The World Ahead Weekly Update 9/4
Greetings from Charlotte –
Final plans are coming together for the Feast of Tabernacles around the world. Please continue to pray that God will bless the weather so that favorable conditions will prevail during the Fall Festival season. This week, Mr. Meredith taped another Tomorrow’s World television program, “How to Overcome Satan,” offering the booklet Satan’s Counterfeit Christianity. Mr. Wallace Smith also taped two TW programs: #387 “Terror of the Tribulation,” offering the Armageddon and Beyond booklet, and #384, “Prophets and Pretenders,” offering the DVD 2012: Mystery and Truth. Mr. Smith’s program that aired last weekend, titled “2012, Bible Prophecy and You” is expected to draw more than 5,000 responses. Mr. Mario Hernandez has returned safely to Charlotte after a number of profitable visits in Mexico. Dr. and Mrs. Scott Winnail held a reception this week for our on-site Living University students and faculty. We had 69 visitors attend the Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations that I conducted last Saturday and Sunday in Little Rock, Arkansas and Memphis, Tennessee (see report below). This coming Saturday and Sunday, Mr. Wyatt Ciesielka will conduct two follow-up presentations titled, “Where Is God’s Church Today?” The combined impact of our media efforts and the Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations appear to be factors in the reports of congregational growth that we are receiving. Your prayers for the success of these efforts to preach the Gospel are much appreciated!
*Please note that The World Ahead will not be published next week due to staff travel for the Feast of Trumpets.

Little Rock and Memphis Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations
Mr. Wyatt Ciesielka reports: Dr. Douglas Winnail conducted TWSPs in Little Rock, Arkansas and Memphis, Tennessee last Saturday and Sunday. In Little Rock, 31 guests attended along with 105 members, for a total attendance of 136. In Memphis, 39 visitors came to the presentation in addition to 32 members. The brethren in each location provided delicious refreshments and valuable support services. All visitors received folders containing copies of the PowerPoint presentation, booklets and reprint articles. Many of the guests commented that the presentations were very helpful and informative, and they were impressed by the zeal and friendliness of the brethren. A number of guests indicated they plan to return for the follow-up presentation this coming weekend. We thank God for blessing these presentations, and we are excited to see the good fruit that He produces from these efforts to preach the Gospel.
Upcoming Ministerial Moves (to occur after the Feast of Tabernacles)
Mr. Sheldon Monson will move to the Washington DC area where he will pastor congregations in Baltimore, Maryland; and Winchester, Virginia, and develop additional congregations. Mr. Monson is also teaching several classes for Living University. Mr. Ken Frank will remain in Fredericksburg, Virginia and continue to pastor congregations in Williamsburg, Virginia and Salisbury, Maryland. Mr. Frank will also begin teaching several classes for Living University in addition to his pastoral duties. Mr. Adam West will move from the Kansas City area, where he has been assisting Mr. Rand Millich, to pastor congregations in Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota that have been pastored by Mr. Sheldon Monson.
New Zealand and Vanuatu Update
Mr. Kinnear Penman reports: Mr. Ames’ program, “You Can Understand Prophecy,” set a new response record for a program on Prime TV. We received 355 calls, e-mails and letters. Throughout the month [of August] response levels were very good and an average of 268 responses came in each week. Of these, an average of 104 were from first-time callers. Carolyn sent out a total of 1,228 mail items during the month. These contained 2,160 items of literature. Included in this total were 44 sets of Bible Study Course lessons. I made three pastoral trips during the month. The first was to Vanuatu, from August 4-11. I conducted Sabbath Services in Orap. The congregation there is doing well under Mr. Jerry Sam’s oversight. He and his wife, Colette, are fine examples to the members and have their respect and affection. The congregation is keenly anticipating the Feast of Tabernacles and will host a record nine visitors from New Zealand and the USA. I also visited a co-worker on Ifira Island whom I invited to attend the Feast in Orap. Carolyn and I made a trip to the South Island [New Zealand]; flying via Christchurch. I conducted the morning Sabbath service in Otautau, our southern-most congregation. In the afternoon I presented Class 3 of the Living Leadership Course.

Feast of Tabernacles 2010
Registration Numbers: With the Feast just under three weeks away, we currently have 4,633 brethren in the United States and Canada registered for the Feast. When other international areas are taken into account, we have 5,390 registered (not all international brethren are able to use the registration system). We want to thank all of our brethren for taking advantage of our online systems to register and prepare for the Feast. It helps the Festival Office and our Festival Coordinators greatly to know you are coming and be able to communicate with you online.
Last Great Day Plans: Every year at the Feast of Tabernacles, some few brethren leave the site before the end of the Feast to head for home, sometimes even missing afternoon services on the Last Great Day. Please remember that the Last Great Day—the eighth day of the Feast as commanded in Leviticus 23:36—is a holy convocation commanded by God. In the afternoon service on the Last Great Day, Dr. Meredith will be giving the entire Living Church of God (via recorded video) a special message of encouragement and admonition to send us on our way, after eight exhilarating days of rejoicing before God. Let’s make sure we all end the Feast on a high note by making our travel plans such that we are there until the last service is over!
Contact Information for Atonement Services and Sabbath Services on October 2: With everyone travelling to and from the Feast, some will need to know where Atonement services on September 18, 2010 and Sabbath services on October 2, 2010 will be conducted. We have posted a list on the MyLCG section of the www.cogl.org website, for your information.

The Value of Hope: Having hope in the future—something positive to look forward to—is a vital aspect of life. Many have long understood that life without hope is empty. The Bible states, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick” (Proverbs 13:12). But what is the real hope in the life of a Christian? King David wrote, “You are my hope, O Lord GOD” and “I hope in Your word” (Psalm 71:5; 119:147). The Apostle Paul said under cross-examination before a Roman governor, “I have hope in God… believing all things which are written in the Law and in the Prophets” including the promise of a resurrection and eternal life that he would receive at the return of Jesus Christ (Acts 24:14-15; Titus 1:2; 2:13). We are urged as Christians “to lay hold of the hope set before us” (Hebrews 6:18), to “purify ourselves” so we can become “children of God” (1 John 3:1-3) and be “ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15). Let’s all strive to be motivated by this same hope today!
Have a profitable Sabbath,
Douglas S. Winnail
News and Prophecy—September 2, 2010
Flooding and Devastation. So far this year, more than 230 million people have been affected by flooding in China—that is equal to two thirds of the U.S. population or nearly half of Europe’s population! Also, more than 3,000 people have died in the flooding, resulting in $50 billion dollars in damage. The August floods alone claimed nearly 1,500 lives (ChinaDaily.com, September 1, 2010). In Pakistan, August floods affected one fifth of the nation and more than 20 million people—equivalent to Australia’s population! Five thousand miles of roads and railway have been washed away, along with 7,000 schools and 400 health care centers. Rescue workers have been forced to destroy roads and railroads in order to divert flood waters away from towns and villages. So far, the damage has exceeded the total aid given to Pakistan for the past five years (New York Times-Global Edition, August 24, 2010). Bible prophecy specifically warns that various kinds of natural disasters will increase in frequency and intensity as the end of the age approaches (Matthew 24:7; Mark 13:8). The disastrous flooding in China and Pakistan certainly fits these prophecies. The U.S. and other nations have invested billions of dollars in Pakistan, only to see much of it literally washed away in the floods. These catastrophes may be one more way the U.S. and other Israelite-descended nations will be brought low–by giving their resources to help others in need. Sadly, the “god of this age”—Satan the devil—is angry and relishes the sufferings of human beings made in the image of God. God speed the day of Satan’s removal from the face of the earth (Revelation 20:1-3)!
A Perpetual Fire in the Holy Land. On the eve of peace talks between Palestinian and Israeli leaders and President Obama, Hamas gunned down two men and two women (one pregnant) in a vehicle in the Gaza Strip. Three thousand people subsequently turned out to celebrate this tragedy as a “heroic operation.” For decades, U.S. presidents have tried to broker peace between Arabs and Jews in the Holy Land, only to find that peace fractured quickly afterwards. Hamas likely initiated this massacre in order to halt the peace talks in Washington, because they oppose the current Palestinian leader, Mr. Abbas. God warned that, in the last days, leaders would speak of “peace, peace,” but there would be no true peace (Jeremiah 8:11). The U.S. will boldly try for peace again, but the outcome will be the same. In addition, conflict between ethnic groups (or political factions) is prophesied to increase before the return of Jesus Christ (Matthew 24:7). Finally, Jerusalem is predicted to be a “cup of trembling” to many (Zechariah 12:2, KJV). We need to “pray for the peace of Jerusalem” (Psalm 122:6), a time when the flames of war will finally be extinguished when Jesus brings true and lasting peace to the Holy Land! Only then will peace truly come to Jerusalem and to the earth.
Terror in the Streets. “With three police officers killed in separate instances in two months, and calls from some Illinois lawmakers for the National Guard to patrol its most violent streets, Chicago once again finds itself under growing pressure to rein in crime.” Chicago is well on the way to meeting last year’s statistic of almost 500 murders—mostly gang-related. “Chicagoans were alarmed this summer after a series of murders, including the death of an 8-year-old girl who was shot by a stray bullet while skipping rope”—which suggests that streets are not even safe to play in (YahooNews.com, August 30, 2010). But is “more law enforcement” really the answer, or just a temporary fix? God warned ancient Israel—and hence the Israelite-descended nations—that because of its disobedience, “I also will do this to you: I will even appoint terror over you…” (Leviticus 26:16). Later, God inspired Moses to write, “You shall fear day and night, and have no assurance of life… because of the fear which terrifies your heart, and because of the sight which your eyes see” (Deuteronomy 28:66-67). Today, many live in fear in our cities—fearing to walk or even to play. One day soon, Christ will return and usher in a time of peace, when people no longer oppress or “terrify” others (Psalm 10:18). God speed that day!—Scott Winnail
The World Ahead Weekly Update 8/28
Greetings from Charlotte -
It’s hard to believe the Fall Holy Days will be here in less than two weeks—the summer really has flown by! Mr. Meredith and Mr. Ames taped new Tomorrow’s World programs this week. On Tuesday, Mr. Meredith taped program #378, “Your Ultimate Destiny,” offering the booklet by the same title, and tomorrow he will tape program #382, “The Truth About Divine Healing,” offering the booklet Does God Heal Today? Mr. Ames taped program #383, “Who Is Jesus?” offering the booklet What Is a True Christian? Mr. Wallace Smith will be in Charlotte next week to tape additional programs. Mr. Rod McNair, Dr. Wilner Pierre and Mr. Bud Jersett have returned from a very encouraging and informative visit with our brethren in Haiti (see report below). Living University classes are off to a good start for the Fall semester. Mr. Gerald Weston reports that 98 visitors attended three Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations in Ontario, Canada last week with 30 visitors attending the follow-up presentations. Mr. Gene Hilgenberg reports that 17 visitors attended the two follow-up TWSPs in Edmond and Tulsa, Oklahoma. This weekend, I will be in Little Rock, Arkansas, and in Memphis, Tennessee, to give two more TWSPs entitled “What’s Ahead for America?”
Church Administration
Answered Prayer
Mrs. Gloria Overton, a member in the San Diego congregation, reports God’s recent intervention in her life: “I was born with two broken lumbar vertebrae. I had no problems until age 31. My doctor said I should get an operation to repair them, which I did. The operation helped for four years. I had no problem walking during that time. After four years, I had to jump from a burning building and I re-injured my vertebrae. It caused me to suffer great pain from 1980-2010. I had to use a cane and a walker during that period. After returning to Church in 2010, I asked a minister of God in San Diego to anoint me. The next week, I walked into the Church without a walker, totally healed. I thank and praise God.”
China Trip and Canadian Update
Mr. Gerald Weston reports on his and Mr. Stuart Wachowicz’s recent visit to China: The trip was most helpful as we were able to meet face to face with individuals who can put us on the air in a number of Asian markets. We were also able to view some television firsthand to see what techniques are being employed for news programs and what religious programming is currently on the air in Hong Kong and Guangdong province. We were encouraged by the assistance we would be given and by the opportunities currently available to us in several Asian countries…. both Mr. Wachowicz and I were very much encouraged by the potential we have to reach such a large portion of the human race. There are opportunities open to us that we could not have imagined six months ago. Your continued prayers for God to keep open these doors and His guidance and assistance in walking through them are appreciated…. Overall, Canadian Church attendance is up 21% for January through July of this year over the same period in 2009.
Haiti Update
Dr. Wil Pierre, Mr. Bud Jersett, and I recently visited Haiti, arriving in Port-au-Prince on Wednesday, August 18, and returning to Charlotte on Sunday, August 22. Dr. Pierre pastors the congregation in Haiti, and Mr. Jersett is a building contractor from the Kansas City congregation. We were there to assess the needs of the brethren after the terrible earthquake. Upwards of 35 Living Church of God brethren live in Haiti and are faithfully attending Church. We were very encouraged to meet 26 of them on the Sabbath (others were sick). We spoke with many of them about the disaster that struck Haiti last January and about their current living situations. Though many lost relatives or friends in the tremblement de terre, the personal stories of miraculous deliverance for themselves and their immediate families were inspiring. God protected them through an unbelievably horrible disaster (the devastation is still visible all over Port-au-Prince in mangled and exposed rebar, crumpled homes and piles of rubble), and is providing for them on an ongoing basis. Many still have jobs and permanent housing, and those who are in temporary shelters are looking for more permanent housing. One member has generously donated an undeveloped family property located in a rural area outside of Port-au-Prince, that may present some helpful opportunities for brethren in the future. Plans are also being made to develop a foundation as a vehicle for working in Haiti, as well as getting Le Monde Demain broadcast on the radio. Because the house where the Church office previously was collapsed, a new office is also being set up. Though living conditions are hard in Haiti, we were encouraged to see the brethren enduring, faithful, and fully committed to God’s Work and Church.—Rod McNair
London Career Day Activity
On Sunday, August 22, a half-day Career Workshop was presented to those in the London congregations interested in discovering more about and utilizing their talents and skills in the current job market. Mr. and Mrs. Rick Stafford and Mrs. Margo Lloyd (combining over two decades of professional career counseling experience) presented three personality and interest inventories, along with vital information on how to “access the hidden job market.” Several handouts which included information on resume/CV construction, helpful websites and interviewing pointers, were distributed and discussed. Finally, a role-playing exercise featuring Mrs. Lloyd (as an employer) conducting a job interview with Mrs. Stafford (setting a great example) and Mr. Stafford (enthusiastically showing the wrong way to behave during an interview) was hilarious! Participants will now be able to continue their career exploration with individual counseling and support.
Quintuple Baptism in Chicago!
Mr. Phil West reports: Have you repented of your sins? Have you accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Savior? On August 21, 2010, after Sabbath services, these two questions were asked five times and answered affirmatively each time. I had the privilege of baptizing five new members into the body of Christ as about 45 brethren were present to witness this joyous event. The newly baptized range in age from 18 to 80. Mr. Jerry Duckett, Mr. Randy Clarke, Mr. William Morton, and Mr. and Mrs. Willie (Cynthia) Richard III are the newest members in Chicago. We suspect Satan tried to disrupt the activities as the baptismal tank partially collapsed after the second person attempted to exit the tank. However, God prevailed, and with the help of some young men who held up the sides of the tank, the rest of the baptisms went smoothly. After the baptism ceremonies, all enjoyed a meal of salad, pizza and dessert at the home of Ms. Carolyn Paul. This was an event that those present will not soon forget!
West Virginia Family Camp
Mr. Paul Shumway reports: This month, the West Virginia brethren enjoyed a fabulous Family Camp at the beautiful Glenwood 4-H Camp in Princeton, West Virginia. Thirty-nine took part, including 16 youths and 23 adults (some came all the way from North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Connecticut). With some unable to go to youth camp over the years, this event provided a family camp that highlighted our youth. Campers enjoyed activities such as Christian living classes, archery, canoeing, crafts, life lessons, and softball. We could all sense the blessings of our Great God in so many ways—including His divine protection, the near-perfect weather and the wonderful fellowship and bonding that took place. We were even loaned canoes, paddles and life jackets—the only group to be given this privilege! Just about everything went very smoothly even though this was our first attempt and so few had had any camp experience. It was as if God was smiling down on us! A major highlight was seeing the growth—in some cases, transformation—that took place in so many of the young people. Parents said they could hardly recognize their own children! It was very exciting! We were the last camp group of the summer at this site and we were told that we were the easiest to clean up after. As I went to pay the last half of camp rental the superintendent said, “Forget it, we’re even. You’re a good group. Save the money ($500) and apply it towards next year. We’d love to have you back!” We look forward to next year!

Importance of Mercy: One of the fundamental qualities that Christians need to develop to become like God and reign with Jesus Christ is mercy. Showing mercy involves exercising patience, understanding, compassion and forgiveness—even when we don’t feel like doing those things. The Scriptures reveal that God is full of mercy and compassion (Exodus 34:6-7) and He desires that we develop these same qualities (Micah 6:8; Hosea 6:6). Solomon states that showing mercy honors God (Proverbs 14:31). Jesus taught that the merciful will receive mercy (Matthew 5:7) and that God values mercy over sacrifice (Hosea 6:6; Matthew 9:13). Jesus also taught that mercy is a vital key to good human relationships and those who receive mercy, but do not show mercy to others will face serious consequences (Matthew 18:21-35). In human relations we may judge others guilty before the law, yet, the Apostle James states that “Mercy triumphs over judgment” (James 2:13). As we develop the mind of God, we will come to understand the importance of showing mercy to everyone we deal with—and we will be preparing to rule with Jesus Christ in His kingdom.
Have a profitable Sabbath,

News and Prophecy—August 26, 2010
American Bar Association to Urge Legalization of Same-Sex Marriage. Two weeks ago the American Bar Association (ABA) passed a resolution to urge state, territorial and tribal governments to eliminate barriers to same-sex marriage. According to Douglas Napier, senior legal counsel at the Alliance Defense Fund, “This [resolution] is so far afield from their primary purpose that this is nothing more than using the ABA to advance a political agenda—a social political agenda.” “They did it with the abortion issue in the 90’s, and now they’re doing it with marriage.” Napier continued his observation, “They [the ABA] aren’t speaking for the majority of attorneys… They don’t represent the majority of attorneys in the United States, yet they put themselves out as the voice of the American legal profession” (CNSNews.com, August 13, 2010). More and more groups and individuals are bent on engaging in social issues beyond their purview, and now national groups of lawyers are also joining the movement to overthrow the remaining godly values in our nations. Bible prophecy states that at the end of the age, men would be lovers of themselves (2 Timothy 3:2). The Apostle Paul warned about coming judgment because of growing and rampant homosexuality (Romans 1:18-31). Jesus also warned that lawlessness would abound at the end of the age (Matthew 24:12). When the lawyers—keepers of the law—lose track of morality and begin pushing unrighteous laws, what will come next for society?
Plunging Male Circumcision Rates. According to at least one researcher, male circumcision rates in the U.S. dropped from 56% in 2006 to less than 33% at the end of 2009—that is almost a 50% drop in just three years. In a recent interview, pediatric bioethicist Dr. Douglas Diekema cited several factors that may have impacted this steep decline: (1) the American Academy of Pediatrics’ rather neutral stance on the matter beginning about ten years ago, which resulted in insurance companies dropping coverage of the procedure, (2) anti-circumcision activists using emotional pleas—referring to male circumcision as genital mutilation, and (3) increasing Hispanic populations that do not traditionally practice male circumcision of infants. Dr. Diekema went on to highlight the benefits of male circumcision that will likely be lost with the declining trend, such as a significantly decreased risk of infant urinary tract infection—that can be a dangerous condition—and a significantly decreased risk of sexually transmitted disease transmission, including HIV. Dr. Diekema also pointed out that the risks inherent in infant circumcision are far less than those at older ages (NPR, August 22, 2010). As the U.S. moves away from its Judeo-Christian roots, practices that were once commonplace are now becoming taboo. Although God no longer requires circumcision for spiritual reasons (see Acts 15, Romans 2:25-29), the health benefits are still well known in the medical profession. But today, anything associated with biblical beliefs is being rejected—regardless of the benefits to children and adults alike.
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) Increase in Young British Women. “Almost half a million new cases of [sexually transmitted] infection were diagnosed in Britain last year. Among women, two-thirds were aged between 15 and 24.” These numbers increased by 12,000 over the previous year and indicate increasing promiscuity among adolescents and young adults. Sadly, 11% of young women and 12% of young men experience re-infection after being treated (Express.co.uk, August 25, 2010). Sadly, the types of STIs being contracted usually result in sterility if untreated and can greatly increase the chances of miscarriage among women. God warned that because of the sins of Ephraim (modern British-descended peoples), the nation would experience a time in the future with “… No birth, no pregnancy, and no conception.” This will occur in part through “miscarrying” and “dry breasts” (Hosea 9:10-17). Sexually transmitted diseases could certainly cause these curses. However, The Bible reveals that obedience to God and His ways brings blessings, “I will take sickness away from the midst of you. No one shall suffer miscarriage or be barren [sterile] in your land…” (Exodus 23:20-26). God speed the day when all will obey God and experience the rich blessings of obedience!—Scott Winnail, Wyatt Ciesielka, and Sue Bennett
The World Ahead Weekly Update 8/21
Greetings from Charlotte -
We have a number of very encouraging items to report this week. On Monday, Living University began its fourth year of operation with more than 200 students enrolled in classes for the fall semester. This is the highest enrollment we have had to date—with about 70% from the USA and about 30% from international areas. The Work’s income has continued to run about 4% above last year, for which we are very thankful. Mr. Meredith held a number of meetings. Mr. Rod King taped two new Tomorrow’s World television programs—“What Is the Beast?” and “Seven Proofs God Exists”—before flying back to the UK on Thursday evening, and Mr. Hernandez will be visiting congregations in Mexico this weekend. Last Sabbath Mr. and Mrs. Ames visited our new congregation in Braselton, Georgia. Forty-seven visitors attended the Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations I made in Edmond and Tulsa, Oklahoma on Saturday and Sunday. I also enjoyed the opportunity to visit with many of the members in these congregations. Mr. Martin Fannin reports that 48 visitors attended the follow-up TW presentation he made in Knoxville, Tennessee—this was about 70% of the number of visitors for the first presentation—which is very encouraging ! (See report below). This coming weekend, Mr. Gene Hilgenberg will do follow-up TWSPs in Oklahoma entitled “Where Is God’s Church Today?” Your prayers are appreciated for all these presentations.

Healing
A member in Spain, Mr. German Nistal, wrote to us this week about God’s healing intervention in his life. More than one and a half years ago, he had a medical emergency and, as he was being transported in an ambulance, he asked the person accompanying him to contact the Church for an anointed cloth. He later found out that he had a serious heart condition that required a high risk surgery. The doctors said he could expect only a few months to live without the surgery, which he refused to undergo. Now, 18 months later, our member realizes that what saved him was having requested the anointed cloth. Last month he was personally anointed by Mr. Hernandez during his ministerial visit to Spain, and Mr. Nistal reports feeling much better. He wrote, “I believe that if God has brought this sickness upon me is to correct me and to try my faith. If He heals me, it will be for His glory, for by His stripes we are healed (1 Peter 2:24; Isaiah 53:5). And, if it is not His will [to heal me], what matters is that, when my time to “sleep” comes, I be watching and ready so that at Christ’s return I can be in the first resurrection and reign with Him for a thousand years and then for all eternity.”
Knoxville Follow-up Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation
Despite the sweltering Southern heat, the Gospel message was preached on the Sabbath of August 14 in Knoxville, Tennessee. Forty-eight visitors joined 33 members to attend a Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation. The message was given by Pastor Martin Fannin, titled “The Return of Jesus Christ.” Forty of the 48 visitors were returning after attending a TWSP the previous Sabbath where they had heard an insightful message presented by Evangelist Douglas S. Winnail titled “What’s Ahead for America.” Dr. Winnail’s presentation laid a good foundation for the follow-up presentation. The fruit was evident as some expressed the desire to begin attending weekly Sabbath services. The Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations provide a direct opportunity to preach the Gospel message to prospective members. Please continue to pray for the success of these events as we strive to finish the end-time Work.—Marc Nicholson
Spanish Update
Mr. George Schaubeck, from Costa Rica, who coordinates the mailing of the Spanish-language magazine, reported this week that the Church recently obtained a postage permit in that country which will allow us to mail the magazine without the need to affix stamps on each magazine. This significant development, although seemingly small, will save us valuable time in the mailing of our magazine El Mundo de Mañana (Tomorrow’s World)!
New Zealand Update
Mr. Kinnear Penman reports: [The Tomorrow’s World program] “You Can Understand Prophecy” has just set a record for number of responses here in New Zealand. So far we have had 355 calls (118 of them from first-time callers.) This clearly beats the previous record of 319. Actually, to say we had 355 calls is not quite accurate. We did not count the high number of duplicate calls from people who phoned two, three and even four times to make sure we got the voicemail message. We are delighted.

Feast of Tabernacles 2010
Panama City, Florida
Cruises: Attention all those who will be attending Panama City for God’s Feast of Tabernacles! We are expecting to completely fill both of our cruises, so if you plan to participate in either the Dolphin Watch Cruise or the Shell Island Cruise, please purchase your tickets now to guarantee your place. Also, the Senior Citizens Luncheon will be held on Friday, September 24, the second day of the Feast. Those who want to attend must pre-pay for these tickets, since we must give the vendor a headcount 72 hours in advance. It would be very helpful if as many brethren as possible would pre-pay for their tickets to all the activities. We will hold Sabbath services in Panama City on the Sabbath after the Feast, October 2; please notify the site coordinator Jack Lowe at jlowe@lcg.org if you plan to stay over.

Transforming Faith: The Apostle Paul urged New Testament Christians, “do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:1-2). The word “transformed” comes from the Greek word metamorphoo which means a complete and total change—as when a caterpillar undergoes a metamorphosis into a butterfly! Jesus told potential Christians that they must repent (Gr. metanoeo) which involves learning to think differently and turn with sorrow from a past course of action when we realize it is wrong (Mark 1:14-15). As we regularly study and meditate on the word of God and ask God to help us change, we will develop more of the mind of Christ (Philippians 2:5). As we make conscious decisions to think, talk and act as Jesus would—as we crucify the old self—Jesus Christ will be able to live His life in us (Galatians 2:20). This is the transforming faith that enables us to come out of the darkness of this age and become lights to the world (Ephesians 5:8-10).
Have a joyous Sabbath,

News and Prophecy—August 19, 2010
In U.S., New EU Ambassador Overshadows British. A London newspaper reports that Joao Vale de Almeida, the new EU ambassador to the U.S., has informed American officials that he should be regarded as “first point of contact for transatlantic discussions” regarding foreign policy and security issues because he is now “leading the show” among European representatives in Washington (The Daily Telegraph, August 12, 2010). Mr. Vale de Almeida occupies a post in the new EU diplomatic corps established by the Lisbon Treaty, and he states that “I am the first new type of ambassador for the European Union anywhere in the world.” In addition to the new EU ambassador claiming to speak for Britain and other European nations to Britain’s most important ally (the U.S.), some politicians are also suggesting that “the EU should take the place of countries like Britain and France at international bodies including the United Nations and the International Monetary Fund.” Concerned British officials see the new ambassador’s statements as evidence of Britain’s waning influence and “proof that the EU diplomatic service is usurping the powers “of nation states.” These new EU representatives confirm what Bible prophecies have long foretold: that, as a result of God’s people turning away from Him, God would “break the pride of your power” (Leviticus 26:19), God’s people would be displaced on the world stage by other nations (Deuteronomy 28:43-45) and, at the end of the age, many nations of Europe would surrender their sovereignty to a Beast power that will arise on the continent just before the return of Jesus Christ (Revelation 17:12-13). We appear to be watching these ancient prophecies coming true today!
Mistaken Assumptions About Democracy. Thomas Jefferson penned one of the great assumptions underlying modern democracies, “Whenever the people are well-informed, they can be trusted with their own government”—yet this assumption appears to be highly suspect. The Boston Globe (July 11, 2010) reports a number of recent studies that found, “when misinformed people, particularly political partisans, were exposed to corrected facts in news stories, they rarely changed their minds. In fact, they often became even more strongly set in their ways.” This is because “we often base our opinions on our beliefs… [and] our beliefs can dictate the facts we chose to accept.” Another reason we reject some factual information is that it is often difficult and threatening to admit that we are wrong. Another study revealed, “the political ignorance of the American voter is one of the best documented data in political science” and that “misinformed people often have some of the strongest political opinions.” In fact, “the ones who were the most confident they were right were by and large the ones who knew the least about a topic.” Researchers conducting these studies see the assumption—that more information will ensure that people will change their minds—as “a potentially formidable problem” in a democratic system. In light of this research, it should come as no surprise that when Jesus Christ returns to set up the Kingdom of God, He will not come with more facts and pleasant words, but “with a strong hand” (Isaiah 40:10; Revelation 11:15-18).—Jim and Sue Bennett, Rodger Bardo, Douglas Winnail
The World Ahead Weekly Update 8/14
Greetings from Charlotte -
This week we conducted a Council of Elders phone meeting and a Living University Board meeting. In the Council meeting, Mr. Meredith mentioned that Church attendance in the USA and International areas is 9-10% more than last year, the U.S. income is about 4% greater than last year, Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations are bearing good fruit and Tomorrow’s World television programs continue to draw between 3,000 to 6,000 responses per program. We also discussed several doctrinal and policy matters. In the Living University Board meeting, Dr. Germano reported that last year was a very positive year for LU with the addition of a new computer program for managing student information and a generous response to fund raising appeals. The retention rate for students is currently more than 90% and more than 140 students will enroll in Fall semester classes. We also had a very profitable discussion about the future of Living University. In addition to conducting meetings, Mr. Meredith has been writing and preparing to tape another TW program next week. Mr. Rod King and Mr. Mario Hernandez arrived safely here in Charlotte. Mr. King reports that the Summer Camp in the UK went very well. The Living Youth Camp in Pennsylvania is going well and will conclude tomorrow (see below). Last weekend, 71 visitors attended the Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation in Knoxville, Tennessee (see below). Mr. Martin Fannin will make a follow-up presentation this weekend titled, “The Return of Jesus Christ.” This Sabbath and Sunday, I will be in Tulsa and Edmond, Oklahoma to make two TWSPs titled, “What’s Ahead for America?” Your prayers for these presentations will be appreciated.

Prayer Request: Wayne Pyle
Wayne Pyle, a long-time Deacon who has served in the Work for more than 40 years, and as our Media Coordinator for many years, has been diagnosed with Stage Four cancer. Mr. Pyle has undergone successful surgery for removal of a cancerous tumor in his colon, but the cancer has spread to his liver. His oncologist has said that the prognosis is not good. Mr. and Mrs. Pyle request the fervent prayers of the Church for God’s intervention and healing on his behalf.
Knoxville Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation
On the Sabbath of August 7, the brethren in Knoxville, Tennessee hosted a Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation. Seventy-one visitors joined 59 brethren to hear the lecture titled “What’s Ahead for America,” presented by Evangelist Douglas S. Winnail. Afterwards, guests joined the brethren for refreshments and fellowship. Many visitors commented on how interesting and insightful the presentation was. They expressed a desire to return next Sabbath to hear a follow up lecture titled, “The Return of Jesus Christ,” which will be presented by Pastor Martin Fannin. The Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations provide a unique opportunity to preach the Gospel message in a more direct and personal way to many prospective members. So, let’s continue to pray for the success of every one of these Special Presentations.—Marc Nicholson

The Importance of Prayer: Numerous scriptures emphasize the importance of prayer. We are told that David and Daniel prayed three times a day (Psalm 55:17; Daniel 6:10). Jesus began His day with prayer (Mark 1:35), and even prayed all night before making important decisions (Luke 6:12-13). Jesus also took time to teach His disciples how to pray and provided an outline of a model prayer so that they would not blindly follow the vain and repetitive prayers of other religious leaders (Luke 11:1-4; Matthew 6:5-15). The Apostle Paul urged Christians to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). The New Testament reveals that the prayers of the saints are like sweet incense to God (Revelation 5:8), and that the ears of the Lord are open to the prayers of the righteous (1 Peter 3:12). Peter also admonishes believers, “the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers” (1 Peter 4:7). As we see the end of this age approaching, let’s follow these examples and heed God’s instructions about the importance of prayer.

News and Prophecy—August 12, 2010
British Muslim Mourns for Britain. A British Muslim recently expressed her concerns about the increasing Talibanisation of young children in Britain (Mail Online, August 5, 2010). Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, the head of British Muslims for Secular Democracy, expressed dismay at how Muslim children are punished for drawing stick-figures of people, playing with Teddy bears, taking music lessons and attending social events with “unbelievers.” She notes these ideas stem from Wahabism—“the joyless and backward Saudi belief system followed by Al Qaeda” and other Islamic extremists. She states that the brutal treatment of women by the Taliban in Afghanistan is emerging on British soil, and she expresses her dismay that “our politicians and Muslim ‘leaders’ here would allow their [the Taliban’s] twisted ideology to spread across Britain.” She describes Muslim parents who try to protect their children from the moral decay in British society by sending them to Muslim schools, only to be exposed to the twisted ideas of Islamic radicals. She asks, “Why are we fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan and indulging Taliban values here?” She notes the attempts of British politicians to appease radical Islamists are only making the problem worse by allowing the radicals to spread their “distorted creed.” She concludes, “The future is bleak for Muslims and the country. Many of us British Muslims care deeply about both.” Long ago, God warned the children of Israel, “if you do not obey the voice of the LORD your God, to observe carefully all His commandments… the alien who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you” (Deuteronomy 28:15, 43). We are witnessing the fulfillment of these prophecies today!
American Christianity Losing Believers. In America today, millions of people are walking away from churches. Growing numbers are “unaffiliated” with any particular church. The reason is often the hypocrisy of self-proclaimed Christians. Studies by evangelical George Barna reveal that born-again Christians divorce more frequently than atheists and agnostics. Evangelical adolescents who claim to believe in abstaining from pre-marital sex are more likely to be sexually active than their peers in other religions. According to Barna, “Every day, the church is becoming more like the world it allegedly seeks to change.” One religious writer observed, “The hypocrisy between Christian beliefs and actions is driving Americans away from the institutional church in record numbers” (Charlotte Observer, August 11, 2010). Jesus warned about the hypocrisy of professing believers, “This people honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me” (Mark 7:6-7), and He pronounced a curse on those who cause others to stumble (Matthew 18:6-7; Mark 9:42-43). Professing Christians today should take note!
Controversial Judge Overturns California Homosexual Marriage Ban. On Wednesday, August 4, a judge with a history of “pro-gray” rulings overturned a voter-approved amendment to the California Constitution that defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman. His 136-page ruling that declared the amendment unconstitutional included “some of the most radical statements about marriage yet encountered” (Christianity Today, August 5, 2010). In making the decision, the judge, widely identified as homosexual, accepted the claims put forth by proponents of same-sex marriage as rational, but he rejected the evidence and arguments of defenders of heterosexual marriage as irrational. Within days, lawyers for the Governor and Attorney General of California urged the judge to implement his ruling without further delay—claiming this was in the “public interest” (OneNewsNow, August 7, 2010). While this controversial decision by an activist California judge is now being appealed, it represents a “significant step toward the full normalization of homosexuality within the [American] culture.” Many Americans have forgotten God’s warning, “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil” (Isaiah 5:20).—Douglas Winnail, Jim and Sue Bennett
The World Ahead Weekly Update 8/7
Greetings from Charlotte –
The summer seems to be moving swiftly! Living University begins its fourth year of operation in just over a week—on August 16—and I hope that many will take advantage of this opportunity to increase their understanding of the Scriptures. Two Living Youth Camps are also underway, in Pennsylvania and in the United Kingdom. Next month we will be observing the Fall Holy Days. Mr. Meredith has been writing this week, and Mr. Ames taped a new Tomorrow’s World program today, titled “Questions Evolution Cannot Answer,” that will offer the booklet The Real God: Proofs and Promises. Mr. Wayne Pyle reports that last week’s TW program by Mr. Meredith, titled “2010 in Prophecy,” drew more than 4,200 responses, and that the response rate for TW programs this year is nearly 11% greater than last year (see below). Mr. Charles Ogwyn reports that 40% of those who respond to our online advertising request literature and that the average cost for our Internet advertising is 81 cents per response. Mr. Joe Brown reports that 18 repeat visitors attended the follow-up TW Special Presentations (titled, “Where Is God’s Church Today?”) last weekend in Thomasville, Georgia and Lake City, Florida. Mr. Mario Hernandez is moving to Charlotte this week so the Spanish Work can be coordinated from here. This coming weekend I will be in Knoxville, Tennessee, for services and a Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation. Next week we have a Living University Board meeting and a Council of Elders phone meeting. Your prayers will be appreciated for these events.

Healing
Mr. John Hunter reports: Two Sabbaths ago I was asked to anoint a young lady (12) whose thumb had been slammed in a car door on Monday of that week; her mother had put a splint on it. A homeopathic doctor who had examined it found it to be broken and put cushion on the splint to add comfort. It was still throbbing when the girl and her parents came to me for an anointing on the Sabbath, after the service. After anointing her, I felt what seemed to me to be that “evidence of things unseen,” and I told the girl, “I think the Eternal is going to give you a blessing here very quickly.” Well the pain stopped very soon. Then during Sunday night the splint fell off. When she awoke to find it off she found she could wiggle the thumb and there was no pain! The thumb was completely healed! Praise to the Eternal our Healer!
New Zealand Update
Mr. Kinnear Penman reports: We are delighted with the ongoing response we are receiving to the Tomorrow’s World program. During July, we averaged a total of 228 responses to each program. Of these, an average of 96 (42%) were first-time callers. We are receiving many favorable comments from viewers who are excited by the information we are giving them. We have had approval for the broadcast of three new 30-second spot ads directing prime viewers to the new program time of 8:30 a.m. on Sundays. During July we mailed 1,422 pieces of mail containing 2,506 individual items of literature. Year-to-date, we have mailed 18,880 individual items of literature. We dispatched 56 sets of Bible Study Course lessons during July.
Jamaica Update
Mr. Lascelles Fraser reports: July started with good attendance in Kingston and Ocho Rios on the first Sabbath. On the second Sabbath, to coincide with the visit of our Regional Director, we had a combined service in Kingston with 108 in attendance (a record for the Living Church of God). After services, we had a meal together and Dr. Scott Winnail had time to fellowship with the brethren. This was not the only record we were to experience during the month—on July 4, the Tomorrow’s World telecast, “Teach Me to Pray,” presented by Mr. Ames generated a record 145 responses. On Sunday, July 11, we had a “Sermonnette Workshop” and the workshop was followed by a brief Feast of Tabernacles preparation meeting with the leading men present and some words of encouragement from Dr. Winnail.
Living University
Fall Semester 2010 Registration
Living University classes begin on August 16—just over a week away. Although more than 100 students have already registered, space is still available in most of our classes. If you are interested in taking an LU course this semester, you should plan to register and purchase textbooks this week. This week we highlight two more courses being offered this semester. Living Youth Camp
Teen Camp—Pennsylvania
Mr. Jonathan McNair reports: Pennsylvania Living Youth teen camp is off to a great start! Forty-eight girl campers and 28 boy campers arrived on Tuesday, August 3, and the next day jumped right into orientation and a full day of activities. We have 53 staff members who have done an exemplary job of adapting to the challenges of a new setting and facility this year. A storm brought some rain Wednesday afternoon, knocking out electricity for some in nearby Pittsburgh, but thankfully the camp was spared the worst of it. Activities and classes include dance, archery, ultimate frisbee, aquatics, speech, life roles, adventure class and wilderness trip. And, in the Christian Living classes, we are enthusiastically teaching the “Seven Laws of Success”! We’ll be posting information from camp on the www.livingyouth.org website, including a daily feature written by one camper a day called “Letters to Home.” For pictures and daily updates about camp, check the www.livingyouth.org website.
Teen Camp—United Kingdom
Mrs. Shayne King reports: All is well and the kids are having a ball at United Kingdom Teen Camp in Croft House, Northampton! In the last three days they have done sailing, raft-building, rock-climbing, cycling, bat-watching, swimming and orienteering. Along with the forums on Christian Living, they also participated in a career analysis on Wednesday. Mr. Rod King is heading up the cooking, with two ladies to help, including one from Malaysia, who prepared a seven-dish Asian banquet (we were slicing and preparing all day)! Fanny Ellis is working on a presentation each day and Mr. John Meakin is videoing the highlights. The Ellis’ have done a brilliant job of putting it all together and their approach with the youth is wonderful. All in all, we feel very blessed for our first camp for the European area.
Feast of Tabernacles 2010
Feast of Tabernacles Sermon CDs
Pastors have been asked to provide us with a list of those who will be needing Feast of Tabernacles sermon CDs because they are unable to attend the Feast. If you will be unable to attend the Feast this year, please see your pastor to be put on the list. Note: Feast sermons will also be uploaded (one per day) during the Feast at www.lcg.org, for those who have Internet access.
Services Before and After the Feast of Tabernacles
We will also be putting together a list of where Atonement services, and weekly Sabbath services after the Feast, will be conducted so, as you are travelling to and from the Feast, you will know where you can attend while on the road. When we put this list together, we will post it on the MyLCG website (www.cogl.org). Festival Coordinators are also determining whether or not they will have Sabbath services following the Feast at or near their Feast site—please contact your Festival Coordinator for more information.
Financial Assistance
We are now going over the Festival Assistance request forms, and are having to make difficult decisions because of our limited funds available. We want to let all of our brethren know that festival assistance decisions have to be based on biblical priorities, with priority for assistance going first to widows and orphans (Deuteronomy 14:28-29). If you have only recently begun attending services, and have thus not saved enough second tithe to attend the Feast, we may have difficulty helping you with assistance. If you are just newly attending and are notified as not approved for second tithe assistance, we encourage you to attend whichever days of the Feast you can—such as the first and last Holy Days or the weekly Sabbath during the Feast if you are close enough to the Feast site. In other words, attend within the limits of the funds you personally have available this year. Then, begin saving second tithe for next year so you can attend the entire Feast. You can also benefit from our sermons posted daily during the Feast on the Church’s website, www.lcg.org.
Speaking Schedules
United States and Canada speaking schedules for the Feast of Tabernacles have now been sent. Most international speaking schedules have also been sent. If you are on the speaking schedule, please begin preparing now for your assignment(s), placing special emphasis on giving meat in due season (2 Timothy 4:2), specifically on the Good News of the return and wonderful reign of Jesus Christ on earth! Sermonette and sermon speakers: please submit the title(s) of your message(s) to your festival coordinator by September 1.

Gentleness is Godliness: We understand from the Scriptures that Christians have been called to become kings and priests—civil and religious leaders—in the Kingdom of God. In this world, leaders often feel that to appear as a leader, they must exert control over others to show who is in charge. Yet, Jesus said this human tendency to “lord it over” others will not be tolerated in His coming government (Matthew 20:25-28). Instead, God is looking for individuals who are able to serve and lead in a gentle—but not weak—manner. David records how God dealt gently with him (Psalm 18:35). Solomon said that patience and gentle words can persuade difficult people (Proverbs 25:15). The Apostle Paul dealt gently with brethren instead of using his position to make demands and issue orders (1 Thessalonians 2:6-7). Paul also urged Christians to be humble, gentle and patient when dealing with others (Ephesians 4:1-2). Bible prophecies indicate that while Jesus Christ will return and rule with a “strong hand,” He will gather His flock as a shepherd and “gently lead those who are with young” (Isaiah 40:10-11). Anyone who hopes to lead in the Kingdom needs to remember that gentleness is a trait of Godly leaders.

News and Prophecy—August 5, 2010
China’s Growing Global Threat. “ALMOST half of Australians believe that China will become a military threat to Australia within 20 years,” according to a recent Lowy Institute poll. While most Australians appreciate the economic benefits of a relationship with China, most believe that their government has allowed too much Chinese investment in Australia. A majority also feel China’s goal is to dominate the Asian region. The survey revealed that Australians “were positive about China’s economic growth but fearful of its military aims” (The Courier-Mail, May 31, 2010). While Bible prophecy does not indicate that China will “rule the world” prior to Christ’s return, it does inform us that populations of Israelite-descended nations, like Australia, will experience captivity by gentile nations at the end of the age (Amos 5:3; Deuteronomy 28:41-50). God often uses other nations as the “rod of His anger,” in order to get the attention of the people He works with. Egypt and Assyria are two historic nations God has used. Might He also use China to “bring Israel low”? Time will tell, but events certainly appear to be moving in this direction.
More Oil Spilling. Monday, July 23, witnessed another oil spill—this time in the state of Michigan. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates the spill at more than 1 million gallons. Oil began spilling from an aging pipeline built in the 1960s along the Kalamazoo River. Officials fear the environmental ramifications if the spill travels through the river and reaches Lake Michigan. The owner of the pipeline apparently delayed cleanup efforts for three days following the spill, creating a public outcry about this safety violation-plagued company (Associated Press, July 29, 2010). Crumbling infrastructures and an apparently insatiable demand for petrochemicals has set up situations ripe for disasters—as is being witnessed around the globe. As the creation itself “cries out” for Christ’s return (Romans 8:19-22), we should be moved with compassion as Christ was, and follow His command to pray to the Father, “thy kingdom come” (Matthew 6:10). Only after God’s Kingdom is set up on earth, will man’s futile attempts to create a perfect society be set right, as the world learns to live by the perfect law of liberty (Isaiah 2:2-4; James 1:25).
Water and the Future. Population scientists and world leaders warn that water will be a major factor in future geopolitics. As the world population soars and global demand for food grows, the finite water supply available for food appears to be dwindling. In fact, in some areas of the world, farmers are vying for irrigation water with those who need it for drinking water. The World Bank’s vice president recently warned “the wars of the next century will be about water” (UncommonWisdomDaily.com, July 28, 2010). Other experts believe that water shortages in the future will lead to higher food prices around the globe (Daily Mail, April 19, 2010). Bible prophecies reveal that increasing famines and pestilence will appear as we approach the end of the age (Matthew 24:7). In addition, hyperinflation will also affect the cost of food (Revelation 6:5-6). The time is coming when “The poor and needy seek water, but there is none, their tongues fail for thirst…” (Isaiah 41:17). Although difficult times are ahead due to nations rebelling against God and His way, there is also hope, because God promises that He will eventually cause rivers to open in “desolate heights” and He will make the wilderness a “pool of water” (Isaiah 41:18-20).—Scott Winnail
The World Ahead Weekly Update 7/31
From The Presiding Evangelist –
Your Prayers are NEEDED!
Dear Fellow Ministers and Brethren,
Our Father in heaven has given us a great deal more growth in the last year or two! We have given you the statistics on this—including a ten percent increase in our average Church attendance here in the United States! We are very grateful for this and thank God for it! Nevertheless, this brings up an obvious need for more co-workers, more members and more ministers to serve the increasing number of brethren and the greater needs of God’s Work overall. Jesus Christ Himself was “moved with compassion” when He saw multitudes all around Him who were confused and lacking true Christian leadership. Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest” (Matthew 9:37-38).
So our living Head, Jesus Christ, has directly instructed His followers to pray about these very things. Each of us should deeply realize that, now, we really are near the end of an age. We must be absolutely committed to preaching the “Ezekiel Warning” to our peoples, to preach the Good News of Christ’s coming World Government and in preparing a “people for God!”
Therefore, I ask all of you faithful members of God’s Church to join with us here in Charlotte and literally “cry out” to God to provide more co-workers, more members and more ministers to serve the many newer members who are even now beginning to come with us from every direction! God Himself is granting us this growth—and God Himself wants every one of us to be concerned, to be involved and to be active members of the “team” Jesus Christ is using to finish the Work.
So please pray fervently about all these needs! Encourage each other to get involved and specifically pray for the other members and co-workers you may know personally. Ask God—over and over—to open new “doors” for us to reach out to this world while we have the opportunity. And beseech God to bring with us more ministers to serve these people. Most of our new ministry will come up through the ranks from our own membership in the Living Church of God. We are grateful that quite a number of men are already doing this. We encourage all who may be qualified to dedicate themselves to “growing” in every way through the Advanced Leadership Program, the Spokesman Club and other avenues of Christian training—certainly including taking courses from the Living University as God makes possible.
Also, quite a number of “new” ministers may come with us in years to come as various “splits” begin to occur in the other Church of God fellowships. This, in fact, has already happened! Many of you are well acquainted with the fact that our Regional Director for Britain, Europe and parts of Africa, Mr. Rod King, literally jumped “through the hoops” by being—first of all—a minister in Worldwide, later in United, later in David Hulme’s church and—feeling none of them were really “doing the Work”—finally came with us about eight years ago. We did not make him “wait for years” in order to get involved. Within a very few months he was preaching and serving God’s people in Australia. Later, he and his wife were willing to move to Great Britain to head the Work there—as I needed to bring Dr. Douglas Winnail back here to Charlotte to become Director of Church Administration worldwide. A number of other ministers have come to us from other groups—and still more are on the way. So we need to pray fervently that God will bring with us those whom He chooses—without in any way trying to “pressure” other ministers to come with us. Yet, if God guides them to come wholeheartedly—and they sincerely desire to be “part of the Work”—we should try to welcome them warmly and give them every help and encouragement in this transition to a new ministry in the Living Church of God.
All of us need to pray for one another and pray for these new brethren and ministers who may come, and to “reach out” through our loving concern and prayers to help them in every way. As we grow together as a “family” in Christ’s service, He will bless us, empower us and enlarge us a great deal in years to come. So let’s put our hearts in our prayers and do all we can to reach out to these people and to God to make all of this growth possible.
More than ever, God’s Spirit is moving things ahead in the Living Church of God. But we must become filled with zeal and a genuine passion for God as we ask for His extra help, His love and His faith that we may “be strong and carry out great exploits” as Christ leads the way (Daniel 11:32).
Church Administration
Greetings from Charlotte,
Thank you very much for your prayers! Last Saturday and Sunday, 81 visitors attended the two Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations held in Thomasville, Georgia and Lake City, Florida (see report below). It was very exciting to make the presentations and talk with visitors and brethren in these two locations—as well as make a number of visits on this trip. Mr. Rod McNair also had very positive visits last Sabbath with the congregations in Atlanta and Braselton, Georgia. This week, Mr. Meredith has been writing and holding meetings and preparing to tape a new Tomorrow’s World program. Mr. Charles Ogwyn reported that last Saturday, nearly 6,000 visitors contacted the Tomorrow’s World website, www.TomorrowsWorld.org, and Mr. Wayne Pyle reports that Mr. Ames’ television program last weekend entitled, “Heaven, Hell, and the Resurrection” drew more than 4,200 responses. Registration is still open for Living University classes that will begin on August 16 (see announcement below). On August 3, the Living Youth Teen Camp will begin for ten days in Pennsylvania. The first Living Youth Camp in the United Kingdom will begin this Sunday, August 1. Your prayers for good weather and a successful camp will be much appreciated. Please read the warning about Internet postings below (Facebook, Twitter, etc.).
Thomasville and Lake City Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations
Mr. Joe Brown reports: What a wonderful Sabbath we had in Thomasville, Georgia! The 28 members and 30 guests were excited to hear Dr. Winnail’s informative presentation of “What’s Ahead for America?” On Sunday in Lake City, Florida, where about 22 people had pre-registered for the presentation, there were already new people waiting to get in when Dr. Winnail and I arrived more than an hour before the presentation was to begin. By the time the presentation began, a total of 51 visitors and 28 members were on hand to hear the TWSP. It was very encouraging to see that God does hear and answer our prayers. We really appreciate the help and support of Headquarters in making these TWSPs possible, as well as the opportunity to work together in these exciting programs.
Australasia Update
Mr. Bruce Tyler reports: The responses to the Tomorrow’s World program, especially in New Zealand, are doing quite well and Mr. Penman is really kept very busy with good growth. Here in Australia, the Community stations we are on are still in a transitional period from analogue to digital and, consequently, there has been a noticeable downturn in viewership. We pray this situation is only temporary and we will begin to see increased viewership very soon. Nevertheless, we continue to receive requests from individuals for more information and ministerial visits. On my recent visit to the Church in Papua New Guinea, I was accompanied by Mr. Graeme Hemphill, the Sydney Area Pastor. I’ve asked Mr Hemphill to help oversee Papua New Guinea and to assist Mr. Peter Devis who is our local minister in that country.
Warning About Internet Postings (Facebook, Twitter, etc)
We have previously warned that posting personal information (pictures, travel plans, home addresses phone numbers, etc.) on the Internet can lead to serious and unwanted consequences. Now, we have been informed that criminals are befriending people on the Internet and learning when people will be away from home, then burglarizing the homes. Be careful and use wisdom about what you disclose on the Internet—you have may no idea who may be reading what you post.
Living University
Fall Semester 2010 Registration
There are just two weeks left before the beginning of Living University’s Fall semester, and space is still available in most of our classes. This week we highlight two more courses being offered this semester. Take advantage of the opportunity to develop greater spiritual understanding by enrolling in one of the courses offered by LU this Fall. This week we are highlighting THL 460—Contemporary World Religions and THL 473—Archaeology and the Old Testament. For more information and to register for classes, visit us online at www.livinguniv.com or call Dr. Scott Winnail at 704-805-2292.
THL 460—Contemporary World Religions
At a time in Church history when God is calling people from diverse religious backgrounds and in a society abounding with religious “tolerance,” it is helpful to more clearly understand why and how true Christianity is unique from other world religions. This course is an introduction to the major religious traditions of the world, particularly Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, and Islam. It also briefly reviews the neo-pagan and cultic phenomena in the contemporary world. Emphasis is on the historical development, key figures, as well as major doctrines and practices of other major world religions. Upon completion of the course, students should have a working knowledge of the similarities and differences between the world’s religions and how they differ from true Christianity.
THL 473—Archaeology and the Old Testament
This course deals with the archaeology of the Bible Lands from the fourth millennium before Christ through the Intertestamental Period. Topics addressed include patriarchal Palestine, Joseph and Moses in Egypt, the reigns of David and Solomon, the divided kingdoms of Israel and Judah, the exile to Assyria and Babylon, and the intertestamental period—the time between the writing of the books of Malachi and Matthew. Student learning will focus on understanding the social, political and religious background of the biblical world and how this helps illuminate the books of the Old Testament.
Living Youth Camp
Teen Camp 2010—Pennsylvania
Living Youth Camp at Raccoon Creek State Park is right around the corner, with staff orientation on Sunday, August 1, and camp beginning on Tuesday, August 3. Some have asked if we have an address to use for sending letters or care packages to camp. Please use the following address: Name of Camper (or Staff member), Living Church of God, c/o Raccoon Creek State Park, 3000 State Route 18, Hookstown, PA 15050-9416.
Teen Camp—United Kingdom
The inaugural Living Youth Summer Camp for the U.K. and Europe gets under way this Sunday, August 1, and will run for one week. We are starting with a modest number of six boys and six girls. It will be held at the United Kingdom Regional Office in Boughton, Northamptonshire. We plan to find a larger site next year so we will be able to invite more of our young people. For our first camp, Mr. Rees Ellis will be Camp Director with the assistance of Mr. John Meakin who has more than 30 years of summer camp experience in the United Kingdom. Mr. Stafford will also assist with an orienteering type activity as well as some career guidance. Mrs. Ellis will use her expertise in nature watching so the campers can be more aware of the animals and birds in Britain. The boys’ counselor will be Jamie Meakin and the girls will be led by Carolyn Vahgi.
Feast of Tabernacles 2010
Blessing of the Little Children
As is our tradition, we will again be having the blessing of the little children this year during the Feast of Tabernacles. This is following the example of Jesus Christ who, when little children were brought to Him, took them up in His arms and blessed them (Mark 10:13-16). If you have little children who have not yet been blessed and will be taking part, please contact the coordinator of the site where you will be attending to inform him and to find out on which day of the Feast the blessing will take place. This will give the coordinator an idea of how many will be taking part in this meaningful observance at his Feast site. If you have any questions about the blessing of the little children, please contact your local pastor.
Sabbath after the Feast
With the Feast ending on a Thursday this year (September 30), some have inquired about whether there will be Sabbath services on October 2 at/near the Feast site where they will be attending. Our coordinators are attempting to contact all of the registered brethren at their site to find out who might be interested in staying over for the Sabbath. If you are interested in staying over and observing the Sabbath of October 2 at/near your Feast site, please contact your coordinator right away. He may be able to make plans to have Sabbath services on October 2, if there is enough interest. If you don’t know who the coordinator is for your site, check the MyLCG website (www.cogl.org) under your site’s write-up.
Anchorage, Alaska
The Feast in Alaska this year is shaping up to be a good one. An important e-mail was sent last week to all members registered for the Feast in Alaska, but apparently some people are still not receiving e-mails from the Alaska coordinator. Please go to the www.fotalaska.com website to read the new information. All of the details on activities are now posted, as well as a form you will need to fill out and send in with your payment. There is also some important information posted regarding housing.
Llangollen, Wales, United Kingdom
Music and Entertainment: We need urgently to know the names of all those who wish to contribute to special music at the Feast of Tabernacles in Llangollen, those who would like to assist with piano accompaniment during services, and those who would like to sing in either the main choir or the children’s choir. All these areas will be supervised once more by V.G. Larde from France (vg@vglarde.net). Please communicate directly with V.G. Larde and/or John Meakin (jmeakin@lcg.org) as soon as possible, if you can serve in these areas. We are also planning a Family Entertainment Evening later in the Feast under the supervision of Steve Bode (sbode@kc.rr.com). If anyone has items of entertainment that could be performed on that evening, please inform Steve and we will audition those items in the first part of the Feast.
Comments
The Value of Education: Over the years, some have concluded that worldly education is of little value to true Christians. Since Satan is the god of this world, and Christians are to come out of this world (2 Corinthians 4:4; 6:14-18), some have assumed that getting an education in this world is ungodly and/or a waste of time. Such ideas overlook the fact that God used individuals in powerful ways who were schooled in this world. Moses was raised as a prince in Egypt and was “learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians” (Acts 7:22). Solomon was knowledgeable in many areas—including botany, zoology and human relations—and he collected wise sayings in the book of Proverbs (1 Kings 4:32-34). Daniel was one of a group of intelligent young Jewish captives who were educated in Babylon before they were used by God (Daniel 1:3-4). Paul studied at the feet of Gamaliel, the leading rabbi of his day, before being used by God to write 14 books in the New Testament. Numerous studies show that more education can result in higher incomes that can enable Christians to provide better for their families. Christians who understand the Truth of God and the Plan of God should take advantage of opportunities to gain an education that will help them prepare to serve others in the coming Kingdom of God. This is one of the reasons why the Living Church of God has developed Living University—to help God’s people prepare for the future!
Have a profitable Sabbath,
Douglas S. Winnail
News and Prophecy—July 29, 2010
Leaders Exploit People they Claim to Serve. Recently, many community leaders of Bell, a small city southwest of Los Angeles, resigned due to press coverage that exposed their highly inflated salaries. Bell’s City Manager made nearly $800,000 last year—almost twice the salary of President Barack Obama. The police chief made more than $450,000—50% more than the chief of the Los Angeles Police Department. City council members working only part-time earned an annual salary in excess of $100,000. Yet, last week, the town’s mayor defended the salaries as being “in line with similar positions” in other communities. Town residents were understandably outraged, knowing their high taxes are used to support the extravagant salaries of so-called “public servants” (Associated Press, July 27, 2010). The prophecies of Ezekiel 34 primarily refer to corrupt religious leaders, but those same prophecies accurately describe the activities of many civic leaders today. While the above article refers to a situation near Los Angeles, the same scenario is played out by leaders all around the globe. Ezekiel was told, “Woe to the shepherds of Israel who feed themselves! Should not the shepherds feed the flocks? You eat the fat and clothe yourselves with the wool; you slaughter the fatlings, but you do not feed the flock… with force and cruelty you have ruled them’” (Ezekiel 34:2-4). God foresaw that the end of the age would bring with it rampant greed and a focus on self. Today, people are lovers of themselves and lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God (2 Timothy 3:1-4). God speed the day when people will rejoice because of their righteous leaders (Proverbs 29:2).
Iran’s Nuclear Potential. Shahram Amiri, the U.S.’s nuclear scientist contact from Iran, voluntarily returned to Iran last week to a hero’s welcome. This action prompted the U.S. government to determine that their “inside source” for Iranian nuclear information was really an Iranian spy and double agent. One “Iranian official called him a clever spy who had managed to infiltrate U.S. intelligence and deceive them for years.” Now, most of the data reported by Mr. Amiri is considered invalid. As a result, a high ranking U.S. intelligence official commented that “if we woke up one morning to find the Iranians had conducted an underground nuclear test” we should not be surprised. He also commented that Iran is “a lot” further along in its nuclear development than first thought. Iran is now forecasted to have “nuclear test capability” by the end of 2010, as opposed to one or more years from now (DEBKA, July 19, 2010). Although a nuclear-armed Iran appears very worrisome on the surface, God’s word reveals that Assyria/Germany (not Iran) will be the rod of God’s anger and the staff of His indignation (Isaiah 10:5-7). Germany will lead a charge of European “beast” kingdoms and eventually occupy Jerusalem along with a great mother church. While Iran is currently in the “mix” of Middle-Eastern nations, it will most likely not lead the final king of the South nations. For more information on this topic, see our booklet The Middle East in Prophecy.
Vatican Reaches Out to Europe. The last few decades have seen double-digit growth in the number of Catholics around the globe, while mass attendance numbers in Europe have plummeted. Now, the Vatican has created the Pontifical Council for Evangelization to focus its recruitment efforts in Europe. “The pope is motivated by a deep concern that Europe’s spiritual foundation is slipping away, taking with it the continent’s future, both earthly and eternal.” The pope realizes that the future unification of European nations cannot happen outside of the “faith.” So, the current pope is holding true to the aims of his predecessor, helping regain “the Christian [Catholic] roots of Europe and its Christian [Catholic] soul” (ForeignPolicy.com, July 27, 2010). Bible prophecy makes clear that religion will be the glue that binds the final ten “iron and clay” kingdoms of the Beast power (Daniel 2:40-45; Revelation 17). Is it any coincidence that the Vatican is pushing hard to reignite the Catholic faith in Europe at this vital point in prophecy? We should look for the Vatican—the Pope and the Catholic Church—to play an increasing role in European politics in the future.—Scott Winnail and Annette Wright
The World Ahead Weekly Update 7/24
Greetings from Charlotte,
We have more very encouraging news to report this week! More than 120 visitors attended last weekend’s follow-up Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations (TWSPs)—50 in Dallas, Texas; 54 in Trinidad; and 20 in Roanoke, Virginia (see reports below). More than 6,000 calls have been received for last weekend’s Tomorrow’s World program by Mr. Wallace Smith titled “Seven Signs of the Antichrist,” which offered the booklet Who or What Is the Antichrist? We have also been notified that Mr. Ames’ Tomorrow’s World telecast titled “You Can Understand Prophecy” has received an award (see below). Mr. Rod McNair reports that Church attendance in both the USA and International areas for June was 9-10% higher than a year ago. Mr. Ruddlesden also reports that the year-to-date income is running just ahead of the projected income—for which we are very thankful. This week Mr. Meredith has been writing and holding a number of meetings. Dr. Scott Winnail has retuned to Charlotte after very positive visits to congregations in Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad. Mr. Sheldon Monson reports that the Adventure Program backpacking trip in the Rocky Mountain National Park went very well—the excitement included braving a sudden snowstorm and close-up views of elk in the wild! This weekend I will be heading south to conduct TWSPs in Thomasville, Georgia and Lake City, Florida. We greatly appreciate the efforts that local congregations are making to organize and support the TWSPs. Please continue to pray that God will bless these efforts to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world.
Church Administration
Dallas Tomorrow’s World Follow-up Special Presentation
Mr. Gary Stein reports: We had a total attendance of 120 for Mr. Dan Hall’s follow-up Special Presentation in Dallas last Sabbath. There were 50 Tomorrow’s World subscribers, including 20 first-time attendees. Mr. Hall delivered a powerful message regarding “Where Is the Church that Jesus Christ Built?” and talked about the characteristics that make up the real Church of God. Many commented on how friendly and welcoming the members were and that they planned to attend next Sabbath! Afterwards, guests stayed and enjoyed refreshments and fellowship for another two hours, obviously excited about hearing the Truth and identity of the real Church of God—what a great day!
Roanoke Follow-up Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation
Mr. Paul Shumway reports: We had 20 guests and 30 members for a total of 50 in attendance. Thirteen of the guests attended the first presentation and seven came for the first time. Three men drove three hours to attend! We announced Sabbath services at 10:00 a.m. at the same location. Three or four said they planned to come. Others said they might… fifteen members are planning to attend. I want to add the comments that Mr. Sam Shrader sent me: “What a wonderful day! Twenty guests were present… Most listened intently and followed along in their Bibles as the characteristics of God’s true Church were expounded. The message was received with much interest and excitement… Several expressed an interest in attending services this Sabbath! The 30 brethren present were once again encouraged by witnessing God’s Spirit at work!”
Trinidad Follow-up Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation
Dr. Scott Winnail reports: The trip to Trinidad was a profitable and blessed one by God. Last Sabbath was excellent and we continued with Mr. Ames’ trend of setting records in that we had a “new” record attendance of 110 for services. The follow-up Special Presentation also went very well. We had 54 “new” attendees—that is “non-members.” By a show of hands, I would guess that more than 50% of these were at Mr. Ames’ presentation on Sunday, July 11. In addition, we had 87 members present—for a total of 143 total attendees. A number of us had conversations with individuals who have a sincere interest in at least visiting us on a future Sabbath. We also may have some who may return to our fellowship after these presentations. God willing, He will spiritually protect these individuals as they attempt to further align their lives with Him.
Blessing of Children Miracle
Mr. Paul Shumway reports: This week we saw a powerful demonstration of the results of the “Blessing of Little Children.” Our daughter, Tammy Loy, took her children swimming. Kaylen (almost two) recently learned to go down the seven-foot waterslide by herself. Tammy was standing next to the slide and watching as her daughter reached the top. Suddenly, Kaylen slipped and fell toward the concrete deck seven feet below. Mommy saw her baby fall in slow motion. As she reached out to catch her, to her dismay, she saw Kaylen slowly slip between her hands and land face down on the concrete. Horrified, with a sick feeling in the pit of her stomach, she was afraid to pick her daughter up and face the damage. Dutifully, she did so. Kaylen cried for a short time, but didn’t appear to be seriously hurt. Except for a miniscule spot of blood in her mouth, there was no damage—no broken teeth, no broken nose, no cut lip, no concussion, no scratches, bruises or anything! Within a short time, Kaylen was back to the slide—this time holding Mommy’s hand! There was no doubt that those present had just witnessed a divine miracle!
London Church Picnic
Mr. Rick Stafford reports: On Sunday, July 18, the combined London congregations enjoyed their first annual summer picnic. Members and guests rejoiced as the families played, ate and fellowshipped for five hours in London’s beautiful Waterloo Park. Friendly competition included a giant jump rope contest (record 65 jumps!), bean bag horse shoes, volleyball and badminton. Everyone was so enthusiastic that the London congregation is already planning to sponsor another picnic at the end of the summer.
Visit to Peru
In late June, Puerto Rican elder Raúl Colón visited congregations in Peru. He met with brethren in Lima on the evening of June 24, before baptizing Mr. Rafael Pareja in the Rimac River the following morning and heading to Cerro de Pasco with four other members to conduct Sabbath services on June 25. Sixty members were in attendance, including children. Some had traveled from Lima, Huancayo, Tactayoc and Ambo to hear the good news that Mr. Colón delivered through an inspiring sermon. After services, the brethren enjoyed a meal together and in the evening Mr. Colón performed the wedding of Josmel Palma and Esther Bravo. The celebration had 450 guests and it lasted until 5:00 in the morning! On Sunday, Mr. Colón visited with brethren from Ambo, Huancayo and Tactayoc until noon, before returning to Lima. On June 28, Mr. Colón flew back to Puerto Rico.

Focus will be placed on the growth and development of professing Christianity during the early centuries in the Mediterranean World as well as its expansion into Europe and the East.
THL 427—Working with Christian Youth
This course deals with developing, organizing, and coordinating Church youth programs. Emphasis is on the development of Christian values in youth and adolescents. Additional focus will be placed on understanding how to effectively work with, encourage, and motivate the youth.
Living Youth Camp
Teen Camp 2010—Pennsylvania
We are in the final preparations for Living Youth Camp 2010. All campers, parents and staff: please review your packing lists and make sure that you have submitted all your paperwork. We will be having an overnight “adventure hike.” It would be useful to bring a day pack along for that trip. For other packing reminders and information on “all things camp,” go to www.livingyouth.org today. See you soon!—Jonathan McNair
Adventure Program 2010—Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado
Twenty-eight campers and staff members participated in the Rocky Mountain National Park Adventure Program July 6-15, 2010. We spent five days in the backcountry, including a day of rest, complete with Sabbath Services. We began this challenging 40-mile backpacking trip at Bear Lake Trailhead (9,475 ft). From there, we climbed the steep ascent up and over the top of Flattop Mountain Trail (12,324 ft) before dropping down the other side on our way to Grand Lake (8,540 ft). Once we arrived at Grand Lake, it was time to circle around and hike back across the park, and up and over the steep pass once again, before descending back down to Bear Lake. The adventure included hiking in a snowstorm at 12,000 feet; hail, rain, thunder, lightning, and sunshine. We viewed and photographed several moose, herds of elk, fox, marmots, and rainbow trout. The clear mountain streams, waterfalls, and cascades were spectacular! The final two days of camp included fabulous weather for whitewater rafting, and the 29-mile mountain biking trip down trail ridge road. We thank God for His protection and for giving us strength to accomplish this tough and demanding adventure! Campers and staff: We would appreciate having digital copies of your photographs to post on the youth website. Please send your photographs to smonson@lcg.org. Stay tuned for next adventure!—Sheldon Monson
Feast of Tabernacles 2010
Coordinators Meeting
The Festival Office, in conjunction with the IT department, conducted a successful Web meeting on Wednesday, July 21, with coordinators from around the world. CAD Director, Dr. Douglas Winnail, opened the meeting reminding the coordinators to focus on the meaning of the Feast as they make preparations. Budget policies and deadlines were also discussed, as well as ideas on how to use the Feast to teach parents to guide and educate their children. The coordinators also reviewed policies in the Festival Coordinators manual, discussing specific situations and how to handle them effectively. It was exciting and inspiring to see 18 coordinators from six different countries—the United States, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Trinidad and Tobago, Canada, and Australia—see and hear each other through the Internet, though states, countries, and even (in some cases) oceans apart!
Speaking Schedules
Feast of Tabernacles speaking schedules were reviewed last Thursday morning by Dr. Roderick C. Meredith for final edits and approval. After we make the final last-minute edits, we should be able to send the speaking schedules to those concerned.
Panama City, Florida
For brethren attending the Feast of Tabernacles in Panama City: the activity ticket order form is now online! Send in your order soon, because some activities have limited space available. Branson, Missouri
Festival Music Help: Our expected attendance in Branson has grown to 600 people, but we do not have many volunteers for musical service! We still need volunteers to serve as Choir Director, Children’s Choir Director, and piano players. Also, if anyone is interested in performing special music, joining the Festival chorale, or serving musically at one of our luncheons, please contact us, as well. Media
I am happy to announce that Mr. Richard Ames’ Tomorrow’s World telecast titled, “You Can Understand Prophecy,” has been awarded the Aurora Platinum Best of Show / Competition Award from the 2010 Aurora Film & Television Awards. This is the highest award that the Aurora Awards presents. In fact, according to the numbers from the Aurora Awards, only a very small percentage of the entries received are judged, and awarded at the Platinum level. Congratulations to the presenters of the Tomorrow’s World Television Program—Dr. Meredith, Mr. Ames, Mr. Wallace Smith and Mr. Rod King on their Platinum Aurora win! While we are not doing the Work for human awards, it’s nice to have an independent, professional panel of judges working in the film and television industry, gauge the overall impact and quality of our telecast. The judging committee actually made notes complimenting the effectiveness of the program, calling it “excellent” three times. We know that any excellence with the telecast comes from He who is The Most Excellent—God! We know that God is guiding His Work through correct government, and the tremendous leadership He has chosen—under Jesus Christ and Dr. Meredith. Time is short brethren, and the time is now—let’s fully surrender to God and His will, and let’s finish the Work while it’s still day!—Thomas Baca II

The Importance of Wisdom: Solomon wrote that of all the things we gain in this life, “wisdom is the principal thing” (Proverbs 4:7). The Bible reveals that wisdom “is more precious than rubies” because it leads to real happiness and a long and honorable life (Proverbs 3:13-16). Jesus Christ applied this instruction as He grew to manhood, because we are told in the Scriptures that as He grew up, He “increased in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and men” (Luke 2:52). The Apostle Paul urged Christians to use wisdom when dealing with other people (Colossians 4:5-6). While we can learn lessons from the school of hard knocks, there really is a better way to learn! The key to gaining wisdom is to learn to fear God and live by every word of God (Proverbs 1:7; 9:10). We are instructed in the Scriptures to ask God for wisdom (James 1:5-7), to seek wisdom by studying His word daily (Deuteronomy 4:1-10; 2 Timothy 3:15) and listen to older and wiser people (Proverbs 10:1; 15:7; 18:15; 22:17). If we follow these instructions, we will become more like Jesus Christ and our wise and loving Father in heaven (Romans 16:27).

News and Prophecy—July 22, 2010
Britain Returning Home. Britain currently maintains 140 embassies and “high commissions” in nations and principalities throughout the globe. Although many of Britain’s former colonies have been sovereign nations for decades, Britain has maintained prime real estate in these nations through tiny tracts of land that are technically “British soil”–in the form of embassies and high commissions. Faced with mounting deficits, the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office may need to cut its budget by up to 40% over the next four years. Thus, many of Britain’s embassies or high commissions will be either paired down or completely closed, greatly reducing Britain’s international presence. Consulates are vital for securing trade and investments and also for protecting British citizens around the globe. But, under new EU regulations, many of these historically sovereign responsibilities are being handed over to Brussels. Plans are also being made to sell or lease many of these embassies and residences (Times, July 15, 2010). Britain once claimed that the sun never set on her empire, and embassies have kept that claim still partially alive. However with their close and sale, Bible prophecies continue to be fulfilled. God blessed the descendants of Joseph (Ephraim and Manasseh) who became a fruitful vine whose branches trailed over the wall and whose influence spread around the world (Genesis 49:22). We are now witnessing the sobering removal of this influence, as “high places” and “high commissions” are lost—because the Israelite nations have turned their back on God and His commandments (Leviticus 26:14-30).
China Oil Spill. Oil began spilling into the Yellow Sea late last week due to a burst oil pipeline in the port city of Dalian, China. Initial reports estimated the flow to contain 400,000 gallons—considerably smaller than the BP situation in the Gulf of Mexico, but large enough to prompt scientists to suggest major environmental implications. Experts now appear uncertain about the actual amount of oil spilled. Dozens of oil skimmers have worked to clean up the oil. Hundreds of fishing vessels have also been armed with straw mats to absorb the oil. Some eyewitnesses described the oil slick as “…half-solid and half liquid and is as sticky as asphalt” (Associated Press, July 21, 2010). Although China’s spill is far smaller than the on-going Gulf oil spill, it still harms God’s creation. Photos from the spill punctuate the Apostle Paul’s observation regarding the current state of the suffering creation “…because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now” (Romans 8:20-23). Mankind continues to demonstrate poor stewardship and lack of respect for the creation over which God gave us dominion in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 1:28). God speed the day when Christ and His saints will rule the earth and usher in a time of righteous government that truly cares for the creation as God intended from the start.
Egyptian Water Wars Continue. For some time, nations with expanding populations that border the Nile River have wrestled over rights to its life-giving waters. Until recently, Egypt has threatened military action against the upstream nations of Sudan and Ethiopia if they attempt to reduce the flow of water coming to Egypt. Recently, Egypt took this so-called “nuclear option” off the table and stated they want to work with other nations to reach agreement, offering aid in order to cool tensions. Egypt is also trying to work with Sudan in order to capture more water that the two nations are currently losing due to faulty systems (Al-Ahram Weekly Online, July 8-14, 2010). However, Bible prophecies describe Egypt’s water supply from the Nile River being cut off. Isaiah foretold, “the river will be wasted and dried up… And everything sown by the River will wither, be driven away and be no more. The fishermen also will morn…” (Isaiah 19:4-10). This event could occur due to drought, but as we are seeing, God may use other nations to punish Egypt at the end of the age.—Scott Winnail, Jim and Sue Bennett
The World Ahead Weekly Update 7/17
Greetings from Charlotte –
This has been a very positive week for God’s Work! Last weekend, Mr. Meredith made a Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation (TWSP) to an audience of 284 people in Dallas that included 150 “new” people. On Sunday in Trinidad, Mr. Ames spoke to an audience that included 244 visitors and nearly 80 brethren. The same day in Roanoke, Virginia, I spoke to an audience of 73 that included 42 visitors (see reports below). Mr. Wyatt Ciesielka also made a follow-up TWSP in Mountain View, Arkansas that has attracted a number of new people. All told, about 440 new people attended TWSPs last Saturday and Sunday. Your prayers will be appreciated for follow-up presentations in Dallas, Trinidad and Roanoke this Saturday and Sunday. It is also encouraging to note that we are expecting more than 5,200 responses to Mr. Meredith’s television broadcast last weekend, titled “How Does Satan Deceive You?” This week a number of individuals from the Canadian office were in Charlotte to tape new television programs. Mr. Gerald Weston taped several new television programs for future international airing, and Mr. Brochu taped pilot French language programs. Dr. Scott Winnail is currently visiting congregations in Jamaica and Barbados and will make a follow-up TWSP in Trinidad this Sunday. Please note the announcements below about Living University and the Panama City Feast site.
Church Administration
Dallas Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation
Mr. Dan Hall reports: We had a total attendance of 284 for Dr. Meredith’s Special Presentation in Dallas last Sabbath, in spite of rainy and overcast weather leading up to the weekend! And within that number, we counted 150 Tomorrow’s World subscribers. The message of “What’s Ahead for America?” brought obvious agreement and audible “amens” according to one of our ushers. Afterwards, people gathered around to greet Dr. and Mrs. Meredith and ask questions. And, most of the guests stayed for a banquet of beautifully prepared refreshments and fellowship. And, due to the number of those who did “stick around,” we expect some will attend the follow-up presentation this coming Sabbath, July 17.
Roanoke Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation
Mr. Paul Shumway reports: The Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation last Sunday went extremely well. Forty-two subscribers attended along with 31 members. The 73 of us filled the room with only a few seats to spare! Some came from more than two hours away, including North Carolina! Bluefield deacon, Mr. Sam Shrader, commented: “One could sense God’s Holy Spirit working in creating a welcoming atmosphere. There was a great deal of excitement among the guests about finding a church that taught God’s truth. Many expressed a desire to attend the next presentation and to learn more about God’s way of life. The 31 brethren present were encouraged by witnessing God’s blessing on the meeting and the possibility of a new congregation being established in the area. It was truly an inspiring day!”
Port-of-Spain Tomorrow’s World Special Presentation
Mr. Richard Ames’ Special Presentation in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, last Sunday was a success with 244 subscribers and 76 members in attendance! The previous day, there were 109 in attendance for Sabbath services—a new record! Mr. Fitzroy Greeman and Mr. Ames ordained Mr. Darrien Weeks as an elder, and Messrs. David Grant and Mr. Keith Sookdeo as deacons. Mr. Ames reported that, “the Trinidad Choir sang special music and was outstanding. Food and fellowship continued past the noon hour to 2:30 p.m. and beyond.”
East Africa Update
Mr. Simon Muthama reports: I am back from a two-week trip to Musoma, Kisorya and Ukerewe in Tanzania, where I had gone to serve the Great Commission. The Work continues to bear fruit in East Africa. It is encouraging to find that our congregation in Ukerewe has grown rapidly from 12 to 47 brethren (26 adults and 21 children). Our host there, Mr. Ezekiel Mukama, and his wife Laurencia Mukama are doing a fine job. The members are responding to God’s way of “give.”
Jamaica Update
Dr. Scott Winnail reports: In Jamaica, we had a record attendance of 108 last Sabbath! Fellowship was rich and deep and lasted 3 ¾ hours following services. What a wonderful and encouraging day. “Feast fever” is starting to set in in Jamaica!
Basa Fish
Some of our Church members might not be familiar with Basa fish (also known as “panga” or “river cobbler”) that has, in the last few years, entered the market in Europe and North America. This fish is farmed and imported from Asia. It is a type of catfish and, therefore, unclean and unfit for human consumption according to the Scriptures (see Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14). Additionally, Basa is farmed in one of the most polluted rivers in the world and under very unsanitary practices (see www.vimeo.com/11817894).

Feast of Tabernacles 2010
Panama City, Florida
Daily reports in the various media paint a grim picture of the Gulf Coast giving the impression that the coastline is fouled with oil from Louisiana to Florida. In fact, as bad as it is, only a small part of the coast has been damaged in any way. The marsh areas and coastal wetlands of Louisiana have been damaged, but these areas are distant from the resort and vacation areas farther to the East. If someone is a shrimp fisherman, an oysterman or an offshore oil worker, it is devastating. However, these matters should not affect our Feast site in Panama City, Florida.
Mr. Jack Lowe, Festival Site Coordinator for Panama City, has visited the area within the past few days and has physically inspected the areas where Festival activities will be held. He reports that everything is normal. The beaches are beautiful and the water is fine. While he was there, people were enjoying the beach, swimming, wading, etc.
It is 68 days until the beginning of the Feast, so conditions can change. However, the official observer and people on the ground in the Panama City areas are very optimistic that all will be well in September.
More than 1,000 people have registered for the Feast of Tabernacles in Panama City, and it is our sincere hope that everyone will come and have an enjoyable Feast in every way. However, if any of our brethren are not comfortable with the situation, some of our other sites have ample room, while others are at capacity.
Branson, Missouri; Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin; New Braunfels, Texas; and Prescott, Arizona can accept more attendees. Helen, Georgia; Cobleskill, New York; and Newport, Oregon are at capacity and are unable to accommodate any more attendees. We hope this information will answer many of the questions and concerns of our members.—Davy Crockett

Humility—Key to Unity: David wrote, “How good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity” (Psalm 133:1). The Apostle Paul urged Christians to “walk worthy” of their calling “with all lowliness and gentleness… endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:1-3). He stated that the work of the ministry is to edify (build up) the body (the Church) “till we all come to the unity of the faith” (Ephesians 4:12-13). Paul also told contentious Corinthians that they should be “perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment” (1 Corinthians 1:10). But what causes contentions that disrupt unity? The Scriptures reveal that pride is an underlying cause of contentions (Proverbs 13:10) and that pride will contribute to a person’s downfall and destruction (Proverbs 16:18). Insisting on doing things our own way also causes dissentions and strife (James 4:1). However, humility will eventually bring a person honor (Proverbs 15:33; 29:23) and will promote peace and unity (James 3:17-18). Jesus Christ was of “one mind” with His Father (John 10:30), and He was exalted because He humbled Himself and followed His Father’s instructions (Philippians 2:5-9). As Christians, we are encouraged to be subject to government (within and without the Church) and not to resist authority (Romans 13:1-2), to treat each other with respect, to be humble and not conceited about your own opinions (Romans 12:10-18). As we develop and learn to exercise this kind of humility, we will promote unity.

News and Prophecy—July 15, 2010
EU Edges Out Britain. On July 15, 2010, the British government announced that many of its 140 embassies and high commissions will close or be pared down due to budget cuts as Britain scales back its overseas presence. Work carried on by British consular posts in Europe will be handed over to EU personnel appointed from Brussels (The Times, July 15, 2010). A Brussels announcement stated the “EU is to be given similar rights and powers to a fully fledged nation state in the United Nations general assembly” (The Daily Telegraph, July 15, 2010). This will mean that “Europe’s desk will be moved from the margins, where it sits with organizations such as NATO’s parliamentary body, near to the centre of the UN’s assembly chamber” (ibid). The British Foreign Secretary, William Hague, has expressed concerns that the EU could use its more prominent position and expanding foreign policy powers “to undermine Britain’s role on the UN Security Council.” Another observer states, “This is the thin end of the wedge. How long before David Cameron concedes our seat at the UN Security Council?” (ibid). Long ago, God foretold the demise of His chosen people and their loss of influence at the end of the age due to their rejection of His ways, “The alien who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower…he shall be the head, and you shall be the tail” (Deuteronomy 28:43-44). We are watching this take place right in front of our eyes today!
Teenagers’ Faith on the Decline. In a recent study of U.S. teenagers, the Barna Group determined that over the last decade, faith among teens has been declining. Small group discussions, Sunday school attendance, prayer, Bible reading, church donations, and personal evangelism all seem to be on the decline. Researchers suggest that many teens have engaged in church-related activities primarily for social opportunities. With new technologies such as texting and computer-based social networking, researchers observed a sobering possibility: “Talking to God may be losing out to Facebook.” The research also indicates that societal pressure against asserting one’s faith may be the reason why fewer teens are willing to talk about their faith with unbelievers (www.barna.org, July 12, 2010). Parents are commanded by God to educate their children throughout the day and make the home an environment where God’s Way is continually practiced (Deuteronomy 6:7-9). As we approach the end of the age, fewer and fewer parents are educating their children about the Bible. At the same time, society is demonizing Bible study and labeling adherence to biblical principles as bigoted and prejudiced. However, other studies show that teens desire truthful and intelligent answers. God’s word is truth (John 17:17) and children need to be taught from it so that when they become teenagers, they have strong faith that will shield them from the fiery darts and lies of the wicked one (Ephesians 6:16).
Views on Abortion. Views on abortion differ widely and an increasing number of Americans are “unsure” how they feel about the issue. Those with the highest levels of income and education, and who are least religious are most likely to support abortion. In fact, the less religious, the more supportive—atheists and agnostics are most in favor of abortion. Interestingly, the baby boomer generation (age 45-63) is most likely to be uncertain of its views on abortion. There is also a relationship between one’s faith in the Bible and opposition to abortion in any circumstance—the more closely aligned with Scripture one’s faith is, the more likely one is to oppose abortion. Another interesting fact is that those in the younger generation (18-44) are far more likely to have a strong belief about abortion when compared to their “uncertain” parents. The younger generations of conservative Christians are just as likely to oppose abortion as the older generation (over age 64) (www.barna.org, June 14, 2010). Research speaks to the importance of Bible-based education. As we educate our children in God’s ways, they will grow up knowing the answers to hard questions and be willing to hold fast to truth. This research also supports the Proverb, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). While critics might say that biblically-oriented children are “indoctrinated,” more objective persons will ask whether those “in favor” of abortion have even been exposed to the reasons against it.—Scott Winnail and James Ginn
The World Ahead Weekly Update 6/10
Greetings from Charlotte,
This Saturday and Sunday, we will hold three Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations. Mr. Meredith will speak in Dallas, Texas; Mr. Ames will speak in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad; and I will make a presentation in the Roanoke, Virginia area. This week, Mr. Sheldon Monson and his staff are leading a backpacking trip out of Estes Park, Colorado, for Living Church of God young people participating in the Rocky Mountain Adventure Program. Your prayers for the success of these activities will be greatly appreciated. Mr. Wayne Pyle reports that Mr. Ames’ Tomorrow’s World television program, titled “Teach Me to Pray,” is expected to generate about 4,600 responses. Last weekend, my wife and I visited the congregation in Akron, Ohio and also attended the 50th Reunion of my high school graduating class. It was good to reconnect with men and women that I had not seen in decades and to listen to the experiences and lessons that many have learned over the span of 50 years. Mr. and Mrs. Crockett also returned safely after a visit with congregations and family in the “Promised Land” of Arkansas! Please remember that requests for Second Tithe assistance for the Feast are due in Charlotte by July 15.

Columbia Third Annual Music Weekend
The Columbia, Missouri, congregation invites you to attend its third Annual Music Weekend from Friday, September 3, through Monday, September 6. We will have a Bible Study, Sabbath Services, and lots of music and singing; so come on out and camp or, if you prefer to stay at a nearby motel, they are available also. We also invite any singers and musicians who would like to participate. The costs remain the same as last year, very reasonable for the whole weekend. Please register by August 1, at our website www.eastmissourilcg.org (not an official Church website), where you can also find more details on the weekend.—Bill Oswald
Rocky Mountain Saratoga Family Weekend
The 12th annual Rocky Mountain Saratoga Family Weekend held on June 25-27 was a big success. Forty-five area brethren and guests had a wonderful time worshiping God and fellowshipping on the banks of the North Platte River in beautiful Saratoga, Wyoming. Delightful partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the mid 70s to low 80s greeted everyone with light Wyoming breezes. It was a magnificent weekend!
Friday evening, June 25 opened the 12th annual weekend. First, we were all invited to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Pete and Jen Maskell for a delicious Friday evening supper before heading over to the Bible Study on “Leadership Secrets from the Bible,” by Mr. Ben Whitfield. Then, Sabbath morning greeted everyone with fresh brewed coffee and a delicious brunch of all the good things one would expect. Mr. Bardo gave the sermon on “Leadership.” He followed up the sermon with three additional workshops on Service, Education and Leadership, on Saturday evening and Sunday morning… but not before we had a wonderful “steak and fish fry” out on the deck of the Riviera Lodge, with Chef Api doing the honors. Saturday evening we all sat around the tables and learned again the leadership skills so necessary in our lives, in the Church and in the workplace… not to mention in our own families and with our friends.
Some said it was perhaps the best Saratoga Family weekend that they had attended. Family, friends, young and old alike, had a wonderful time in Saratoga. Mark your calendars for next year at this same time—late June or early July—for another Rocky Mountain Saratoga Family weekend.—Ben Whitfield

Living Youth Camp
Essay Contest Finals
We have the final results of our first Annual Living Youth Essay contest! Thirty teens participated in our Essay Contest this year, answering the question, “Why do you believe God exists?” The results are: First Place, Olivia Tyler (Australia); Second Place, Courtney Flowers; and Third Place, Ashley Forrestier. Congratulations to them for winning scholarships to the Living Youth Camp for their efforts! Thanks to all the participants for the work put into this Essay Contest. Our judging process involved a team of ministers and Church staff, who selected the top six essays. These essays were then read by Dr. Winnail, Dr. Germano, Mr. Crockett, and Mr. Richard Ames for the final place selection. The judges found it very difficult to select from many excellent essays, mentioning many times how pleased they were that our young people were able to defend their faith in God so well. Good job to all!—Jonathan McNair
Missouri Pre-Teen Camp
For one full week, June 20-27, more than 100 campers and staff enjoyed an abundance of fun activities, good food, and godly instruction at the Missouri LYC Pre-Teen Camp, just north of St. Louis! Our theme this year was “Choose to be Different!” and all of our activities and classes were geared toward helping communicate that idea. Mr. Jonathan McNair, Director of the Church’s youth programs, was with us for the first half of camp, which was a real treat for everyone, and Regional Pastor Rand Millich visited as well, to give a split sermon at Sabbath Services.
2010 will certainly be noted as a special year in Missouri, with many new challenges! We were told on Day One that the lake we use for canoeing was closed for water quality testing. Then, it became quickly apparent there was a case of strep throat and the stomach flu just waiting to spread through the camp. But, resourcefulness and God’s Ways saved the day! Concerning the lake, our instructors, Mr. and Mrs. Arseneault, quickly crafted a remarkable Challenge Class to replace canoeing, and applying God’s Laws of quarantine and care quickly prevented the sickness from spreading.
As a result, our 48 eight-to-twelve-year-old campers had a remarkable time, and many were very sad to leave. As one family wrote us, speaking of the four campers they were taking home, “they were still on their little cloud nine on the way back, singing camp songs, laughing, sharing memories and looking forward to next year!” Many thanks to our Great God and to His people for their efforts and prayers given in service to the families of God’s Church!—Wallace Smith

Handwriting on the Wall! On July 4, the United States, currently the most powerful nation in the world, celebrated 234 years of independence. The following day, on Monday, July 5, British-born Harvard professor and economic historian Niall Ferguson opened the 2010 Aspen Ideas Festival with a stark warning that the American “empire” could suddenly collapse—possibly within the next two years—due to the country’s rising debt! Citing historical examples, Ferguson pointed out that economic debt can lead to a loss of military power and global respect—which he saw firsthand on a recent trip to China—where China’s leaders were not interested in being lectured by Americans about economics or democracy. He noted that the recent financial crisis “has accelerated a fundamental shift in the balance of power with the U.S. shedding power and China absorbing it.” A number of factors are coming together—tax cuts, two wars, the financial recession, the resulting federal stimulus and bailout programs, and the growth of entitlement programs—that spell trouble for America in the days ahead. This is what Bible prophecies have long foretold. When nations forget God and turn away from His laws there will be serious consequences unless they repent (see Leviticus 26, Deuteronomy 28). The Scriptures, the Church of God and prominent historians have been warning for decades about the direction that America and other Israelite nations have been going—yet, those warnings have gone unheeded. Hopefully, we can learn from this and make the changes in our lives we need to make—before it is too late!

News and Prophecy—July 8, 2010
Brussels to Control British Purse Strings? Senior European leaders predict that the British Prime Minister will not keep his promise to prevent Brussels from controlling his nation’s finances. “Belgian negotiators are convinced that Mr. Cameron’s hard line opposition to giving up more sovereignty to the EU, a pledge written into his coalition government’s agreement, will be sacrificed in the interests of pragmatism.” A senior Belgian diplomat conceded, “There is a question of sovereignty if the role of the European Commission in economic government is reinforced… EU officials have warned British diplomats that the Lisbon Treaty means it will have to compromise on sovereignty because Britain does not have veto for either the budget scrutiny or financial market supervision measures.” To prevent intervention from Brussels, Britain has contemplated instituting a new special tax to meet European-wide taxation needs, instead of allowing the EU to spend from national treasuries. However Belgium, holder of the current EU rotating presidency, is against such a move (Telegraph, June 29, 2010). As Britain and other EU nations face a forced centralization of their economic affairs, it is sobering to recall God’s warning to ancient Israel, which is still applicable to the Israelite-descended nations today. God warned that because of Israel’s rejection of Him, a far-away nation with an unfamiliar language, would bring down Israel’s high fortifications in which they trust (Deuteronomy 28:49-52). What high fortifications are higher than those of the banking and financial sectors? For England, where London has been a global financial center, few actions could be more humbling than for a non-English-speaking nation to control its economy and the pound sterling. We are living in sobering times.
Calling Evil Good. According to the British paper Daily Mail, “Prime Minister David Cameron will give his backing to an openly gay cleric who wants to become a bishop in a move that could threaten to split the Church of England. Dr Jeffrey John, the Dean of St Albans, is on the shortlist to be the next Bishop of Southwark. But his candidacy could spark a civil war between the liberal and conservative wings of the Church of England.” African archbishops who are more conservative predict that this move by Cameron could tear apart the Anglican Church. Once Mr. Cameron supports Dr. John, the Queen will then be required to approve him (Mail Online, July 4, 2010). Long ago, God prophesied against Israel, “You have wearied the LORD with your words… In that you say, ‘Everyone who does evil is good in the sight of the LORD, and He delights in them’” (Malachi 2:17). Mr. Cameron is just one of many leaders of Israelite-descended nations who have joined the ground-swell of opinion in support of making national leaders out of what God clearly calls sinners. It is sad to realize that our actions as nations truly “weary” the great God of Heaven. God speed the day when the righteous will rule and our national actions will once again bring joy to our Father in Heaven.
Christ Probably Did not Die on a Cross. In a recent dissertation study at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, pastor Gunnar Samuelsson spent 400 pages describing the “Crucifixion in Antiquity.” His findings bear out what God’s Church has known and taught for decades—that Jesus Christ likely did not die on a “t-shaped” cross. As a devout evangelical preacher and believer in the “power of the Cross,” what Samuelsson discovered shocked him! In his in-depth research, he could find no clear references to the t-shaped cross. Samuelsson noted in an ABC News interview that “…for generations people have misinterpreted and mistranslated the Greek word ‘stauros’ [translated cross in most Bibles] to mean crucifix, when really the term just means a suspension device, which might have been anything such as a ‘pole or tree trunk’” (www.whas11.com, July 2, 2010). Although the information presented by Samuelsson has been known by scholars and God’s Church for decades, it is interesting to see it highlighted in the media. Satan, in his craftiness, has deceived people into believing and even worshiping the crucifix—rubbing likenesses of it, kneeling before it and even making it into religious jewelry. Sadly, not only do many people bow before an image, which God forbids (Deuteronomy 5:8), the crucifix is probably not even an accurate portrayal of the instrument of Christ’s death.—Scott Winnail, James and Sue Bennett
The World Ahead Weekly Update 7/2
Greetings from Charlotte –
The two Tomorrow’s World Special Presentations held in Winnipeg, Manitoba last week drew an attendance of 59 subscribers—and four of them attended services the following Sabbath! This week at Headquarters, Dr. Roderick Meredith recorded his Last Great Day 2010 message to be sent to our 45 Feast sites around the world. This week also, we mailed brochures for TWSPs in Thomasville, Georgia, and Lake City, Florida, scheduled for the end of July. Fifty-five presentations have been held so far this year, with more than 2,160 unique subscribers in attendance! (Your prayers for Dr. Meredith’s successful presentation in Dallas, Texas, on July 10 and Mr. Ames’ in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, on July 11 are much appreciated). Meanwhile, Dr. Douglas Winnail and Mr. Charles Ogwyn have been in Europe to lead an Internet Conference. Dr. Winnail wrote yesterday from England, “The trip to Belgium for the Internet Conference went very well. Mr. Ogwyn and I were able to spend the Sabbath with brethren in the Charleroi congregation and visitors who had come for the weekend. I was also able to conduct a session from the Advanced Leadership Training Program. On Sunday, we had very profitable discussions with the directors of the foreign language websites and also a Board Meeting with the members of the Belgium corporation. On Monday, we were able to tour the battlefield at Waterloo and make a short visit to Aachen, Germany—the site of Charlemagne’s palace—before flying to London to visit Mr. Rod King and the office here in the UK.” Dr. Winnail and Mr. Ogwyn have safely arrived in Charlotte this afternoon. Thank you for your prayers for their travels.
Church Administration
Hurricane Alex
Mr. Phil Sena reports: I have heard from all of our brethren in the Rio Grande Valley in south Texas that they are well, and have suffered no power outages nor property damage as a result of Hurricane Alex. One member reports that his phone service was knocked out, but that’s all. Thanks to everyone who prayed for their safety.
Barbados Update
Mr. and Mrs. Fitzroy Greeman visited our brethren in Barbados from May 28 to June 1. As they were clearing Customs and Immigration at the Barbados airport on May 28, Mr. Greeman reports that, “the Officer who did the final examination noticed that I declared on thefForm that I was a Religious Minister. He asked which religion. Upon hearing that we were from the Living Church of God, he engaged us in a lengthy conversation. He had been reading literature from the time of Mr. Herbert Armstrong and is now receiving the Tomorrow’s World Magazine. He is convinced that this is the true Church, and he is considering making a commitment.”
German Update
Mr. Adrian Kaefer reports that from January through June 2010, our German website, www.weltvonmorgen.org, had 30,950 identified visitors (1.6% more than the last six months of 2009). A total of 2,444 booklets, 15,763 articles and 1,802 Bible Study Course lessons were downloaded. In addition, 204 booklets, 388 articles and 72 Bible Study Course lessons were sent by mail. Mr. Kaefer writes, “We missed about 4,500 [website] visitors in June 2010, who could not be counted due to a problem with the statistics program. Still, the overall year-to-date increase of literature distribution is 26.1% (it would have been about +35%)” than the previous six months.
Little Rock Spokesman Club Ladies Luncheon
Mr. Wyatt Ciesielka reports: On June 27, the Little Rock Spokesmen Club concluded its 2009-2010 Club year by hosting a “Ladies Luncheon.” Fifty Club members and special guests enjoyed a mentally invigorating topics session and a truly superb speaking session. The theme was “An Italian Countryside Picnic” and the men decorated the hall accordingly, with Italian tablecloths and many beautiful potted flowers. Lunch was provided by a local Italian restaurant and the men provided outstanding desserts and sparkling juice. The ladies were presented with corsages and were given the potted flowers to take home as a show of appreciation. True Christian fellowship and fun was enjoyed by all and we look forward to next year’s Club.

More often than not, after someone’s death, we remember the good that person has done. Words of appreciation and praise are expressed in eulogies that follow, but why don’t we express them when the person is still alive? Should good words be said only after one’s death? Why not while the person is still alive and able to hear? Why don’t we show more attention and more love to those around us while they are still alive? I know of a case of a woman not in the Church who, when her husband died, was almost devastated. She only remembered how “good” he had been, how much she cared for him and how much she now misses him. Sometimes, when a loved one dies, we mainly have regrets and mostly remember the “good” the defunct had been. Regrets hurt and pull us down. We seem unable to forgive our faults. It seems to be too late. Actually, is it really too late? Is the damage irreparable? Christ answered that question. Read Matthew 25:31-46. He told His disciples that the ultimate reward is when we do good to others—to feed the hungry, to satisfy the thirsty, to clothe the naked, to provide shelter for the strangers, to visit the sick and those in prison. “Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren,” Christ said, “you did it to Me.” In other words, even though one may not have the opportunity to go back in time and repair the damage done, we can always do good to someone who is in need and still alive. We can do the good to others—even to strangers—that we failed to do to someone who was close to us—dear to us. In other words, if you have failed to do good or to speak well of someone you love, it’s never too late. Turn to those who need your help and your love. Remember Christ’s words, “inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.”
Have a peaceful Sabbath,

News and Prophecy—July 1, 2010
Europe Protecting Morals. “The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France has ruled that European countries currently prohibiting same-sex marriage are not violating the human rights of their citizens. In a 4-3 ruling, the court ruled against a lawsuit filed by two Austrian men who were denied permission to marry in 2002 by Austrian officials.” Although the court ruling does allow individual nations to support same-sex partnerships, it also clearly states that such support does not require such partnerships to be granted all the same rights and privileges of traditional marriages (Catholic News Agency, June 29, 2010). Although elements throughout Europe appear to be “casting off restraint” and moving away from Judeo-Christian values, the Vatican and even some of the courts are moving to uphold and maintain some of these traditional values. As time moves forward and many Israelite-descended nations, including the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand move further away from their traditional value base, this could create tension with a Europe that is working to maintain some of these same values. Bible prophecy reveals that at the time of the end, many of the descended nations of Israel will be taken into captivity by a European beast power (Deuteronomy 28:64-68; Amos 4:2; Amos 5:2-3). Could disagreement over traditional values be one of the dividing points that help create more animosity between the beast and these nations?
Germany and Russia. While Europe boomed, Germany was satisfied and did not need partners outside of Europe. It had plenty of markets to sell its goods and a vast worker base to support German industry. However, with the financial ills present throughout Europe and the inability to sustain its economy within the confines of Europe, Germany may be looking for another partner that can help it continue to grow and also support its demand for more workers. Germany is now reaching out to Russia while stating that it wants to integrate Russia into Europe. “It should be remembered that the Germans are proposing a Russian security relationship with Europe, not a Russian security relationship with Germany alone. At the same time, it should be remembered that it is the Germans taking the initiative to open the talks by unilaterally negotiating with the Russians and taking their agreements to other European countries.” As one expert on geopolitics describes Germany’s current challenge, “The Germans do not want to lose the European concept. At the same time, they are trying to redefine it more to their advantage. From the German point of view, bringing Russia into the relationship would help achieve this. But the Germans still have to explain what their relationship is with the rest of Europe, particularly their financial obligation to troubled economies in the eurozone” (Stratfor, June 22, 2010). Students of prophecy understand that Germany will play a leading role in the coming European Beast power (Isaiah 10:5-11). Germany’s current actions with Russia appear to support the possibility of such a future role. Eventually though, Germany will become a blessing to the nations of the earth (Isaiah 19:23-25).
U.S. Abortions on the Decline. According to the Allan Guttmacher Institute, the number of abortions performed annually in the U.S. has been declining since about 1991. At that time, there were nearly 1.6 million abortions annually! As of 2005, the number of US abortions fell to 1.2 million lives of unborn children terminated annually (Guttmacher.org, January 2008). This decline was still at a rate higher than many Northern and Western European nations. Additionally, in 2003, Cuba and Russia reported higher rates of abortion than actual live births (International Family Planning Perspectives, September 2007). Between 1973-2005, nearly 50 million abortions were successfully performed in the US alone (NRLC.org, October 20, 2004). These figures are one tell-tale sign of worldwide societal decline. The Apostle Paul observed “For we know that the whole creationgroans and labors with birth pangs together until now” (Romans 8:22). Thankfully soon, all of creation including children and the unborn, will be delivered from the captivity of the deceitful god of this age (Romans 8:21; 2 Corinthians 4:4; Revelation 12:9). Abortions will one day soon cease. God speed that day!—Scott Winnail
