capital. Ministers and the youth arrived on Sunday, December 25. A Spanish ministerial conference was held on Monday and Wednesday, with Messrs. Winnail, Hernandez, Schaubeck, Orrego, Roca, Mora, Ortega, Sanchez, Tenorio and Monti.

The Youth Camp activities started on Monday 26. We had an attendance of 27 young people from Mexico, El Salvador and Guatemala. We also had the presence of Misses Deborah Lincoln-Strange and Marcela Arciga. It was an unforgettable experience because God blessed our activities and made them a success. Among the activities held was a Bible Study of the Ten Commandments, sports, games, crafts, arts and music.

On Tuesday, we had a Bible Study held by Messrs. Mora and Ortega. The campers were given bilingual Bibles, the Ten Commandments booklets in Spanish and English, and a T-Shirt with the Church’s logo.

The ministers had the opportunity to participate in some of the recreational activities. Also on Tuesday, the Guatemalan members came to the campsite because we had a congregational Bible Study given by Dr. Douglas Winnail to the congregation, campers and ministers.

On Wednesday 28, we resumed activities at 7 in the morning with aerobics, breakfast, and a Bible Study by Mr. Armando Orrego and so we continued our activities. In the evening we had a dinner dance for the youth and ministers. During the dance, we gave diplomas to all the youth who participated; the choir also participated among other activities. The youth fellowshipped and enjoyed each other’s company.

On Thursday, activities resumed with a breakfast and a Bible Study led by Mr. Sergio Roca from Guatemala. It was a wonderful and unforgettable experience for all of us. We thank God for allowing us to enjoy this wonderful camp and for being with us and for the people that made it possible. Also we would like to thank in a special way the people that gave us gifts from abroad.

We hope to see the youth in Guatemala in 2012.—Maria Cardona

Australasian News

New TV Opportunities in Australia

Australia recently obtained increased coverage for the Tomorrow’s World program throughout regional New South Wales and Victoria on a new television station, TV4. Apparently, the station management felt it was so successful they decided to increase their transmission footprint to include most of the rest of the nation. We were given an early option of buying more time, which we took, and now our program has the potential to be viewed by a possible audience of 22 million viewers in more than 8.3 million homes. We now have almost total national coverage in Australia. This means virtually all of this country and New Zealand has access to the program. Of course, this also means added costs.

India Update

We arrived home safely on Thursday, 1 December, after a very inspiring and successful trip to India. There was a bomb blast in Imphal after we left… My wife Rachel and I left for Kolkata, India on 24 November. We reached Kolkata at 5:00 p.m. Indian time…. From the airport we went to Indismart Hotel, which is about a half an hour drive, and had dinner [with members]. We discussed many matters and had good fellowship….

Sabbath Service: Due to the Prime Minister’s visit, and strikes, there was a delay in the morning service. There are militant groups in the state who demand a sovereign state separate from the Union of India. The brethren arrived safely by noon for services and I gave the sermon on “Unlearning Error.” After lunch we had a Bible Study on the “three resurrections.”

Church Luncheon: On Sunday, 27 November, we held a picnic on a beautiful mountain within sight and sound of a marvelous waterfall. All the brethren were able to attend.

We departed for Kolkata on Monday morning then travelled to Chennai, spending two days there before heading home.

Successful Visit: This is my fourth trip to Manipur and the first trip for Rachel. It was very inspiring and successful. All the members are happy and willing to learn more from the Church and understand and follow God’s Truth.—Rajan Moses

Watch Bible Prophecies! Jesus issued numerous warnings about the importance of watching world events that would begin to fulfill significant end-time prophecies. These admonitions to be alert and watch appear more than a dozen times in the New Testament (see Matthew 24:42-44; 25:13; Mark 13:33-37; Luke 21:34-36). Events making news today—droughts, floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, spreading violence and threats and wars—that converge at the same time we see the revival of a political power in Europe with definitive links to the ancient Roman Empire and promoted by an ecumenical-minded Roman Church, should be sobering to anyone with a knowledge of Bible prophecy. These developments should motivate us to grow spiritually and prepare for roles we have been called to fulfill in the coming Kingdom of God.&nb sp;We also need to remember Jesus’ warning that if we do not watch, we will not be ready for His return (Revelation 3:3). However, Jesus also promised, “Blessed are those servants whom the Master, when He comes, will find watching… Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect” (Luke 12:37-40). Let’s watch and do the job we have been given to do, so we can be ready for Christ’s return.

Have a profitable Sabbath,

News and Prophecy—January 5, 2012

Eurasian Union in Motion: Vladimir Putin envisions a Eurasian Union that will put Moscow on top of the world’s nations by 2015. The Russian Prime Minister “has a vision for a Soviet Union-lite he hopes will become a new Moscow-led global powerhouse.” On January 1, 2012, Russia moved one step closer to this goal with an agreement with Belarus and Kazakhstan to allow free movement of goods and capital across their borders. Putin’s plan is to extend his reach, becoming head of a Eurasian Superpower. “As Putin envisions it, the still-hypothetical union will eventually stretch from the eastern fringes of Central Europe to the Pacific Coast and south to the rugged Pamir Mountains abutting Afghanistan” (Associated Press, January 3, 2012). Mr. Putin’s plans for a Eurasian Union fit with prophecies recorded long ago in the Bible, where God revealed a similar f uture alliance that He would bring to pass (Isaiah 46:9-10)! In Daniel 11:40-44 the European King of the North (or “Beast”) is prophesied to destroy the Middle Eastern King of the South. This Beast will occupy Jerusalem, yet news from the east and north will “trouble him” (v. 44). This Eurasian Union could be a source of a 200-million-man army that will march from the east across the Euphrates and descend on Jerusalem (Revelation 9:13-19; 16:12-16). This massive army will annihilate a third of mankind and will destroy the Beast just prior to the return of Jesus Christ. The only nations capable of developing such an army reside in the proposed Eurasian Union and include: Russia, China, and possibly India, among others. For more information on this vital topic, read our booklet Armageddon and Beyond.

Israel, America, Iran and the Bomb: New intelligence suggests that Iran could have a nuclear bomb in a year or less. Because of this, U.S. policy toward Israel and Iran recently shifted. Israel’s Defense Minister noted that “the mind-set in Washington was ‘different two years ago,’ and that the US position vis-à-vis Tehran’s nuclear agenda today mirrors the one held in Jerusalem.” Further, “the Iranian threat is ‘militant and nuclear and only the naive still believe it is peaceful… [the US] completely understands this now.’” In a recent CBS interview, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta was asked how far the U.S. might go to prevent Iran from forging a nuclear bomb. Secretary Panetta’s response was, “we will take whatever steps necessary to stop it.” However, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman, General Martin Dempsey, added a sober note, “My biggest worry is they [Iran] will miscalculate our resolve… Any miscalculation could mean that we are drawn into conflict [along with Israel], and that would be a tragedy for the region and the world” (Jerusalem Post, December 21, 2011). Jesus warned of “wars and rumors of wars” around the globe prior to His return (Matthew 24:6). The Apostle John also warned of major atrocities during this time (Revelation 6:3-4). The ways of man ultimately lead to death and destruction, while the way of God leads to truth and life (Matthew 7:13-14). One day soon, the world will finally experience the peace and safety that we all dream about—but only after man exhausts all his options!

Nigerian Oil Spill: “Nigerian authorities were putting emergency measures in place on Thursday [22 December] to prevent an oil spill from a Royal Dutch Shell facility, the biggest leak in Nigeria for more than 13 years, washing up on its densely populated coast.” The oil company used airplanes to drop dispersant on the slick before it reached the Nigerian shoreline. “A U.N. report in August criticized Shell and the Nigerian government for contributing to 50 years of pollution in a region of the Niger Delta which it says needs the world’s largest ever oil clean-up, costing an initial $1 billion and taking up to 30 years” (Reuters, December 22, 2011). God gave man the incredible ingenuity to discover vast resources useful for power and other benefits. Yet, man’s ways are not God’s way. Ezekiel 34 notes that many leaders are self-absorbed and are disinterest ed in the people they lead (vv.1-8). The Apostle Paul lamented that the “whole creation groans” and eagerly waits for delivery from “the bondage of corruption” of today’s leaders (Romans 8:19-22; see also Revelation 5:10). In the years just ahead, the self-serving leaders of today will be replaced by Christ’s perfect, righteous government. This will usher in a society that will be taught to be faithful stewards of God’s creation! The World Ahead Weekly Update 12/31

Warm Sabbath Greetings from Charlotte –

As we turn the page on another year, what a year it has been! Sweeping political upheaval in North Africa and the Middle East, Germany taking the lead in demanding stricter fiscal union in Europe, and continued spiraling debt in the United States while political aspirants jostle to position themselves for the 2012 elections. Plus some of the wildest weather on record! Tighten your seat belts─2012 will not be the “end of the world,” but it is certainly shaping up to be another turbulent year as we hurtle towards the dramatic end of this age!

Meanwhile, it’s been busy in Charlotte as we hosted the annual Charlotte Family Weekend, with over 400 brethren in attendance (see announcement below). Dr. Meredith has completed another Tomorrow’s World article this week, as well as taping a new telecast entitled, “Which Christ Do YOU Worship?” Dr. Winnail and Mr. Hernandez were in Mexico City last Sabbath, with 108 in attendance at services and brethren from ten countries tuned in to the live transmission. They also attended the Guatemala Youth Camp and conducted a Spanish Ministerial Conference this week. Mr. and Mrs. Ames and Mr. and Mrs. Jim Meredith are heading for Missouri to attend the Kansas City Family Weekend. Budgets and other plans for 2012 are being worked on as we close out the final week of 2011. Thank you for your con tinued prayers for God’s people who are suffering from health trials, and for God’s Work that continues to go forward around this globe!—RMc

Charlotte Family Weekend

Beautiful, cool, December weather greeted visitors from all over North America to the 5th annual Charlotte Family Weekend. The weekend’s activities were kicked off on Friday, with a Marriage Seminar conducted by Messrs. Richard Ames, Scott Winnail, and Rod McNair. Mr. Bob League presented the Friday night Bible Study to 149 attendees. On the Sabbath, Dr. Roderick Meredith delivered a powerful sermon to over 400 brethren, and the special occasion was punctuated by the ordination of two deacons, Messrs. Louis Crespo and Mike DeSimone. The evening was topped off by a delicious banquet meal and dancing by young and old. The next day, over 200 brethren joined the sports activity, with open basketball and volleyball, a children’s basketball clinic, family games, and a silent auction of baked goods. A big thank you to everyone who participated in making this weekend a success!

Update from Guyana

Mr. and Mrs. Fitzroy Greeman recently made Church visits to brethren in Guyana and Barbados, where he serves as Area Pastor. Like many scattered groups in international areas, our small but steadfast group in Guyana has only occasional visits from a pastor—about once every other month. Here are some excerpts from his report on their trip to Guyana, December 16-20:

“On the Sabbath, we drove to the Oceanview Hotel for Services… There were 21 persons in attendance… After Services Mrs. Greeman distributed some used clothing. I then anointed two members for some health challenges they were having. I then held a Baptismal Counseling session with one prospective member… [On Monday, after visiting with a prospective member,] we left their home on the East Bank of the Demerara River, crossed that river and travelled about 10 miles along the west bank to a village called Hague where we met a prospective member and his wife. I held a Baptismal Counseling session with him before we were served some lunch. We then fellowshipped for a little while before we had to leave for our return trip to Georgetown.”

Mr. Greeman also mentioned in his report a number of former WCG members and others who were interested in meeting with him. We continue to pray that God will bring more of His scattered flock together with us to continue in the Work. Please also continue praying for Mr. Greeman’s health, as he is battling with a debilitating kidney condition.

Guidelines for Church Dances
As members are enjoying family weekends and activities that are now in full swing, we want to remind everyone of the policies and traditions that have been established for the Living Church of God Youth Camps and Church-sponsored dances. The guidelines below are based upon godly principles of love toward others, and are taken from previous postings in the weekly update (Sep. 28, 2000; Sep. 6, 2007; Sep. 10, 2009):
1. All music should be chosen carefully, with a conservative approach, and with the approval of the pastor or an individual to whom he specifically assigns this task.
2. No “free-style” dancing is permitted since this usually involves inappropriate music and promotes an attitude of abandoned inhibitions and showing off, thus focusing attention on the self rather than showing outgoing concern for others. Exceptions to this are some cultural, line, and novelty dances.
3. Music should not be so loud that those who prefer not to dance have a difficult time carrying on a conversation.
4. Lighting should be turned up enough so that the average person could read a book with ease.
5. Chaperones should stay for the entire dance. It is advisable to have a minister present for the entire function.
6. Small children at a family dance should be supervised and not allowed to run or engage in horseplay.

Living University

There are about 1.5 weeks remaining until the start of the next Living University semester. To date we have over 130 students registered for January 2012 classes, and registration is continuing. Because classes begin January 11, it is important that new students enroll in the University as soon as possible and register for classes, so text books can be ordered and received by the semester start date. Returning students also need to register soon and order text books as soon as possible. A complete listing of “Spring Semester” courses (spring in the northern hemisphere), can also be viewed on the Living University website under the link “2012 Spring Schedule.” To make application to Living University, to register for courses, and to find out more, please visit the www.livinguniv.com web site. For additional information or questions, please contact Ms. Michelle Bottella michelle.bottella@livinguniv.com, or 704-708-2294.

Well Done!

I recently read of a man with cerebral palsy who gave inspirational talks to groups about overcoming trials. This is part of what he said in one presentation:

“God is preparing me… I am in His oven, so to speak. I am being baked for an eternal purpose. I am not finished yet. When I… stand before Him, He is going to say, ‘Well done.’”

We all desire to be “well done,” too! Brethren, many of us are in the crucible of trials right now, and God is allowing the heat to be turned up. But it is for a purpose. The Apostle Peter referred to that when he spoke of the “fiery trials” that will come upon us. But beyond that, he also focused on the ultimate hope of the Kingdom, that “when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy” (1 Peter 4:12-13). Let’s hang in there, support one another, do the Work, and stay focused on the goal He has laid out for all of us. Through His power, we can make it!

Have an encouraging Sabbath,
Rod McNair

News and Prophecy—December 29, 2011

Baron zu Guttenberg Returns from Exile: EU Vice President Neelie Kroes invited Karl-Theodore zu Guttenberg to Brussels “to advise on how to provide ongoing support to Internet users, bloggers and cyber-activists living under authoritarian regimes.” Baron zu Guttenberg acted as a former “Federal Minister of Defence, and of Economics and Technology, in Germany,” and was thought by many to be in the running to be the next German chancellor, prior to the revealing that he had plagiarized large portions of his doctoral dissertation (Europa.eu, December 12, 2011). He has been living in the U.S. for the last several months in a type of self-imposed exile, while working with a major political think tank. Baron zu Guttenberg’s relatively quiet return to Europe has not gone without notice. Some have accused hi m of attempting a political comeback─something the Baron has denied. However many believe that public opinion will be forgiving of his editorial misdeeds given the proper amount of time. This sentiment was reflected by the EU Vice President when she was pressed about zu Guttenberg’s checkered past: “Kroes insisted it was she who approached zu Guttenberg and not the other way around. ‘I am looking for talents, I am not looking for saints’” (Financial Times, December 12, 2011). Scripture does reveal that at the time of the end, a “strong man” will come onto the scene to lead Europe. This man will have the power and charisma to lead Europe in some amazing ways (see Daniel 9:27, 11:21-23; Revelation 13:1-10). Although we do not yet know the future role of zu Guttenberg, he is descended from royalty, he is highly educated and well connected, and he is ambitious. He is definitely one person to watch, as even members of the mainstrea m press recognize.

Floods and Earthquakes: Typhoon Washi swept through the Philippines two weeks ago. Flash flooding devastated a southern region and two cities, killing over 1,100 people. According to one official, “Mortuaries have been unable to cope and authorities have started digging mass graves to bury victims” (Reuters, December 20, 2011). Tens of thousands of displaced persons are crowded into evacuation facilities with sanitation problems and little water. Over 330,000 people are now unable to return to their homes (AFP, December 24, 2011). Meanwhile in New Zealand, Christchurch was hit by yet another series of earthquakes Friday afternoon, December 23. The first registered a 5.8 and the second a 5.9. Although the airport was closed for several hours and minor damage occurred, including liquefaction in some residential a reas, no wide-spread damage was done. However the earthquake did bring back powerful emotional reminders of the stronger and frightening quakes earlier this year (Bloomberg, December 25, 2011). Christ revealed that as the end of the age approaches, earthquakes will occur in “various places,” and the winds and seas will roar─resulting in the hearts of people becoming faint (Luke 21:25-26). We should expect to see increasing natural disasters as we draw closer to Christ’s return. For more information, review our booklet Fourteen Signs Announcing Christ’s Return.

Falklands Issue Heats up in South America: Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay (a land-locked nation) have backed Argentina’s recent ban of boats carrying the Falkland flag from docking in their ports. Argentinian President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner “claimed Britain was ready to use its military to steal natural resources ‘anywhere, anyhow.’” Britain has controlled the islands since the 1830’s and most residents want to remain under British rule. Britain has reacted strongly, with one former Royal Navy head calling for the nuclear submarine stationed in the South Atlantic to surface from time to time and “stick up its mast to deter aggression.” The Defense Ministry has “dusted off” and is revising 2010 defense plans for the Falklands. However, many expe rts feel force will not be needed. Not only is Argentina not seen as a formidable threat, there are likely other ways to avoid confrontation (Mail Online, December 26, 2011). World pressure for Britain to relinquish its control over the Falklands is increasing. God promised through Isaac’s wife Rebekah, thousands of years ago, that her descendants would “possess the gates of those who hate them” (Genesis 24:60). God’s Church has long understood that these gates include the powerful sea gates long held by the U.S. and Britain around the globe. Gibraltar and the Falklands alone remain─for the time being. As Britain continues to stray from God, these gates too will likely be removed!─Scott Winnail and Adrian Käfer
